I do realize that Mr Nanavity is a public defender and therefore most likely is over-worked with cases in the juvenile system. However, that does not allow for him to basically just be a stick figure in the court room when he is supposed to be 'fighting' for you/your child. He did not keep my child/me current on courtroom proceedings. He would forget what my child's case involved and inturn, was not an accurate support in the courtroom for my child. Sometimes he wouldn't even speak in court with the exception of stating his name for the court/Judge. He spoke and made deals with the probation officer without even speaking to my child/me. I would find out in the courtroom....can anyone say 'too late'? He did not listen he just yelled and put your child down when he actually did speak with you. He is VERY difficult to get in touch with. And equally difficult to deal with. I have many negative incidents I could mention, however, God forbid my child gets into minor trouble and ends up with Mr Nanavity again, I would not want him to be spiteful and try and get back at me through my child. He may be able to tell, or guess, at which client of his this was. Maybe not. If you cannot get a private lawyer, ask for a different public defender, if they have any. Good Luck!!!

Philip represented us when our 2 1/2 year old triplets were removed by CT DCF and local police, under false oath and affirmation. He made deals with the Asst Atty General, without our permission, and threatened to leave the case if we wanted a trial, because he felt it "was a conflict of interest, and not in the best interest of the children". This guy is a real scum bag.

I wrote to Edward Gasser, principal of this law firm.... as a result of his employee..Attorney .Lisa Anderson.... who refused to respond to participate in a complaint with the CT Dept of Consumer Protection. (They fined their client - fraud. charges.) The case was re-opened. Lisa Anderson, ( who has taken a CT Oath... under GOD to do the right thing.) ....refused to respond and to participate in the complaint .... filed..with the State of CT- Department of Consumer Protection.( construction division) The claim regarded $ 185,000 of damages to my property by her roofing client., Silktown. I supplied a 200 pages of chronological photographs, emails and a WRITTEN WARRANTY... which Silktown would not honor. Eight months later...Lisa Anderson and her Employer... appear to be above the law ...and needs not be transparent nor accountable to the State of CT....since they have not responded to the facts provided by the DCP. I will be filing a complaint with the Attorney General, CT Bar. Association and our State Senators.

Bizarre was the way David A. Slossberg dealt with our case. Utterly impossible for him to return calls. Conversations were difficult and he would go off in tangents. Incapable of straightforward, intelligent answers. Unable to separate his personal life from his work. His reputation is based on what we cannot imagine other than connections from school onward. Unappealing accross the board!

I consulted this lawyer in 1993. He asked for and I gave him a contingency fee of $1,000. The following day I called to advise him that the case had been resolved and I no longer needed his assistance. He refused to refund my money, stating that he had 'incurred expenses' . When I asked what those were, as we had only met the previous evening, he became unpleasant and again refused to return my money. He had stated to me prior to our meeting that my 1hr initial consultation with him was free of charge. I never did get my money back.

I hired Mr. Sugar to represent me in a school board case against the town of Middletown, CT regarding my employment. Mr. Sugar was ill prepared, and we lost the case. After the case was over, he proceeded to blame me and was extremely rude. I will never work with this guy or hire him again biggest regret I’ve ever ever made in my life. Extremely unprofessional. If you were looking for someone to represent you against school board, please look elsewhere, learn from my mistakes.

A family member hired this attorney under the impression he was a worker's comp attorney and after 5 years he has yet to get her case resolved. He never returns her calls and his secretary is left to answer my relatives calls and at times doesn't even allow my relative to go inside the office. Unprofessional! I am baffled that it has been so long and he has yet gotten anything resolved. If he is not a worker's comp attorney, why would he take a worker's comp case???? Isn't this unethical?

I had met her and gave her a deposit for a simple divorce $4000.00. In hind site she should have turned me away. A divorce outcome I know now is pretty much the same for everyone. Anyway I NEVER Ever saw an invoice again. My divorce was finalized and still had never seen an invoice, kinda thought I had over paid. Then low an behold a year after I received a statement for 19000.00 still no invoice for a bilk I didn't know I had. 28% interest had accrued again on a bill I didn't know existed. Of course bring mentally broken already from my divorce I didn't do a thing. I should of called and freaked out but was afraid I would get charged more to dispute my bill. The bill now is 30000.00 which would make my divorce 34000.00. Seriously. I have a perfect credit there is not s bill out there that I have ever defaulted on. She and her firm totally smoked me. Tgryte accounting practices are illegal. I'm curious if I'm the only one that got blind sided by this firm.

She was contacted by a neighbor in regards to a case with her friend. She was suppose to help with a hoarding situation, she called the neighbor. Neighbor (a DV advocate) gave some basic information, on the premise that the call was in regards to help. As a mandated reporter, the neighbor was concerned when she received a call from police. Police notified her this women had called and said there was a hoarding situation with grave concerns for the safety of children and animals there. It was to organize the house, as it is a tiny space. Absolutely horrific that this women would try and bring more trauma to a family working with the agency that was looking for help (and willing to pay). Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
