I have unfortunately encountered and been harassed directly by 2 different attorneys, Ben Torrence and Jasmine Dwelkotte, with Antonyan Miranda that are under Ilona Antonyan’s management. It is obvious Antonyan Miranda promotes and encourages its attorney’s to be aggressive, demeaning and harassing to initimdate opposing clients. It’s very disgusting and unprofessional. Be warned this law firm fights dirty and below the belt, without facts to back their accusations!

My experience with attorney Marc has been deeply unsatisfactory and potentially jeopardized my safety. Since retaining his services in May 2023 for a domestic violence case, I have been compelled to manage much of my own legal affairs due to his persistent lack of communication and engagement. Marc couldn't follow up with you or call you back even if he tried. Marc's professional conduct has been alarmingly negligent. Despite numerous attempts to contact him, he remained unresponsive for months, only deigning to call me ONE day before our hearing. This left me uncertain about his commitment to my case and I wasn't even sure if he would show up to the hearing. When Marc did appear for the hearing, his lack of preparation was glaringly evident. He struggled with basic case details, failed to pose pertinent questions, and most egregiously, neglected to submit critical evidence to the court. His oversight resulted in the judge disallowing crucial video and transcript evidence - a fundamental error that no competent attorney should make. As a woman facing a dangerous situation, I entrusted Marc with my safety, explicitly requesting the same level of support that he would provide his own daughter. Instead, I received treatment worse than one might expect from the DMV. His apathy towards my circumstances and the gravity of my case has left me feeling completely abandoned, vulnerable, and in distress. Let me add the conduct of Marc's paralegal, Tim, who was highly unprofessional and borderline predatory. After Tim had stalked my social media, Tim made an unsolicited, intoxicated call to me late one Sunday evening, making inappropriate comments about my appearance while he was on vacation with his wife. This behavior is unacceptable and raises serious questions about the firm's ethical standards. Even worse, Marc informed me that he did fire Tim after this incident in May of 2023 , however after looking at multiple recent reviews, it seems Tim is still quite active at Marc's firm. Marc's failure to meet the basic standards of his profession - including adequate communication, case preparation, and client advocacy - amounts to legal malpractice. I intend to seek a full refund and, if necessary, pursue legal action to recoup all of my losses. I have meticulously documented all interactions with Marc's office from the outset, including every phone call, text, and email sent to try and reach him, which will serve as evidence of his professional negligence. This experience has not only been deeply disappointing but has potentially compromised my safety in a critical domestic violence case. Hiring Marc has been one of the worst decisions I have made in my life and I will be reporting him to the Calfornia State Bar where he already has cases against him. Feel free to review Case Number SBC-22-O-30894 for Suspension Stayed/Probation active as of May 26, 2023. On April 26, 2023 (I wish I saw this sooner), Marc Kohnen, State Bar Number 255303 was suspended from the practice of law in California for one year. Do your research, or don't even waste your time and go look for another attorney besides Marc Kohnen.

Divorce is always a difficult experience and having the proper attorney to help you navigate the court system is a must. Months after my last court date I hadn't yet received a final judgement draft so I send the attorney an email inquiring about it. After numerous emails back and forth one of his responses to me was, "You are divorced, its just paperwork." I disagreed with him stating I didn't have any county recorded paperwork. He then replied, "The paperwork doesn't matter." I continued to request that the final judgement and paperwork be sent for the Judge's approval and County recording immediately. His final email to me was, "The paperwork's done. I hope you are happy now."

Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.

Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.

  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.

For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
