I think it is vitally important to know who I am, what I have been through on my own financial journey which led me to today… I was raised in a family where money was hard earned and our credit score was all we had to our name. I have been working since I was 14 years old and bought my own car, paid for my own gas, insurance and cell phone (when I was 18). I never missed a payment in my life! I’m grateful that everything I had and have in my life has been earned by me and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Growing up this way taught me about working hard for everything you have and appreciating everything as well. During my college years, I worked three jobs all while attending school full time and receiving honors. It was during these years, I also lived on credit cards and used them to eat, pay for bills, books, gas for my car and everything in between. It was a long hard road and no one helped, but I made it! In January, 2014 I was married. In November, 2014 I bought my own home. Inexpensive, small and a fixer upper, but it was mine. My husband lost his job two months after I purchased the home which put me into an even more downward spiral. He finally got another job and then lost it again in the middle of 2018. That’s when I made the decision to file for divorce and figure out my next move. Over the years, I found it more and more difficult each month to make ends meet and maintain an exceptional track record on my payments. I was taking loans to pay off other loans just to stay afloat. My anxiety began to get out of control with figuring out how I was going to get myself out of this mess. I was a failure in my eyes. I had to sit down and really think out a plan to get myself back on track. I started researching my options. I tried negotiating my debts. I didn’t travel or live an extravagant lifestyle, but still, most of my pay checks were eaten up by debt. I needed a Fresh Start! Bankruptcy. At first it was quite a scary thought. A million things ran through my head, why is this happening to me, why can’t I pay my bills, am I doing something wrong. I was scared, confused and in a hole I couldn’t get out of, so I went to see Attorney Pletter for a free consultation…just to talk, get some questions answered, and learn more. When I left his office I had one thing I was lacking before I got there, and that was HOPE. After months of thinking, contemplating and some tears (I won’t lie), I decided it was the best option for me. Ultimately, I went back to him and went through the bankruptcy process. I have taken the time to review my lifestyle and my future and what changes I needed to make. I have come up with a strategy to budget my money and I now feel bankruptcy is not the end for me; it is merely an obstacle that I am capable of overcoming, ending up stronger than I was at the beginning. I’m beyond grateful to be given a second chance to make my future brighter. Thank you for this opportunity.
