My car was rear-ended while I was waiting for people to cross in front of me at a crosswalk. Fortunately, the gentleman admitted fault and had insurance. At first I wasn't sure what to do because if I knew that if I called my insurance company to report the claim (even though the accident was not my fault), my insurance rates would go up. Oppositely, if I dealt directly with the gentleman's insurance company, I know agents are trained to slip you up so they can mitigate damages they potentially owe.
Two days later, the decision was made for me. I woke up and my back was on fire. Could barely make it out of bed. I knew I needed to have my back looked at for the good of my long-term health and my girlfriend gave me the number to her chiro. I made the appointment.
Meantime, I went ahead and called the driver's insurance company. They fully acknowledged their driver being at fault and asked me if I was injured. I told them about my back and said I had scheduled a visit to a chiropractor. The conversation seemed fine up to the end when the agent asked me if he could meet me in person at a Starbucks near where I lived. I'm not sure why, but a red flag instantly went up in my mind. "This is strange..." I thought, but I went ahead and set a time to meet him (I didn't know any better). Fortunately, it was *after* my first visit to the chiro.
At the chiro, after my exam, I off-handedly told the doctor about the agent wanting to meet me in a couple days. He immediately said, "What?? No, something's weird here," and he pressed me for more details. Knowing insurance very well, he told me how agents are professionally trained to try to snare you using *your own words* by asking questions regarding your health. Even the simple question, "How are you feeling?" with the standard answer, "Fine," is all they need to significantly lessen what they will pay out. The doctor advised me against this meeting and to my great benefit, gave me the name of the Normandie Law Firm.
*I had never dealt with a lawyer before* so I was somewhat reticent to take the chiro's advice, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. After speaking with the lawyer, he too, said that the meeting was extremely unprofessional and that it was essentially a trap. He took my case and advised me not to speak with this agent anymore; that he and his office would now become my mouthpiece, so to speak.
The next day I received a call from the insurance agent, and with a dejected voice on the message, he mentioned that he would not be keeping the Starbuck's appointment & that he was now off the case due to my securing counsel.
From that point on, I was in the excellent hands of this firm. In a nutshell, my lawyer secured for me chiropractic treatment, therapy and referred an excellent body shop that did all the work on my car without a single dime from me. My lawyer even said that he would do his best to secure some money for me from the loss I took.
Honestly, all I really expected was to get checked out medically, get my back into at least the condition it was in before the accident, have the medical bills paid for, get my car fixed and if there was anything left over, that would be a nice little blessing.
Though the process took some time, my lawyer was very good about checking in with me and I always felt good after our phone conversations. About 6 weeks ago, he rang to give me an update that I was probably going to receive a check for a few thousand dollars. "Wow! Great!" As I said, I wasn't really expecting a monetary gain out of all this. Finally, another call came last week that I could come down to the office to pick up the check. I was stunned! The law firm secured an amount for me in the *high four figures*!! Double the amount I was earlier quoted!
I cannot thank this law firm enough for what they did for me. They far exceeded my expectations, were very kind and reassuring, had excellent, professional recommendations and really came through for me in a big way.
