Pros
1
Excellent trial attorney who achieves impressive results for clients
“Samuel didn't just deliver the results we desired, he completely exceeded them, obtaining a unanimous jury verdict in our favor as well as an unexpected award for punitive damages!”
2
Dedicated and caring lawyer who alleviates client stress
“More importantly, Sam's dedication to us, combined with his creative legal strategies, alleviated the mounting stress we had been feeling prior to working with him, allowing us to refocus on our family with confidence that Sam was taking care of everything.”
Cons
1
Unreliable and inconsistent in following through on commitments
“Four months passed without receiving the engagement letter or any communication from Sam. I did not reach out to Sam during this time because as a client or potential client of an attorney, I have a minimum expectation that a lawyer does what he says he is going to do, when he says he is going to do it.”
2
Charges high fees without providing promised services
“Sam is looking to charge high-end legal rates (he advertises $500 for a 50 minute consult, which even at a full hour far exceeds the hourly rate of many real estate attorneys with significantly more experience) and was wanting to charge a contingency fee 10-15% above market rates. All the while, Sam failed to provide bare minimum consideration, forthrightness, honesty, and respect.”
3
Unethical practices, including failing to refund fees and misrepresenting services
“My family really needed an attorney ASAP, MR Doncaster said he needed 500$ just to speak with him , my wife and I are out of work but we came up with 500$ during cancelation our phone was dropping calls so we only spoke with Doncaster for 15min he told us 5,000 up front we tried for 2 months couldn't get it so we asked for our 500 back because he did nothing, he won't give it back he won't even take our calls..he pretends to care BUT HE DONT thanks for stilling money from our sick infant.. how do u sleep?”

It hurts when you've been screwed in a home transaction, worse is when the person hired and paid to help you in this situation puts in about 10% effort, I think! As far as I can tell, he took my $7500, sent one or two documents to the court and then went dark. I'm such a fool. I should have known that no attorney of real merit would have the second question he asked be, "How much money do you have in the bank?" Run, run as fast as you can.

https://alabnews.com/supreme-court-of-arizona-reprimands-phoenix-attorney-for-billing-irregularities/ This states only some parts of his misconduct but will be enough to know about him. My advice to you is "just avoid him and you will save money and stress."

We hired Doncaster for a wrongful eviction and to try and prove fraud against against the company who forget documents to obtain a family home. And for harassment to me. He charged me $7500.00 just for a retainer. After the eviction he never answer our calls and never did anything about the fraud case. His secretary is the only one that would finally email. We obtained his services around Sept 5. And by April 20 th he had not filed one thing for the fraud. Needless to say we let him go. He did give me bad close to $2,800 but we never got any results for the house, which as been sold 2 more times. We gave him all of the information we had, he never looked anything up for himself or even bothered to read most of it by April 20. How much is an eviction? $4500? Mr Doncaster! All you did was blame us for your incompetence.

I would select NO STARS as a rating if I could . In my personal opinion, Mr. Doncaster might be the worst lawyer I have ever had the misfortune of working with. Check his background with the Arizona Bar Association website. He was officially reprimanded in August 2023 for 7 complaints and is on probation for 2 years. He was ordered to pay over $15,000 in restitution. Many great attorney's out there. Keep looking and do not use this man. I am posting anonymously for fear of repercussions from Mr. Doncaster.

The feedback put on March 15, 2021, must be true. People should know why the 500 USD for "the first consultation" will be applied for a future retainer. The reason is that the "consultation" by Doncaster is mostly not about legal issues but mostly of inquiry about your financial standing (i.e., how much money you have) and how desperate you are, which Doncaster wants to know about more than legal issues of your case. Concisely speaking, his "consultation" cannot be charged as legal service in the first place. Normal lawyers give you a number about how much it may cost to go for a lawsuit, as a warning, and then ask if you are willing to pay, but Doncaster asks how much YOU HAVE without giving how much a lawsuit may cost. If you give info about your financial ability, Doncaster will add extra "work hours" to rip off your money, according to your financial ability.

My husband and I did our wills with Bethany and we were very pleased with the service. Bethany took the time to walk us through each document and was very patient and answered any questions that we had in a way that was very easy for us to understand. She was flexible, responsive, and kept on top of us to ensure we were completing the documents timely. She is also very affordable. I would definitely work with Bethany again.

mrs. Jacobs was my attorney for several corporation formations, small legal issues, and estate planning. From my will and trust, to a simple demand letter, to representing my small business corporation she was there when I had questions, fought for me when I needed it, and provided the legal guidance using everyday language without sounding too legalese. Her rates are reasonable (her estate planning isn't much more than the do it yourself stuff available) and she always made me feel like an important client. Highly recommended.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Phoenix, Arizona?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
