Research Arlo Hale Smith's state bar record before you hire him. I was unaware of his prior suspensions when I hired him to handle a few cases for me. He was also representing my ex husband and his business partner at the same time without having anyone sign conflict waivers. Needless to say this arrangement had a negative outcome for me. I do not recommend.

I hired him to represent an out of county case. Unfortunately, I learned too late that I should have hired a local attorney instead, he was completely untrustworthy and extremely vindictive He caused irreparable damage to my case and hasn't returned $30,000 he accepted, although he quit the case.

Mr. Kodani is the worst employment attorney, stay far away from him. He is completely and utterly incapable of answering questions and if you ask him too may questions regarding your case he becomes highly upset. He never returns emails, phone calls, or text messages in a time manner. He decided to drop my case after 4 months into it because I asked way too many questions. I asked him during the 4 months has he even started the case and his answer was not yet! I couldn't understand what he was waiting for considering I gave him every piece of evidence he asked for. He started my case at the end od 2011, we are in the beginning of 2012 (March) and yet no progress and he decides to drop my case due to the fact I ask way too many questions. If you decide to use this attorney, you're better off representing yourself!!

Ms. Wodinsky's demand letter said that her office had conducted a "non-public investigation" of Native Essence and determined that the company's website contained "false and/or unsubstantiated claims" that "induced" customers to buy certain herbal products. This itself was a false statement. Ms. Wodinsky and her staff never interviewed any of Native Essence's customers. Indeed, many of the website statements deemed illegal by Ms. Wodinsky offered firsthand customer testimony praising Native Essence's products and customer service

As the result of a mediation conducted by Mr. Madden, I have a statement that I signed that I cannot read because he refused to give me the agreement typed. I agreed verbally to something which I was told was written within the agreement. Now the other party says the statement says something else. This is with regards to getting an outside study done, which by law we can conduct ourselves. The estimated cost that Mr. Madden suggested would be for $450-500. A well-informed real estate lawyer has told me that is an unreasonable estimate and that a reasonable estimate is closer to the $1000 that we are now getting. The other party insists that the agreement says if it is more than $500, we have extra time to do the study. I never wanted to spend the unnecessary $500 and definitely do not want to spend more. I felt bullied into signing an agreement that I could not read and now being expected to fulfill something I never would have agreed to. I would never recommend a lawyer who expects me to sign something handwritten, let alone handwriting that I can not read. I would also never recommend a lawyer who is not competent enough to make suggestions during a mediation that can be accomplished ( a study for $500).

This attorney is not an attorney of his word. He is merely filing or allowing hired staff to file bogus and frivolous cases in which the higher courts have ruled years ago (thirsty). He was merely accusing the Riverside Court as just standing around at this court as if they do nothing all day? What happened to loyalty which he has none to his fellow colleagues? This attorney needs to be reprimanded by the State Bar for sure.

He took one month to review and modify an agreement that another lawyer drafted. Other lawyers that I've worked with have taken hours or at most, a couple of days to do the same level of work. I do not feel that he was responsive. I would not recommend him.

He pled guilty for me against my wishes and open protest in court, and stated false information to the court on my behalf. Because of the false information, l was fined/ punished for something l did not do. l did not choose him, he was assigned to me by the court. This man has worked for the City of San Francisco at the Public Defender's Office for years. A large number of other defendants were assigned to him by the court as well. To my knowledge, he was placed by the city in a venue other than the Superior Court for a period of time after misconduct that l personally witnessed as a client-- there may have been more that were called to attention of his employer. l have no doubt that if he was not employed by the city, he would not have a career in law as he will have to effectively serve his clients. l post without revealing my name to avoid retaliation.

Ms. Ito charged us a $5000 retainer to produce a trust document for our grandchildren. After our initial interview, we sent her many emails, detailing specific items we wanted in the trust. However, her first draft did not reflect what we had requested. When we called in our financial and insurance advisors to help clarify what we needed, she became defensive and hostile. In what we felt was an extremely unprofessional act, she terminated our contract by letter, keeping all of the money, and leaving us without a usable product. Stay away from Ms. Ito.

She did not have clear understanding of our immigration case and has caused us more harm then any help in our US immigration. She is inexperienced and does not understand the sensitivity and urgency required to handle an immigration case. I spoke with two another attorneys for a second opinion and they both agreed that her handling of the case was incorrect and someone with knowledge of US immigration system will be better able to handle our case. I had to hire another attorney to fix problems created due to her incorrect filing of our paperwork. It has caused us decades of delay in US immigration. I will not recommend her for any US immigration related guidance. Take your business elsewhere or ask for another attorney if you were to work with her.

My experience working with Brian and his team was beyond terrible, I highly recommend you stay away from this lawyer. He barely worked my case and had a paralegal on it the whole time who did nothing but talk about herself and her past illnesses and accidents rather than listening to what I was experiencing and helping me get the care I needed. I was only able to get the care and help I needed once I found a new lawyer and fired their team. The list of issues I had with them is extensive.... Their team and their doctors had terrible communication and were sloppy. They barely listened to me and made extremely sexist remarks. I have listed issues I had with this team on Yelp and Google reviews, please read and save yourself the suffering.

I really wish I didn't hire this guy based on a short and misinformed consultation. He had no idea what he was talking about he was not prepared when it came to the actual courtroom he didn't know details about specific laws that he's supposed to specialize in and he objected to stuff that really has no reason to object to and didn't object to stuff that absolutely had to have an objection. I have very little experience in the courtroom, however, I was very close to just firing him on the spot and taking over as my own attorney because this guy Dan Riley wasn't just a very poorly educated man, but he was also quite funky smelling and he looked so greasy and sweaty on his shiny bald head that it made me constantly lose focus on the important matters because I kept getting a flash due to the reflection off of his forehead.

At the beginning of out case they were great and communicated on where things stood and the process. Now that the litigation is done and we are dealing with the “bankruptcy” company part. I only hear from them when they need something. I have left multiple messages with no response. I called back in May because we were waiting on a settlement check (that was confirmed they had sitting in their trust account) and as of October we still haven’t gotten the disbursement. It just seems that they don’t care and you are a waste of their time once the court stuff is done.

Mr. Peretz took more then half of my out-of-court settlement. $193,000 out of $375,000. I was advised by a federal bankruptcy trustee that this was way out-of-line and would not be permitted in most states and in particular New Jersey. I was wrongfully terminated in 2008 and after 5 years ended up with roughly $60,000. How is this ok in California? After all I was the victim and Mr. Peretz's firm did very little to justify this type of payment in a relatively easy out-of-court settlement. A few motions and a couple of hours in mediation.

This man is a horrible lawyer, as far as I’m concerned he is a criminal, and a bully - he billed my family over $80,000 and didn’t fight to present crucial evidence when it came down to the wire.. He is a liar, a megalomaniac, a horrible person, and I would absolutely NOT recommend him unless your willing to waste tens of thousands of dollars to listen to him lecture and insult you while telling you crucial evidence is worthless. He abandoned me twice during hearings he promised to appear for, as he said he would not leave me out to dry - yet abandoned me day of the trials/hearings and I lost horribly due to his malpractice and misrepresentation of his skill set I went in on my own for trial and was ten times more effective than he was in all three years of his representation combined! I will gladly share more information with anyone considering hiring Wallace. Unlike him, I’m not scared to present it. He has threatened to sue me for defamation when he knows he’s failed me as an attorney - the only thing he did well was a deposition - which Yorker a ton of evidence he never presented. This man is a joke and a hot head - do not waste your money or energy depending on him to do the honest Abe ethical thing. Feel free to message me for further detail and evidence. I’m reporting him to the bar and trying to recover the money wasted on this man’s ego.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
