This guy commanded the respect of the judge and the prosecutor as soon as he walked in the room. At first I was concerned when he told the family no one with ethics can make any guarantees in criminal defense, but when he went to work it was simply amazing the way he defended my brother. He got the acquittal, but more importantly he assured justice for our family. I highly recommend him.

Ronald Ross worked with me for several years in Virginia. Ron worked in the energy field and was a great asset. He worked on corporate law and helped on many unusual transaction structures. We worked with many outside law firms and large investment banking firms. He is very sophisticated and bright. He has a Harvard education. He is charming and well read. You will be happy to have his insights. Our office budget was very large and the deals were very complicated. He never complained about the work load. I wish him continued success and hope that he runs for office in the future. He has a great gift in protecting and representing the best interest of others.

Mr. Trpis is by far a very dedicated and passionate person. I met him from a television commercial about medical malpractice in which he represented my young daughter. I was a single mother of three girls when I met him living in low income housing. He took on my daughters case on a contingency of he would get paid if he won the case. We became very close throughout the case. He was interested in how all of my children were evening when the case was over. I believe he was our gift from God. Thank you Martin for your dedication and passion for the work you do. The Jackson family.

Ms. April Downs was kind enough to represent a family member who had no representation. Not only was she able to get him released on an uninsured bond, she took time afterward to explain exactly what needed to happen next. In addition, she responded to my questions via an email on a Sunday!! She is a very smart, extremely kind and considerate lady. If anyone wants the job done right Ms. Downs is the attorney to see.

I had my home raided because a roommate was smoking marijuana and my life came to an end when I was arrested a week later and charged with Felony Trafficking of Narcotics and Possession of an Assault Rifle during a Drug Trafficking crime, among a dozen other charges. I was just about to graduate from Maryland and I was facing 46 years, and had all of my legally purchased firearms, and my substantial life savings ripped out of my safe and taken because the Gaithersburg Police had found an unlabeled prescription bottle of Adderall and a few other substances in the house, mostly in other people's rooms. I thought that best case scenario, I get 3 years even though I was innocent. While I cannot get too far into the details as of this review version, take my word that the scenario was really damning. That's when a friend referred me to Jeff, who people have always said to be your best shot at winning, especially if return of property is also sought. The moment I first met with Jeff (statutes in hand) and saw how completely prepared and confident he was, I felt like I my odds had changed for the better. He is Ultra dedicated to what he does and researches the laws far more thoroughly than any other attorney I have had and will blow holes in the arguments and strategies of the best Montgomery County prosecutors, immediately and directly calling them out on every slip up they make to hurt you, and also foreseeing the mistakes they will make that will help your case. Not only did he get the charges wiped out despite the shady maneuvering by the state (recharging me multiple times and changing the charges), but he had my property and all of the currency RETURNED TO ME by quickly putting up a wall against their civil forfeiture case. In more cases than this one, he has been an attorney that practically pays for himself in what he gets you back! But again, the most important thing to me and anyone charged is first to prevent prosecution and second to walk you through the legal gauntlet unscathed. For this, he was also terrific. Jeff took my calls no matter when and where and when I had a bench warrant for an unrelated traffic matter during this case and that attorney was not answering my calls, Jeff made calls and motions and had the warrant quashed in 24 hours so I didn't have to step foot in a jail. He will be handle your case very personally and literally come out to aid you in getting affidavit evidence, or receiving property in person, preventing the authorities from giving you the run-around! I know two other people who have been represented by Jeff, one of them also a Defense attorney, and all of whom walked. I agree with them that unlike other attorney's, like the ones who send you letters, Jeff doesn't look for pleas to take, he fights! I'm not sure how he would like me re-coining a phrase like 'Just Call Jeff' because he is such a professional, but if you have big charges and you want the best outcome, you will thank yourself for bringing his top-shelf representation.

Merritt managed patent infringement cases on our company's behalf. His work was highly professional and very effective. In the end, Merritt very succesfully extricated us from a situation that could have spelled ruin for our company. In addition, his work resulted in minimal damage costs, and he managed to keep his fees very reasonable. Further, the results he achieved have also ensured that the plaintiffs in our case, who are extremely aggressive, have been kept at bay and despite their best efforts, have been neutered in their ability to further litigate the case. We are very satisfied with the results.

My case kept stalling which made my mother worry and my family including me. But having more confidence in this lawyer who happens to be from NC as well!. But yes I just pray to have this case dismissed I just want to stay here in the south with my family. My only reason to visit up there was because of an old relationship I rushed into so it was a major mistake even moving away from my family like that so that she could be with her’s we never managed good enough with things so that’s why I left her to go back to my own family. So again as she said NJ is crazy and not to ever visit on the phone I agree with is bc she knows how blessed I am and set up to live here with family vs being alone up north and know anyone at all so again I just pray this case gets worked out and Diane Will be the MVP of All Agents!! Thanks Diane!

We hired Sara for Criminal Defense Representation in US district Court. She was excellent, detailed, thorough, forceful and effective. She attempted to settle the matter pre-trial, and failing that, argued successfully for acquittal. I would recommend her.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
