My father passed away in September 2023 . I know that someone passing isnt high on an attorneys lost but honesltly teying to get ahold of her is virtually imposdible . I called numerous times to ask if she had a copy of his last will and what was the next steps were and after being rude and nasty she would proceed to hang up the phone on me multiple times. I have yet to get any calls or contact from her . Just the worst .

Jack has been the most professional and helpful attorney anyone could ever ask for. He has always responded promptly and answered all of my questions in depth. His office staff in Naiagar Falls are professional and courteous. I would give Jack a 10 out of 10.

Mr. Stiefel is a highly respected expert in the Workers' Compensation Law and also a gentleman. He meets with his clients individually and is readily available for meetings at his office or their home in the event they are incapacitated. I would highly recommend him to anyone who has a work-related injury.

Bree Farming The whole experience was so much easier on me because of Mr. Stiefel. I’d HIGHLY recommend his firm and would use them again if the need arises. He was very thorough and I received benefits I did not know I was entitled to.

I would give this guy a 0 if i could. He was so incompetent. Attorney Mr Koryl couldn't even file motions or be compliant with the courts emailing system. He sabotaged my personal injury case. Then tried several times to force me to accept 15 tho for my injuries which were life threatening and on going. He napped during my court deposition. Allowing the ins company to attack me. And then i find out he...submitted nothing no witnesses no med reports nothing the defendants asked for!! My case was dismissed because of this lack of legal representation . and no other lawyer would take my case from here to Rochester because...He would have lost his license to practice and probably been disbarred . funny his phone book ad said he was very qualified. I wouldn't trust him to fill out a will. I hope justice is served for all the people and companies he robbed. Then he can go back to Canada with his duel citizenship and act like nothing ever happened. Bum lawyer.

The worst experience I have ever had with hired help. I retained Tom 2 years ago for a simple reimbursement case. I provided all receipts and correspondence. I have yet to see a single dollar from my ex or get past a single court date without the petition being dismissed for mistakes from his office, or withdrawn- for reasons unknown to me, still. When we had a court date, he would go weeks or months without contacting me to tell me how it went. I was always forced to hound him to refile! This is absurd behavior from an attorney. He was always calling me kiddo. I am a 34 year old single mother who has retained your services. Not appropriate. I constantly felt like I was being blown off and not taken seriously. In NYS, you are supposed to received billing statements from your attorney every 60 days. I have never once received one in 2 years. So I asked for one- no response. Two weeks later, asked again- received an unprofessional, 1 sentence response. 2 weeks after that- still nothing. I’m filing a complaint with the NYS bar, who was very interested in my experience with Tom; I suggest anyone else who has had similar experiences with this attorney do the same. I feel victimized by my own attorney and that should never happen.

I have to remain anonymous because of my ongoing case. But reading reviews, this lawyer I know has his own way. We all get frustrated its court !! Its our lives! But the cases I read where hes the worst? Really? Theres so much more to cases. I've had my own frustration but that's not his fault. Hes done everything I've asked and some. He is not biast he needs facts he goes off the truth. Hes honest and he understands. And well hes dealing with all our personal issues give the guy a break. We all have them hes human it didnt affect his job or guy up there u would of done legal action. I've taken my own crap out on him and he still does what he does. If the case was lost you cant blame other people for our messes we pay them to help clean it up. And maybe you shouldn't hit your child or tell your lawyer that. ! My experience is crazy bc I have a terrible ex. But he does look you in the eye that's his thing! Hes a good lawyer and will fight for you when he knows you've been dealt a hand that is ridiculous!

Charged me an outrageous fee for her services, then pawned me off on an associate after appearing in court once and dragged it out for years. Rude, unprofessional, money hungry, and uncaring. They created an essentially useless order while making me feel that mine and my child's needs were being met, and I discovered will not hold up in court. We were left in a worse position than when we started as well. RUN. These reviews are here for a reason!

My wife and I are amicable and having an uncontested divorce. We settled everything ourselves, and simply need to make things legal. She had a lawyer (representing her) draw up all the papers, and I need someone representing me to review the documents before I sign them to ensure they (legally) match our (plain language) agreement. Shelley Truex wants a minimum of $3,000 for this. $3,000 retainer paid up front, billed at $275/hr, and none of the $3,000 is refundable even if those hours are unnecessary.

Several years ago I retained Ms. Kathleen Gaines for a divorce (her address at the time was 4701 Military Rd.). Her performance never impressed me. I had to go to court on numerous occasions and nothing was achieved. Once, when I arrived at her office for a scheduled meeting, I only found unsupervised children sitting at her desk and playing with her computer. On that day, she made me wait more than half an hour. On another occasion, when she arrived late to a court date, I waved at her so that she would be aware of my presence. As if living in her own world, she just sat down to browse through the pages of her fashion and style magazine. She didn't even pay attention to what was going on in the court room. Later on, she attempted to make up stories of what had happened on that day, but she became silent when I told her that "I was in that court room the whole time." Not being able to give me any updates, she would just tell me that my case was in "limbo." There was no plan, no vision, no strategy, just a desire to continue adding hours to the monthly bill. During those years, the only true help that I received came from agencies that address domestic violence. Of all the lawyers I have hired in my life, Ms. Gaines is by far the worst one. I didn't even see honest effort on her side. Thankfully, I have come across much more efficient, reliable, and determined lawyers since then.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
