Our building was flooded and our landlord wouldn’t let us out of our lease even though the entire floor had been removed and big pieces of wall were removed from our unit as well. We had nowhere to live and had to couch surf for two months, all while fighting with our landlord and insurance companies. We were completely in over our head and had extremely limited knowledge of tenant rights. April took us on and was instrumental in getting us the help that we needed. She was responsive, thoughtful, and fought on our behalf when it felt no one else would. We were able to get out of our lease and get all of our money back, none of which would be possible without the incomparable April Jones. Even with the chaos and mass evictions I’m sure she was assisting with during Covid, she found time to help us. There is a huge inequity with who can and cannot afford legal service in this country, and April has gone above and beyond to help close that gap and empower people with few resources. I reached out to Colorado Affordable Legal Services this afternoon as my relationship with my landlord over the past few months have grown increasingly tense and aggressive. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone was extremely knowledgeable and compassionate. Every question I had was answered over the 20 minute call and the consultation came at no cost. I was happily educated and left the phone call feeling confident in my rights as a renter. If you are having any issues with your landlord and are unsure of the rights you have I would highly recommend you take time out of your day to reach out to this legal office.
