Stay away from him. It's impossible to communicate with him given his bad attitude, nasty temper and some sort of learning disability. He turned a successful case into a disastrous failure for no apparent reason. He did not discuss the pros and cons of his approach and at the end of the process his charges turned out to be more that what the opposing side had asked to settle! Then the final outcome was a financial disaster for which I have to pay with my really hard-earned money forever. He should retire or better, be disbarred. A combination of greed and bad attitude plus incompetence. There was absolutely no reason not to settle but he made his money and "took tremendous pleasure" in ignoring the opposing attorney (who was actually more professional than him) basically ignoring what was good for me but pleasing himself at my cost. The legal system is plagued by monsters like this who act with impunity.

Julie seems great on paper. Nonetheless, I hired her as a my lawyer for the divorce I was going through with my husband. She spoke in a manner so strong, I 100% thought she would be able to get me money and marital processions once the divorce was finalized. Despite being divorced now, I am in significant debt (approximately $80,000)and I barely received anything in the divorce case. Now I know, I made a bad decision when hiring her. My pockets got smaller and her and her firms pockets got fatter.

I am delighted to write this review for attorney Ms. Julie Christopher at Stein Sperling Bennett De Jong Driscoll for her excellent legal advice and for providing outstanding professional services related to my family matters. After having prior terrible experience with two family law attorneys practicing in Rockville, who drained me monetarily and emotionally, I contacted Julie. She was recommended to me by a friend who had high regards for her professionalism and in-depth knowledge in family matters. I must admit that in my very first meeting with Julie, I felt relaxed and comfortable. She attentively listened to my concerns, realized my painful situation, and assured me to get through the process as quickly as possible. In just a few months, Julie resolved all issues fairly and painlessly and finalized the divorce process. My overall experience with Julie was nothing but pleasant and positive. She is an incredibly hard-working highly knowledgeable attorney. On personal side, Julie is a very friendly and caring individual. I would highly recommend Julie to anyone looking for a dependable, reasonable, and highly qualified family law attorney with the highest level of integrity. SD

I can't imagine being more disappointed in an attorney, or any other service provider. This guy smiled and took my (and my family's) money, promised things to be included in my divorce settlement that somehow never made it in, placated me with things like "we can go back to the judge in a couple years and revisit the custody arrangement," which he only said to keep me quiet. When that time came, he would not even respond to messages or phone calls. My ex violated every premise of the divorce decree, over and over, caused enormous harm to my children, and this "attorney," once paid, never lifted a finger on their (or my) behalf again, even to answer a phone call or email. Literally ANY attorney is a better choice.

This was the employer's attorney that i proposed to work for. She is the worst lawyer i ever worked with on my immigration case. She makes u paranoid. Gives you wrong advises when u let her know what she told u was not accurate according to the other lawyers , she has no smart answer to give you, she only gives you mixture of the technical wording that u don t wanna listen to. talks and talks an hour. She was about to waste my 10 years legal status i invested in so much, in 2 months. In the end she made the employer spent over $5000 and did not get an approval to my visa. I did not only lose the job opportunity . I was paranoid, stressed out and broke. After her sloppy unsuccessful work she tried to sell me some other options to get paid more and blamed the government for her lack of knowledge on the case. She is not a lawyer just a good sales person. She sells herself very well hour an hour. Do not get trapped. There are good lawyers out there.

unexperienced staff If you don't speak Spanish, they treat you like sh.t Staff never pick up phone Once they manage to pick up do not expect to have near future date available for appointment If you are already with this law firm and you have appointment with either USCIS or immigration court, please do yourself a favor to keep checking the website for a change. I had a horrific experience with them when immigration court rescheduled me for a master hearing. the notice was sent to my former address because the law firm did not submit the change of address. i only knew the new hearing date because i went to consult another attorney for his services. i booked appointment to meet Mr. Richey, they set my date for Friday in one month time. Thursday day before my appointment, i receive a call from the front desk that Mr. Richey is not going to be in the office tomorrow that if i want to see him i have to be in the office that day at 2 pm meanwhile they were calling me around 11 am. then i asked what if i can't make it at 2 pm what is the next available time to meet then the person told me a month and half i was like forget it. i must confess it was not a pleasant conversation because they one who called me was RUDE. i gave one star just because of Mr. Richey himself the few occasions i met with him he seems knowledgeable to me with a great heart. the reality is that no matter how good the head may be if the other members are not good it will slow you down or even hinder you get to your destination

First of , Mr. Stuart Yeager charged me 1200 to file in a paper. After I paid him he stops answering the calls , he will set up phone appointment and never answer them too! When I drove into his office and he said he could not talk and that he would call me, he never did! His is very rude , arrogant and will ignore you as soon as you pay him! Immigration sent him a paper saying I need to show up to court, unfortunately his assistant ''forgot'' to tell me about it, now immigration wants me deported! If I could give this lawyer (firm) 0 stars I would!

My siblings and I hired Mr Canseco to attend to my Mothers Financial matters after her death. My emails and phone calls were ignored. My sisters persistent phone calls and emails were finally responded to after 5 months. If we had not already sent him the original Tax records, we would have gone to another attorney. When the work was finally completed, I received a outrageous invoice for the services.

I hired Mr Canseco in 2011 to represent us in the US Tax Court. After getting his retainer fee, he only filed a 1 or 2 page petition in Court and then waited 8 months to surrender my case. He tried to settle my case without my express knowledge and consent with the IRS. He made a mistake when I found out about this so I fired him. I took over the case and I found out several things he never did that was his obligation to do as my counsel. He never responded to IRS request for documents which I already gave him. After months of request, the IRS had to file 2 motions in court to get this and the Court rendered an order to make him produce the docs and interrogatories. He never complied with it. His game plan was to surrender my case in the hope that I will go along with him to compromise it for just a small amount (15 cents to a dollar), But he was sloppy and I found out all what he did to my case. I wrote him thru emails and demanded a written apology and return of my money but he never did nor even bothered to directly reply to my emails. He never had the intention to prepare for trial since he advised us that our presence is no longer needed and we can leave for the Philippines and retire.

He has a tacky associate that really has limited experience in what he advertises for representation. Stay far, far away

Was referred to Mr. Riffkin from a colleague about estate planning. He only partially completed the job, but not before I had paid him in full. Since then he has been VERY unresponsive. To repeatedly try and get a response for 2 months is not reasonable. However, before he was paid, he was responsive. Lesson - don't pay in full until every part of the service is completed.

Steve Greenfeld was dismissive and judgmental - like he didn't want us as clients. The process of declaring bankruptcy is already emotionally taxing and humiliating. The last thing we needed was Greenfeld questioning our (reasonable) spending habits (i.e. "You spend $50/month on HOUSEHOLD CLEANING PRODUCTS?? That's ridiculous! I’ve never heard of someone spending so much!" or “You spend $95 just to get your hair done??” Please excuse me, but the last time I checked, (1) it is not my bankruptcy attorney’s job to judge how I spend my money for reasonable living expenses and (2) $95 is the going rate for beauticians. I have to maintain a professional appearance for my career! His behavior was unnecessary AND unprofessional. We filed bankruptcy because I lost my only source of income (my job) 8 months prior, and I was the breadwinner! We always had the feeling that he looked down on us and felt like he was doing us a favor. We never felt like he had our best interests at heart or cared about us at all. He could have pushed to have us file Chapter 7 because we were on the cusp of the means test. But his “considerable influence” (his words) with the Trustee wasn’t used for our benefit. So, we had to file Chapter 13 instead. Even after we finished paying off our Wage Earner’s Plan (early, might I add), he refused to complete our filing so we could have our case dismissed and move on with our lives! After a few months of him ignoring my calls to his office to get him to comply, I was completely fed up! So, I started keeping a record of every time I tried to contact him, with the results. I visited his office in person and was told that he wasn’t there. The next time I visited, I left a letter with his receptionist, which he said he did not receive. Next, I sent a certified letter threatening to sue him if he didn’t file our case with the Trustee. It was ONLY THEN, that our case was mysteriously filed with the Trustee, and our case dismissed. That process took AN ENTIRE YEAR! That is inexcusable! I WOULD NOT recommend Steven Greenfeld to anyone who does not look like him. He obviously feels he is superior and doesn’t need business from persons of color. So, humor him and find someone more qualified and antiracist!

At $350 per hour and seeing him on a recommendation from another lawyer I was hoping for more than a impatient and arrogant attitude. We had barely reviewed my intake sheet and started to discuss more details. I had been sitting with him for 10 minutes or less before I asked anything. I wanted to know more about him before disclosing more personal information. He went rough my intake sheet and as he asked about some of the info on the sheet with regard to the sums of the balance in one of my kids accounts I stopped and said I have a few questions before we go further. He sat back in a huff and said I've been doing this for 35 years and we ARE going to go through my questions but you just go ahead and do yours now OK! Total red flag.... I had JUST met him and he gets huffy? He said this is such a rude and unprofessional way and then he actually pushed his papers away and sat back with his arms crossed. I was shocked. I'm there to hire HIM! In that moment I thought I'm out of here. I said to him calmly after gathering myself and said, I think I'm done. I'm. It doing this with you. He said ok, grabbed the papers and said "good night then" and he stomped out of the office. I gathered my things and told the front desk he was the rudest and most unprofessional attorneys I've ever met. They looked at me and probably knew exactly what I meant. Last person I would want on my side. Seriously, if you can't get past the intake paperwork how are you going to get anywhere! Not worth the $4 I paid for parking.

Ed Haenftling (pronounced "Hen - Fling") is an attorney whom I would not recommend for counsel on any legal matter which a potential client may wish to have addressed either in a court of law or in settling a private affair. Mr. Haenftling is a bit "wet behind the ears" with regard to how he carries himself and not prompt or timely in returning phone calls or keeping said clients up to date on their cases. Not in the least. Mr. Haenftling struck me as dismissive of various tacts / ideas / suggestions that I posited to him regarding the case in which he was representing me, but alas, he was able to either come up with ambiguous reasons as to why they were not valid -or- were based upon his "consultation with other attorneys" (just whom - i.e. "names" were not given) as to how to proceed with my case. Ed strikes me as the type of individual who knows that they are in a position of authority (elected authority that is ... he was voted in and can easily be voted out), is making a nice salary, yet will get by with just enough effort in order to maintain that position come round next election time. Seemed to be more concerned with adding "Wins" in his portfolio rather than "Maybes" or even "Losses". If you case is of the latter pair, then expect little enthusiasm from Mr. Ed in seeing that justice will be served. In closing, avoid this guy like the proverbial "Plague" and if you vote, be sure to cast a vote for a truly qualified attorney come next primary date. Best wishes, Former Client

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
