My ex-wife and I were married for almost 12 years with two children. Ryan helped me navigate the waters of our non-contested divorce when I was served papers last year. He was available through text, email, and by phone to answer all of my questions and helped me get through it unscathed. Everybody’s situation is different but Ryan helped get me the best possible solution available and I am extremely happy with the outcome. I would 100 percent recommend Ryan to other’s with any of their family court needs.

My husband and I received excellent legal advice and work from Peter (Brandt) Shelbourne and the rest of the Shelbourne Law Team. The customer service was flawless and we felt comfortable, received frequent updates on our matters, and felt that the office was extremely efficient and thorough. I would highly recommend this office for real estate transactions and probate work, the two services we have used there.

I hired Mr. Witherspoon to represent me in negotiating an IRS debt incurred through an acrimonious divorce process. He educated me, filed paperwork, advocated for my best interests, and successfully negotiated an OIC. He was efficient, effective and thorough every step of the way. Highly recommend his services.

I had John Loy as my public defender and I would be forever indebted to this man. He went above and beyond what I could have expected or anticipated. It is a scary time in someones life when they are charged with a crime. In my case I was innocent, but Mr. Loy deals with people everyday who say they are and maybe they are not, but he believed in me and fought for my life, defended me until the end & we won! He is an amazing person, truly and for the rest of my life I will remember him & have nothing, but positive things to say about Mr. John Loy. Highest respects for him & what he does. It takes a very special kind of person to do what he does & not all lawyers unfortunately take their jobs as serious as they should, but Mr. Loy got up and represented me in a way that I could not have done better myself. If you have him, rest assured you are in the best of hands... Sincerely, AB

Mr Messervy and his assistant Autumn Hazy helped me in a disastrous case where I was being asked to show cause by my ex husband, who had resurfaced after being absent for several years. My anxiety was through the roof, but Ms Hazy's excellent communication and Mr. Messervy's calm wisdom kept me grounded. Things escalated during the hearing and many other issues came up. Mr. Messervy won me back all of my attorney fees and travel expenses. Just amazing!

I live 300 miles from Summerville. My divorce was final but my ex was NOT abiding by the orders. Gina was an excellent, timely, professional, easy to talk to, reasonably priced advocate for me. I wish she'd handled the full divorce. My ex had ignored the court order, ignored the sheriffs endeavor to serve papers & anythings else he could think of to be annoying. Gina was not detoured by his non-since & was able to get everything settled without another trip to court. She knows her stuff!!!

Words can not properly describe the level of service provided by Benjy Lafond. He is not like most other lawyers and his service is very personalized making me feel like he actually cared about my case. Many lawyers have an impersonal approach and can make the family court process more frustrating, but I would recommend Benjy to anyone looking for a fair and honest approach to dealing with the tough issues associated with it. I may not have always liked what he said, but he never steered me wrong and I would not trust such personal and important issues to anyone else. If you value your family and forced to tackle issues in family court, this is who you need to call.

He represented our family in a complex SC real estate limited partnership and estate matters that progressed over 5 yrs. He was fantastic in all respects as a lawyer in a difficult and complex series of what turned out to be frivolous litigations. Ultimately we prevailed on the merits and were awarded attorney fees and costs as the litigations were frivolous. This was affirmed by the Court of Appeals and was the only case at that time for which such fees were upheld on appeal. A plus in all respects.

Mr. Thompson took on a case after another firm mishandled it. He quickly brought himself up to speed on the case which involved several months of prior work done by a lawyer who was not actually suited for this type of work. I never actually met Mr. Thompson, but we talked several times on the phone plus corresponded via e-mail. It was easy to tell immediately that he had a calm and intelligent manner from the first conversation. I could tell from the initial discussion that I was sorry I had not had him represent me from the beginning. Throughout the ensuing months, I found him to be highly responsible and empathetic to my situation and gave very wise advice. It was obvious he knew what he was talking about and gave me much-needed advice during a very difficult period in my life that was fraught with family conflict that I had never anticipated happening to the extent that it did.

It was dum luck how I first obtain free legal representation from Theresa John. She was a public defender at the time and I had just committed major felonies. It was my first time locked up and I was scared. I didn't know what to expect in any given situation; especially where my legal representation was concerned. A public defender is definitely not the first choice for anyone facing criminal charges. However, Therasa John had a reputation as the best public defender in the office; among all my fellow inmates. Every one wanted her and the reasons are simple: 1) She makes time for you; even though, she had a heavy case load. She answered your phone calls and that's something paid attorneys didn't always do. 2) She listens to your full story and then gives you real-life options on what she really can achieve. 3) And this is the best one. She comes see you with an agenda set in motion to achieve those option(s) you chose (if she had not already accomplished the task in her absence). After meeting, you really feel like something has been accomplished. In short, Theresa John has been in the trenches of the public defender office; while simultaneously, elevating her reputation as a skilled attorney to stellar heights. Now she has her own office and we have an opportunity to acquire an attorney that will handle our legal cases and give us a peace-of-mind while doing so. When facing criminal charges; you and your love ones will want a competent attorney, you can actually reach when you need to do so.

Mr. Carter is a great attorney. He has been my attorney since 2010, and I am satisfied with the way he handles and conducts business. He is very professional, and keeps me informed on what ever takes place. Without going into specifics, Mr. Carter fought for my workers comp case, and as a result I am still receiving weekly entitlements as well as medical attention after 5 years. I would and have recommended him to others.

Jennifer Purdy at Popowski & Shirley, P.A. provided exceptional legal service for my case. I was very pleased and grateful for Jennifer and her Team. I reside in Virginia. I sought an attorney to help me change the ownership of a deed to property that I own in South Carolina. Via email, I requested a quote from six South Carolina attorneys who practiced real estate law. My experience follows. Of six attorneys, two attorneys responded. Gary A Pickren (with Blair | Cato | Pickren | Casterline, LLC) was the first to respond. I researched his firm and read his profile. I liked what I read. He quoted $200.00 to complete the work and said if I provided the current deed, he’d subtract $50.00. I provided all he requested. Gary determined what I wanted and secured my business. His associates Brandon J Gregg, an associate attorney and Chris Kinon, a law clerk afterward worked with me to derive the product. They promptly answered my questions and quickly delivered the product. I found them to be a down to earth group with to work and to be professionals at preparing the product. On that note, the product looked good, so good that I had thoughts of framing it. As for their service (deed preparation and recordation), their performance was outstanding. As for their product (a deed and affidavit), the quality was excellent especially for the price. Given my experience with them, I highly recommend Gary A Pickren and his firm, “Blair | Cato | Pickren | Casterline, LLC”.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
