John Ray was excellent. After my husband passed away, there was a family dispute as to who was entitled to what. My case was quite time-consuming, but he followed through with everything -- even the appeals. John was there with me every step of the way. When I had questions, he was very patient and explained the answers in great detail to further my understanding. I am thrilled to say we won the case. I would highly recommend John Ray.

I hired Paul to take over my case from another, less competent attorney. Although my case was very involved and complex he came on and worked most diligently to bring the case to fruition. He was always very forthcoming, explained all of the legal issues in a way that I understood and was on top of all the details in the case. I would recommend Attorney Melocowsky highly, he possesses a legal acumen that is second to none, always communicates very well and is a tenacious advocate that you want in your corner when you need him. I am very pleased with the result in my case and would not hesitate to call him if I ever needed a legal opinion for any reason.

I have consulted with Ms. Norris on many matters, for myself and my family. I have always received prompt and thorough advice. I have felt thoroughly informed, and believed Ms. Norris to have spent adequate time with me to gather all the facts and research the necessary law. She makes certain I am aware of all options before proceeding, and that I understand the consequences of my choices. Ms. Norris practices criminal defense law, and has the invaluable experience of working as a prosecutor for 10 years. Four of those years were as the elected prosecutor. There is no way of overstating how much that benefits her criminal defense clients now. She also consulted in amending a loved one's trust documents. She has a good deal of experience in this area. She practices in Branch County and is from Branch County. She knows several generations of the same families. This makes people very comfortable with her in estate planning and settlement, and makes her already somewhat knowledgeable of family and property structures locally. Her office is comfortable and small-town. She instantly puts clients at ease and speaks to them at exactly their comfort level. She dedicates the time necessary to make put them at ease, and give them the very best representation possible. She is absolutely the best attorney for my money. Every time.

Adam is a one-stop shop for legal advice on software matters, and general corporate concerns. I have used his services for drafting service agreement contracts and other corporate issues. It's so much more efficient not needing to explain technical matters or scenarios to my attorney. Most importantly the feedback is instantaneous allowing our group to focus on business and technology.

I am very happy that I hired Jennifer Yoder. In order to negotiate the best outcome, she wasted no time gathering all the facts to my case. She fought for a better settlement than even I believed possible. Also, as divorces are a lengthy process, she kept me updated through it all. I definitely recommend this lawyer! She is outstanding!

Bonnie helped me with a misdemeanor offense in 2010. It was a petty first offense and I got off with community service and a small fine. Her fee was reasonable and although she is not normally a criminal defense lawyer she knew her stuff and saw me through to the end with a positive outcome. She followed up and helped me expunge the record. She is a meticulous, helpful attorney who genuinely cares.

I hired Stephanie to take over on a case that has been going non stop since 2005. It has been a high conflict divorce case with several different lawyers involved. She was able to come in and professionally handle the other side, who was acting pro-se, even when that person chose not to. She was timely on everything and responded promptly. Her knowledge and experience grew over the time that she handled the case. In the end, what was best for the minor child involved in this case, was what the judge ruled. I would highly recommend her for any divorce or custody case.

He is a State Attorney that just doesn't go through a case because that his job, but rather he really does care and does a great job. Sometimes there is some type of miscommunication, be sure to keep constant contact and take responsibility of YOUR Case. Dennis Walters represented me in one of the hardest (according to Dennis) divorce/custody) cases he has ever tried. My wife used every dirty trick in the book, from restraining order to accusations (2 months later) of sexual abuse of our little kids...once we were almost all the way through (11+ month) the judge used the term "NUCLEAR BOMB" in reference to, were the allegations mother had made true or mother's NUCLEAR BOMB" TO KEEP FATHER FROM SEEING HIS KIDS! MOTHER'S ACCUSATION was much stronger that a NUCLEAR BOMB, it was a HYDROGEN BOMB, obliterating absolutely everything! I have been treated worse that a convicted pedophile (no charges were ever filed and I cooperated fully on all fronts) my rights to my kids, house (4000 sq' 9 miles from Aspen, CO), property, tools (unable to make a living), guns (constitutional right), and my life and reputation have been taken away due only to Mother's accusation. She Amy Carter BSN Aspen Valley Hospital was arrested 2/13/2004 for domestic violence against me (she called 911)...she turned the tables and used/abused the system and Aspen Response for Women coached he how to lie TO GET THE DESIRED RESULTS. It is hurting the kids, she wants to be vindictive against me. She has only allowed me to see our 5 y.o. boy and our 3 y.o. girl for 49 hours in the past 11 months, AND I WAS THE STAY AT HOME DAD! Dennis and I have had a difficult up hill battle to the tune of $54,000 in 11 months....we are currently waiting for the judge Daniel Petre to decide final orders. Judge Petre is very busy, seems very good, honest, and thorough and has given him self until 1/21/2014 to decide this very difficult divorce. Amy Carter does not let my parents speak to the kids, but her mother "talks to them 2 or 3 times a week". That is a direct quote jOYCE, AMY'S MOTHER form testimony. Dennis WALTERS HAS DONE THE BEST HE CAN, AN EXCELLENT JOB, AND WE HOPE JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL! I AM waiting to see if we have a justice system, a legal system, or a LEGAL EXTORTION SYSTEM?

I have used Gerard Verzaal several times and for several different types of cases. He has ALWAYS been thorough, compassionate, knowledgeable, and even aggressive when needed to be. I have used her services for several years now and no matter what kind of situation comes up he is and will always be my go-to guy. He was compassionate and firm for a family law situation I had. He was outstanding representing me in criminal law issues, making sure that i was treated fairly and defending my rights! when I was served with an inheritance claim that I didn't understand he was there for me then, too, and treated that issue as it was just as important as my other situations. he is easy to be honest to which gives you the best advantage for your case. he's an intelligent down to earth person that is comforting and helps tremendously, especially if you are already in a stressful situation. In the court room he is incredible at what he does! Since the first time I hired him he has given me nothing less than his best, even if I didn't give him much to work with. Not only is he my only attorney but he has also become my family's as well if needed. I have recommended his so much I may as well have just shouted from the roof top. I will continue to recommend him to anyone that could use his services!! I hope he never retires!!!

I met with Dave a few years back for a family law matter. A year later I used him when I sold my house, and 6 months later I used him again to incorporate my new business. Dave was able to clearly explain the answers to all of my questions regardless the area of law. He returned my all of my phone calls, did a great job keeping me informed, and even gave me a few tips that helped me save money in my start up business! I had used a few other attorneys before I met Dave. ALL of them had a higher hourly rate and were less attentive. I couldn’t be happier with his services, and would recommend him to anyone looking for a hardworking, honest attorney!

Mr. Marlow was recommended to me through a friend who had a positive outcome and he spoke very highly of him as well. I hired him to help with 3 felony cases. He immediately proposed drug court to reduce them to misdemeanors and even better to start living a life in recovery. I followed l directions he and the court ( judge Owens) gave me and graduated in exactly 6 months. A blessing Also now I am taking his advise, now that I have satisfied all the court requirements, and he will be helping me with my “pardon” or whatever they are calling it today. I cannot express my deep gratitude for the help I received from Lauren Donaldson. She was an excellent lawyer for my case. She kept me informed every step of the way. Every single time I had a question, all I had to was shoot her an email and she would respond promply. It made my experience less painful to know that I could reach out to her any time of the day and she was there. My case was very emotional and it was my first divorce. Since I have never experienced the pain of divorce, I did not know what to expect. I mean I’ve read Danielle Steele novels before, but man nothing compares to this. I wholeheartedly recommend lauren donaldson. Everything she said would happen in my case, did. That's what counts. Knowing what is going to happen enabled me to better prepare for each step.

Layne isn't just a lawyer and Heather isn’t just his assistant. They are your legal advocates and partners in / out of the court room. I had a somewhat complicated child support and family court case. I worked with other lawyers in the past and easily paid three times as much for less than stellar results. I reached out to Layne and explained my legal situation. His assistant Heather was extremely helpful and accommodating to me having to cancel several times. During a free consultation Layne explained his very fair fee structure and his approach. Layne has experience working for both the plaintiff and defendant. So, he knows how each side thinks and how to navigate the court system and judges. Layne / heather were very responsive via email and phone. Layne would break down complex legal terminology and procedures into simple understandable terms. He prepares you for what expect in court and lays out the various scenarios and options.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
