I'm convinced that Ann Riley is the most ethical, competent, and intelligent divorce attorney in the Bay Area. I interviewed a lot of lawyers and many of them were simply not confident about the law and fairly apathetic. Ann really cares in a way that is helpful. She doesn't waste your time, she is able to be firm when needed, and is extremely logical. She has a good understanding of the family court system in SF. Opposing counsel was unprofessional and difficult and Ms. Riley refused to engage, knowing that it would cost me more if she did so and that it wouldn't get me any further ahead. A lot of attorneys like to engage in time wasting activities because they know they can get away with billing you for them - there wasn't a single line item in Ms.Riley's bill that was questionable - she deserved every penny of her retainer. I wish I had met Ann under different circumstances but I'm really grateful to have met her when I did. She gives me hope that there are still decent and good people who find value in doing the right thing.

I hired Elisabeth Heck to resolve my case with my landlord & reach to a settlement. We reached a settlement but she never provided me the settlement agreement which she said she filed in the court. She lied about filing in the court on particular date. When after multiple requests of providing the settlement agreement signed & filed she ignored my requests then I visited court & found out that totally different settlement agreement was submitted by adding last page of my signature & rest of the agreement was changed which was filed on a different date as she stated. When i informed her she said that the opposing attorney filed it fradulently & she will tell her to fix everything immediately & if she does not correct then she will file motion to enforce the settlement agreement & vacate the judgments & she also stated she will request sanctions for her behavior in court. The opposing attorney refused to fix & she then talked to one of the partners of that law firm who promised that he will get everything fixed. Unfortunately, he never complied by his promise & Ms Elisabeth Heck promised that if they fix by certain date then she will file motions to enforce the correct settlement agreement & vacate the judgments . I trusted her & gave her several opportunities to get everything fixed as she stated that one of the partners of that law firm who promised everything to be fixed is her previous colleagues & is very trustworthy. Ms Elisabeth Heck gave the law firm 4 months to fix everything as she continued procrastinating filing motion to enforce correct stipulated agreement. She kept telling me she will file motions if they dont fix what they said. I kept requesting her updates & demanding her to file motions & sanctions but she would take weeks to reply with excuse that she was busy in court. Then she replied after few weeks that she signed some declaration forms to get everything fixed & she never shared those documents with me to review before signing on my behalf. Even after that those applications were never filed in court & then she stated she will file motions & sanctions by so and so date if they comply with the promises. When that date came she texted me that she's going on family emergency for few days & all documents have been filed in court. I went to court to confirm & found out nothing has been filed since September 2018. I then notified her that nothing has been filed & demanded a truthful response. Unfortunately, she never replied back & i even visited her office to get hold of her as my only intention was to get everything fixed so i could visit my country for holidays. When i could not get hold of her I prepared a demand letter and sent her as a certified mail with return recept requested through usps. While I was in middle of sending her that letter she emailed me that shes terminating client / attorney relationship because i tried to visit her office. Finally, I sent her certified mail hoping to get everything fix but even after receiving my demand letter she never replied back. Its been 6 months , she could not perform her duties as promised & her behavior was completely unethical, unprofessional..shady My case is still pending, fraudulently filed settlement agreement was never corrected, judgements never got vacated & she put my credit at risk even after paying the landlord one month extra rent after vacating & case never got dismissed as per agreements. I highly request consumers not to go through my kind of traumatizing & devastating humiliating experience I faced..

I hired Joanna Kozubal to deal with a real estate matter where it seems to me that she needs better interpersonal skills and to follow ethics and lawyer rules to resolve it in a satisfactory way and not waste a lot of my time and money. She won't follow my instructions, especially with regards to talking with the other party and won't give legal or ethical reasons for not following my instructions which are not illegal or unethical in any way as far as I can tell. I finally resorted to emailing the other party and just CCing her on this email. I requested a refund from her due to her incompetence and she refused to give me one.

Joanna really knows her stuff. I needed to evict a tenant and hired Joanna. I was impressed with her service, especially her attitude. She was very professional and personable. She was a very good listener and very patient with me. I was not the most pleasant person to work with and she handled it well. She got the tenant out within six weeks! She saved me a lot of time and money. She insisted I take a deal letting a crazy tenant stay rent free for the remaing six weeks and cut the potential legal cost of a full eviction. She had us sign a stipulated agreement stating the tenant will be out by no later than May 31. Everything worked out and the crazy tenant left. Even though money was not an issue for me, she kept insisting on saving me money.

Bryan is an interesting lawyer. He seems awesome then you see how he treats his clients. He will talk down to you, in fact, swear at you. He will blame you for not knowing things and get upset at the very end for major details that he and his partner should have resolved at the beginning; things that effect your ultimate settlement. Also pay very close attention between what he says is the rate and what you sign in your contingency agreement. He says one thing and then takes the bigger chunk at the end with no recourse available to the client. He generally settles or wins so that is the only reason I'll say I'd recommend him. Just be prepared to pay to be disrespected on multiple occasions, be prepared for him not to do his early homework-waiting till the end to realize that particularities needed to be handled when he first takes a case, and be prepared to hear their rate is 'x %' when in reality it is 'y %'. I had more stress from dealing with this attorney in some ways then the actual personal injury I sustained. Anyway, he's a pretty good lawyer with a very abrasive personality. If you can find another pretty good lawyer without these issues, then go for it! Good luck to you all!

I engaged him to for counsel in a business matter. Very good in the beginning, very attentive and processed the issues very efficiently. Very satisfied with his long term advice and counsel. The issue that I had was he became hard to get a hold of and VERY slow in responding to my emails/phone calls as the matter started to age. I am paying for his time and advice. To be clear, have have no issues with his billing (I was not billed for his later responses). It was just much delayed. I would have rated him higher if not for this.

Management of my company knows Brett Schuman to be capable. Our only issue is that we felt shunted off to junior associate Rachel Samec and that our legal work suffered a bit as a result of miscommunication and other idiosyncrasies. We'd have preferred more direct help from Schuman himself. Our business is perhaps too small to rate access to the big players.

Kent cannot be trusted to have any of your interests in mind. He shamelessly inflated his timesheet on what, even her claimed to be, was a very simple case. He conveniently inflated his timesheet to complete his entire retainer. Once the case was dismissed in my favor, he took a call from the opposing party, charging me for that, and then setting up a meeting with her which he would further charge me for. There was no reason for him to take the call or create a meeting, it would extend a case that was over, essentially working against me. He also charged me for filling out paper work to pursue the prevailing party's clause which he never actually submitted. truly fraudulent.

We were referred to her for a case involving 3 dogs that were in my care as fosters for a local rescue for well over a year that we wanted to adopt after finding out the rescue wanted to terminate one for being a bully breed and possibly "unadoptable." She started out strong as far as emails go, saying we would have a good case against them and their unrealistic attitudes and demands. She did nothing to help us resolve this case but give the opposing counsel money amounts on what we could do to settle the case without consulting me some of the times. She was rude, unprofessional and charged me ridiculous amounts of money she had me pay through her "non profit" page and got us no where. Stay clear of her, she has no interest in helping animals.

Christine doesn't care about animals. She actually gets mad at you for asking legal questions. I wrote her an email regarding my town's SPCA that commits ongoing animal cruelty. She responded telling me to call her the next day. I did and she said, "Remind me what your emailss was about. Whenever someone writes more than 2 sentences I just have them call me". It sounded like she never even read my email. I explained the animal cruelty at the animal shelter in detail. I thought she'd be shocked to hear that these poor animals were treated so cruelly. Her response was "Umm..hmm..." and interrupted frequently hurrying the conversation. Then she told, "You want the animal shelter to sue you." Then she told me to look up this website and advised that I provoke the animal shelter to sue so I could get this Whistle Blower organization to represent me for free. WHAT?! I told her I wanted to know her fees so she could bring a case against the animal shelter. She said, "I have child and I really don't have time." I have to go take care of MY now. MY CHILD needs me. She became very dramatic and angry. As if I was to blame for the fact her website was still up asking for business. First, how could she be so cold when hearing about systemic animal cruelty? Second, she told me to provoke a lawsuit on myself? What kind of nutty legal advice is that? What kind of lawyer tells someone to go get sued? I made it clear I was willing to pay to bring a case against the animal shelter. Furthermore, she doesn't even care that in the time it would take me to get sued more animals would be subjected to cruelty. Third, why is she acting like I'm the one taking her away from her child? I don't know her. She's the one who told me to call her! Something is really wrong with this woman. I don't think she's mentally all there.

I prefer not to give any star to lawyer Robert Wyman who is laid back, not actively and proactively to fight for my medical treatment from worker compensation, the assistant asked me to apply the medical treatment through my insurance if any needed treatment gets rejected by worker compensation insurance. That sounded ridiculous, my health insurance won't cover any injury related to work, so I ended up without needed treatment offered for months but suffering pains daily basis. Secondly, before deposition, Robert didn't prep me well, only called for 45 minutes on the date of deposition, and his instructions was so off from the real deposition, 2 hours deposition online, Robert didn't support me at all, I was interrogated fully by the WC lawyer. I was not impressed with his knowledge. His receptionist does not speak clearly into the phone and is rude and uncaring. He gave us a list of papers to prepare for immigration and critical information was missing, only his fees, which are $5,000 for a retainer. Under no circumstances should you consider asking David Donner to help you. He will milk your case while trying to assert that he's discounting his billing, and he will leave your divorce, custodial matter, and relationships in far worse condition than he found them, after wasting years (more than you expect at the outset) and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hiring David is a guaranteed defeat for your family. The only winners will be him and his cronies that he will seek to bring in or refer you to. I know from over two years of experience working with him. The outcome could not have been worse. Relating to my divorce, retaining him was by far the worst decision I've made. He sounds like he's going to help in the beginning, but his work is poison and will leave a wake of discord. If you could buy him for what he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth you'd be the richest person on the planet. He loves to hear himself speak. He thinks he's paid by the syllable. He could draft a one page memo in 40 pages at $600 an hour. Good luck to you. Seek help elsewhere.

Our case was a significant and complex case with the table filled with attorneys (for the county, for the foster boys, for the mother, for one of the fathers). Each ruling towards the appropriate termination of parental rights were appealed along the way. As the foster/adoptive parents, we were not represented until we hired David. It was the longest parental rights termination case in California at the time (in part due to the multiple appeals). But David navigated our interests well and ensured that the termination process kept the focus on the readiness of the parents for reunification (and in our case, they were not ready/fit to be parents). Thank you David for helping us and our boys!!

Worst attorney ever! I hired this man to represent me on my divorce. Though I know that there are no winners in a divorce, this man made me lose everything, my house, furniture, cars, and I almost lost my two kids. Chris Hall initially did a fairly good job for me. However, when he felt the case was becoming a money loss for him, he began to distance himself from his professional duties. He then failed to appear for numerous court appearances, including 2 sentencing hearings despite being contracted for all appearances. Things got pretty bad when I was provided with bad legal advise, and entirely misled into believing his experience and competence were much greater than in reality. He advertised that he does immigration law, and yet failed to inform me of the consequences of such during a forced plea entry without notice. That is just a small taste of my experience. I would pursue every possible alternative, and would actually recommend self-representation over this attorney.

He did nothing but bs about how fantastic and successful he was at wrongful terminations and sexual discrimination, only to fold at every turn of our suit. He did absolutely nothing but take what little money we had and made us look and feel like fools. If it appears to him he might actually have to work, (We did all our work for him and he would try to charge us for that), he shuts down leaving you to defend yourself from the oncoming lawyers. He is very arrogant, unprofessional and was a BIG BULLY toward us! PLease search harder and find the right person for the job... never Daniel Ray Bacon!!!!!!

BEWARE!!!! Our family hired Daniel Ray Bacon for a dispute over a trust. It turns out that Bacon does not handle this area of law but took our case boasting about how versed he was. Bacon strings you along, promising that your case is really strong. He bills you for subpoenas, depositions, all the while stating he's gathering "evidence." His depositions clearly show he's grasping for straws and unprepared. His plan from the get-go is to bill, bill, bill and urge you to settle before any trial can occur, because that is where his flawed work as an attorney all comes out. We eventually left Bacon after one year and about $100,000 in legal fees. It was our mistake picking Bacon. After finding a real expert in trust law, we realized that Bacon wasn't even fighting the right battles. There were fundamental errors made by Bacon which showed he was oblivious to trust law. In fact, based on the manner of how he conducts his deposition, I'm flabbergasted that he had enough competence to pass the state BAR. Bacon is downright incompetent. For example, Bacon assumed that assets in the trust were properly deeded to the trust when all the while, they were left in the name of the trustor. He failed to realize this. Once brought to his attention, he stated that it was not an issue which it turned out to be. Bacon was fighting for a trust that was never properly funded to begin with and never saw this huge problem. Google Bacon in the California BAR and you will find adverse action was taken on him previously. He was "suspended for one year, stayed, placed on two years of probation with an actual 60-day suspension, and was ordered to take the MPRE within one year." This man is downright dangerous, stay away! He will hurt your pocket book, but worse, he will hurt you while you are involved in a lawsuit. Bacon is best described as the quintessential lawyer that our society loves to hate.

Twice Mr. Bacon has served us very well. First, in my wife's discrimination case, he was able to negotiate a fair settlement in a timely manner. Second, in my wrongful termination case, while up against a gang of vicious lawyers, inept or prejudiced state officials, and a thoroughly biased judicial system, over a three year period he was able to keep my case alive and in the end negotiate a settlement.

This attorney is my attorney and I know for a fact he is not a business attorney. There are several attorneys in San Francisco with the same name. Mr. Murphy handled my very sensitive custody battle and I have never met an attorney who would go to bat for his clients like him. Thanks to Mr. Murphy, I have full custody of my daughter and she is now safe and sound.

A friend recommended Mr. Murphy to me for a legal matter about 3 years ago. I hired him again recently. Something is affecting his brain. On this recent occasion, Mr. Murphy mixed up a key detail, misplaced a document, and failed to keep me informed. Moreover, I needed to make about 3 phone calls to get one return call from him.

I had used him to handle my case, I don't think he negotiate much for me. He simply an agent to transfer messages between 2 parties, not have lawyer function to negotiate. Definitely would not recommend him.

A warning to out-of-state attorneys. I have paid and applied to take the Bar this month. Just found an email in my junk folder stating I need a certificate of good standing or else my application will be cancelled and no refund given. From where I don't know. there is no contact information. No correspondence on my applicant portal. After paying over $3000 I am astonished how poorly this process has gone. My application and admission to Minnesota was nothing like this. Impossible to talk to someone on the phone. All this after my application was not accepted because there was no button to submit statements on the application. Incredibly poor performance.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:

  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.

  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
