This attorney represented me for over three years with a negative outcome. He charged a ridiculously high hourly rate in my contract (my mistake for trusting him and not noticing). He requested to be contacted only by e-mail, yet he rarely replied. I could never get him by phone nor was he available when I stopped by his office. He never provided a billing statement showing how he spent my retainer. All and All I would not recommend him.

Why is it that every mom gets supervised visitation and/or their kids are sent to reunification therapy? She hates mothers who are maternal, and has the same theory of PA in every single other one I’ve seen. No nuance, nasty mean decisions that consistently favor abusers.

My divorce was as bad. My ex would not stop harassing, stalking, tracking devises, emailing, calling etc...I became so stressed from his non stop harassment. I was a good mother, no abuse, no verbal physical abuse, yet Louise Truax recommended supervised visitation. Even though there was no bad report, there was no end in site, this went on for 3 years costing thousands and ultimately contributed to parent alienation, supporting my ex narrative to all including our child that I was a crazy. I had a team of therapist's who testified I was good enough, But nothing changed, nothing my attorney could do worked. I lost my child, home, and finances. I have not heard from my child in over 13 years. No card, no letter, nothing. No reunification, that I was told would eventually happen. I ended up sleeping on the floor at my work for 6 years to make ends meet. While my ex is a multi millionaire. I will always be heartbroken until I die. I can't imagine doing this to someone who was not abusive. I'm told supervised visitation is not uncommon with Louise Truax. I think she is heartless.

She was hired to represent my children instead she did everything to benefit herself and the other two lawyers who represented me and my ex. She dragged my case for 2 and a half years, and because it was my ex who was paying her fees she also did everything he asked to benefit him and not my children, their well being or their safety. A couple of times she announced to everyone in court that she put a down payment for a house in Fairfield after we paid her $30k. Everyone was congratulating her on the purchase of her new home at my children’s expenses. She also co-teaches with some of the female judges so she always got everything she wanted but nothing to benefit my children. She used to run a home for sexual offenders and pedofilles but was forced to shut down so this is the kind of individual this woman is. She is also a very unhealthy person and I hope she is rotting and living in hell while she’s still alive if she is even still alive. I HOPE NO ONE ELSE EVER HIRES HER!

A friend of mine used Sandra Lax and to my understanding she has been completely unprofessional in her verbal communications, representation, and billing. I was so upset about the way my friend has been treated that i decided to write a review. How does her unethical behavior provide any reassurance to those that use lawyers to defend them? I was delighted to hear that new reforms have been made where the GALs will be under stricter review and subject to removal for such actions.

My own experience goes like this: Budless says: I will require a retainer of $10,000. You : pay $10,000 and nothing happens for months Budless: well he will finally get around to filing worthless motions that just eat up your retainer. Budless says: Give me $15,000 and I guarantee I will get your legal fees back. Budless says: we need another $10,000 for doing nothing. Budless says: This is an outrage , unjust we are taking this to trial! Budless says: another $5,000 for doing less than nothing. You say: I'm out of money! Budless says: don't worry about the money. A year or so later. Budless says: I will leave this court room right now in the middle of this trial if you don't pay me more money. Oh, don't forget to expect a written closing argument to your divorce trial that will cost about $10,000.00 . Why, because verbal closing arguments cost almost nothing. Budless: screaming at his entire staff like they are garbage. Budless: files a law suite to collect his "legal" fees. You: file your own legal malpractice lawsuit. I can't express to you the level of incompetents I experiences with Michael Budless in the drivers seat. I wish someone would have written the truth about Budless before I hired him. He will take a bad situation and make it 1000 x worse. It takes years to recover from the damage caused by a bad attorney. I am taking the time out of my life to write this most honest review. Not to harm Budless because well he is what he is. But, to warn unsuspecting innocent people of this type of predation.

Upon recommendation of a friend, I retained Mr. Budlong. I thought I was in good hands when he showed me all his pictures of him with famous people. That was the first sign that his ego was more important than my case. Mr. Budlong does not take the time to educate his clients. He pushed me to make snap decisions that I have regretted for years. As I was being steam rolled by the other attorney's, Mr Budlong kept asking me "do you want to get divorced or not".

Wish we never used her services or trusted her guidance and recommendations! A parent’s worst nightmare. She left our child in danger and did not take action unless absolutely forced to. Interesting that she touts being a member of the grievance community, being that parents have to submit her wrong doings to the grievance committee. Wish we second guessed the attorney that recommended her. She was deceptive, misleading, lazy, dishonest, unreliable, had horrible communication skills if any and lied often. The judge had to redirect her on her lack of ethics and safety concerns. A parent’s worst nightmare.

I don't know the experience others have had with John Cantarella but he was a disgraceful attorney while handling my case. I have found out so much information about my own case, and the nature of my injuries on my own, with the assistance of another attorney. If it had not been for my injury affecting my knee, and having me out of work to focus my attention on my case, no telling how screwed up my case would be. He did absolutely nothing for my case, was not abreast on the specifics to my case, rarely was patient enough to explain to me how things work in Workers Comp Law- and he withheld pertinent information from me. It seems clear that many Connecticut Attorneys are networking together to support major corporations. I specified to Mr. Cantarella that I was extremely hesitant about trusting an attorney here in Connecticut, because I was against my former employer which is a major corporation. Please understand that not All lawyers have their clients best interest at heart- and some are simply down right crooked. Maybe others will have better luck with him but from my experience, he was worthless.

I thought I found a diamond in the rough with Robert who is an attorney, accountant, and marriage and family therapist all in one with a relatively low hourly rate to boot, but he failed in each of those roles during our mediation.  As an attorney, he inaccurately claimed the court would not expect my wife to work, that litigation would cost more than mediation, and that I should agree to forfeit custody of my son to live with his maternal aunt in another state near my wife who abandoned us, while mediation was still proceeding and before we even agreed on any other terms.  This was also an example of the bias he had and failure as a therapist, advocating for one party and advising me to do something that no one would advise their own client to do.  This was consistent with his pattern of almost exclusively pressuring me to make unilateral concessions like giving up custody and not challenging my wife, ending every session with a backhanded but false warning that litigation would cost more than mediation.  As an accountant he failed by changing our bill so many times it was difficult to know what was accurate.  One practice in particular he used was to collect the standard session fee and much later claim more money was owed since the session took longer than the allotted time even though I paid him at the end of each session or even a day later once.  Even though his hourly rate was relatively low, I felt like I was being nickled and dimed, especially with all the billing/accounting errors he made.  In the end, his biased advocacy for my wife emboldened her to unsuccessfully litigate for custody of our son in the middle of mediation, destroying the mediation process and completely wasting the $10,000 I paid for it.  I found a good attorney in the local court system who advised me as I represented myself which only cost me $3,000 total and ended with my son staying in my custody and me paying 2.5 years of alimony rather than the 7-10 Robert advocated.  Litigation is not always cheaper than mediation nor vice versa, but Robert was clearly a failure.

Ross has a bad temper and is verbally inappropriate. On the day my divorce was finalized, he gritted his teeth at me and said, "If you don't sign this today, I'm going to lose it." So what I got was a lousy divorce contract. He left out incorporating a very important "floor" of a minimum income my ex had to pay me per month. Later when I saw him back at the courthouse, I was with another attorney. He walked up to me and asked me why I was back. I told him because my ex was yet again unemployed and you didn't put in a floor. He looked at me and said, "Oh but wasn't that assumed?" Then he walked away. Great job Ross.

I used this attorney in a case regarding my rights to my children. He rarely showed up for court and if he did attend he was ALWAYS late and would come in halfway through proceedings. I never received returned phone calls from him and my questions went unanswered by him. I have now lost my parental rights due partly to his inability to inform me of my rights and what I could do under the law. I called him with every question and concern and never once would he return my calls. I spoke with their father's attorney and got more answers and help from him than I ever did from Mike. He would convince me to just do whatever the State was asking and things would work out fine. He would often sit in the courtroom and whisper in my ear the whole time so that I could not hear what was going on in the proceedings, an apparent attempt to answer the numerous messages I had left for him on his voice mail. I was failed by the system and this attorney played a LARGE role in that failure!

My wife hired attorney Rebimbas for a post nuptial agreement. The only time I ever spoke to her on the phone was the first day I called the office asking to arrange for an attorney. She picked up the phone that day right away, and agreed a deal for an extremely reasonable fee. However, you get what you pay for. My attorney has made countless attempts to contact attorney Rebimbas and she has not made herself available at ALL. It's laughable. The terms of the postnuptial were agreed in February, and it is now nearly SEPTEMBER. Here is how it goes- it takes about 9 weeks for the attorney to respond to your inquiries. In our case, we would arrange to meet on a Saturday for a signing. On Friday afternoon at 4:45 pm she would email us, asking for a copy of the postnuptial, one that my attorney sent her weeks ago. Then, she would read through it and find problems the morning of our appointment, cancelling our signing. Then, she would email all the corrections to my attorney to make, he'd make them, but guess what! Another 9 weeks waiting. 9 weeks of calling the office every other day and the secretary just repeats the same. "I'll be sure to leave the message for the attorney." To be fair, it is clear she is extremely busy working at the state courthouse. But that is no excuse to ignore her paying clients. She never should have accepted our case if she is overloaded. It has been a nightmare and we have been fighting over this trivial issue that could have been wrapped up with another attorney so easily. Now we will have to pay another attorney to finish our case if she doesn't answer in a few weeks. Just an absolute nightmare. She's clearly a competent attorney, but never available, so what's the use.

I had an unusually strong case which could have easily been settled out of court; the defense admitted full liability for the damages I suffered! I wasn't given proper advice before or during the trial and Mr. Skolnick allowed the defense to humiliate me before the jury by questioning me about irrelevant issues that had nothing to with my case. He did not present the evidence in a convincing manner and to make matters worse, he held back evidence that I had specifically requested be presented at the trial. I had many lawyers who were very interested in my case. Unfortunately I didn't change lawyers when I had the opportunity. Overall this negative experience turned out to be the price of an education!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
