I was originally trained as a mediator in 1992. I taught conflict management at the university level between 1995 and 2013. In the last 25 years I have participated in a supportive role in dozens of mediations. It is with that expertise in the field of conflict resolution and mediation that I give Karen Sloat 5 stars. So many attorney mediators just do what they were trained to do in law school-- analyze the case and argue the merits. That often results in the same adversarial contest and entrenchment that gave rise to the lawsuit to begin with. Skilled mediators, like Ms. Sloat, do more than that. They identify parties needs and work to achieve outcomes that meet those needs. They approach resolution of conflict as a collaboration, rather than a zero-sum game and encourage parties to view negotiations from that perspective. These are the ways in which Karen Sloat showed us she is not just a lawyer relying on what she learned in law school, but a mediator capable of applying mediation the theory and technique to the cases in front of her. It is beyond the scope of this short review to comment on Ms. Sloat’s communication and facilitation skills, capacity for neutrality, etc. Suffice to say that if she didn’t have those in abundance too, she would not be the very capable, dedicated mediator I observed during a recent mediation.

I recently used the services of this law office, specifically attorney Craig Sterling. I was referred to this office by a well-respected attorney in this area who specializes in a different type of law. She spoke highly of the Law Office of Karen J. Sloat. The issue that Craig represented me for was that the California Unemployment Development Department (EDD) had denied my claim AFTER it had already been completely paid, because my employer said that I quit my job. The reason for my separation from this job was a hostile work environment. Given the description of the work environment that I provided to the EDD, Craig said that the EDD should never have denied my claim, and he was correct, because during the appeal hearing, the judge did indeed drop the claim. It was a very stressful experience, but Craig worked with me to patiently answer all my questions. He also clearly explained to me what to expect at the hearing and guided me through it. In addition, the office was very professional about handling my account and inquiries. I highly recommend this law office and specifically attorney Craig Sterling if you have any unemployment issues.

The law office of Karen J Sloat APC is an incredible firm that truly embodies the pursuit of justice and equality. They are of the utmost professional caliber and her counsel of attorneys Chris and Craig that we worked with were wonderful. I was privileged to have them represent us with dignity and respect, while being personable and available for any and all questions. The secretaries and paralegals: Cassidy, Brittany and Thai were also an integral part of communication and the courteous climate of this firm. Everyone here is amazing.
