I never dealt with lawyers before thrust into a divorce. Malcolm was great and handled everything in a professional manner. He even connected me with an accountant to help with the financial mess. He has been responsive years later for many legal questions that have popped up in my life. I recently had him do a will and he is great. Very knowledgeable in all areas.

I was referred to Heidi through the Mass Bar Association. She took my case pro bono and was able to prove that I did not commit the crime I was accused of. She did her homework and did a great job at the trial. Later on I used her as my attorney for my divorce and she was able to get me a fair custody arrangement with my kids. I am bummed out that she is teaching now since I would hire her again for any other legal needs.

Although I infrequently write reviews, I knew I definitely had to take the time to write this one. It was personal. A while after my Father died, my husband and I were assisting my Mother in buying a car. It was at this time that we discovered not just how financially illiterate my 70 year old truly was, but also how ill-prepared she truly was with regards to end-of-life planning. As one of my siblings is a successful CFO, my husband and I mistakenly assumed that he would be guiding our Mother through routine financial management, Living Will and Estate Planning, etc...How wrong we were! After searching for the right fit for my Mom, we luckily hired Mark Swartz. Mark had been a customer of mine actually for years, and having been in town for years myself, I had heard of Mark’s fabulous legal reputation. I also knew what a solid, professional person he was. MARK BLEW AWAY MY EXPECTATIONS AND NOT JUST PROVIDED GREAT LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO MY MOM- BUT HIS EFFICIENT, COMPASSIONATE, EMPATHETIC DILIGENCE AS MY MOM’S LAWYER MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE! My Mom was very comfortable, even though she deals with severe ADD and anxiety, and she has always been extremely disorganized. Mark Swartz did a FORMIDIBLE job legally assisting my Mom. My brothers and sisters and I are all very grateful!

Excellent lawyer. He explains key issues in a simple yet thorough manner and is very easy to work with. He doesn't market his services like other lawyers. And this is precisely why he is sought after and successful. I've worked with many kinds of lawyers throughout my years and I would recommend Mr. Schissel to anyone who's looking for a real estate and family lawyer.

I would highly recommend Christine as an attorney. She handled an extremely challenging situation for me with my ex revolving our custody agreement. She took her time to fully understand our history and current situation and then worked towards a resolution that was in the best interest of myself and my children. She was very responsive, knowledgeable and took the time to explain the legal process and next steps. I would not hesitate to use her again (although hope not to have to).

Christine handled my divorce and was always thinking about my best interests. She did not let me make mistakes. She never let me give up something for nothing. She asked me what I wanted and fought for it. She was always available and promptly returned messages. I recommend her wholeheartedly and without reservation.

Christine went out of her way to answer numerous inquiries I had posted here, for which I am very thankful. At one point, I left a detailed VM for Christine seeking further advice and possible representation for which she in turn called, provided additional answers to numerous inquiries within my difficult situation knowing that as I was in a court district for which she could not represent me in. Christine is a true professional! Thank you!

Hal Beede managed to take what seemed to be an impossible situation and turn it into a win. In the process, he went above and beyond - even doing a bit of role play - to secure the funds from a lawsuit he had won for me. It all started in 2005 when a client company went out of business still owing me a considerable amount of money. Once the owner filed for Chapter 7, prospects for recovering all or part of the the owed $$ became pretty bleak. However, Hal was able to identify other officers in the company who did not seem to be seeking bankruptcy protection and filed suit against one of them. The defendant did not appear at court, so we won an award for the full amount. Easy, Actually collecting the $$ was not so easy, though. When it became clear that the individual would not pay the award, Hal did file a lien against real estate he owned. But the property was not worth all that much and was highly mortgaged. We decided to wait a while for positive developments. The wait was long ... more than ten years in fact, but Hal never gave up, constantly monitoring the status of the property and providing me with periodic status updates. The breakthrough came when a mortgage holder began foreclosing on the property in the 2017 timeframe. There were two claims ahead of mine, so I did not expect to receive much or anything from the sale of this fairly low value property. However, Hal did all the legal work needed to protect my claim. He even attended the foreclosure auction to make sure everything was done according to all proper procedures. Astonishingly, there was enough left of the proceeds to reimburse me for very close to the full amount of the original claim. I continue to be amazed at Hal's knowledge of the law, his persistence and his creativity in not just winning a suit for me but also in finding ways to secure the amount I had been awarded. I recommend him enthusiastically and without reservations

I needed a lawyer and was given several referrals- one being Hal Beede. After reviewing each lawyers website I decided to go with Hal. I liked what I read about his legal experience, education, and professionalism. He well exceeded my expectations. He brings a human approachable quality unlike many lawyers out there. He took the time to explain everything in a way that I could understand- he even hand delivered documents when I had surgery and could not drive. He is one of the "good guys" and will fight for your rights and win. Hal was not only my lawyer but became a trusted friend. I would hire Hal again no questions and would highly recommend Hal if you are seeking a more than qualified- reasonable rate lawyer.

He was recommened by our primary attorney to assit him for a trademark litigation case, finally, I left my primary attorney because of him. I paid him $5,000 retainer per his request from beginning even I don't know him at all, finally, I really think this amount is wasted for nothing, even could no get the answer for my only basic question on trademark throughout all time hired him. He looks like very nervous, scared and unconfident for my case even I am the right side with so many evidence because he even could not understand the whole story. It is really very bad for anyone to get such weak attorney, he let me feel very upset. Step by step, I recorginzed that he is unprofessional and unknowledgeable at all. The only time I called him to ask a basic question, unexpectedly he said " I can't answer you." Come on!!! you were my attorney, don't you know your obligation? or actually you do not know the answer? It is a very basic question which was anwered very clearly by my new trademark attorney right away! Additionally, I felt he billed me unreasonably, the case was not at the real stage of talking about the trademark issue, just at the stage to argue where this case should be filed. So, we do not need him much, but he sent me bill to stating his research without our request, and even sent me a useless "reminder" email without our request, followed by a bill! Of course, he waived such charge once after I disputed, but he should not do it at all as an attorney. Finally, I spent money for useless, never got any useful advice. My very upset experience with him, hope other people won't get it.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
