I've had the experience of using multiple immigration lawyers in the last few months. Joel was BY FAR the most efficient, honest, and effective I've encountered. I recommend him to anyone looking to be properly taken care of in the quickest and most cost efficient manner. I'd give 10 stars but Joel will have to settle for 5 😁

I hired Frank Kosir.jr unfortunately for a dispute with CSX railroad unfortunately. All this man did is take my money with no action. I paid for a complete deed search and after he completed it, I was told I have no rights to cross the railroad tracks. I took maters into my own hands and did a deed search on my own and found all my rights that he said I did not have. I do not understand how I was able to find all my rights with no experience in this field after paying this firm. He wasted over 7 months of my time with no action. I was charged thousands of dollars with no action. I feel this man is corrupt, be careful

I had a very bad experience with this low office. I dealt with Patrick Collins. He didn’t act as my lawyer, but he acted like my enemy. I had an issue with the department of labor and they were much nicer to talk to them and deal with them then talking to my lawyer, who is supposed to be my friend and my defendant. He was always accusing me with bad words and not trying to explain anything but putting the blame on me on everything .he has a very bad many I felt I’m at the courthouse and he is the judge not my lawyer and then he stepped out the case and he asked for a few thousand dollars for doing nothing, I do not recommend this lawyer to anyone not even for the minor case. It was the worst experience I had in my entire life. Eventually I solved my problem very peacefully on my own with the Department Of Labor staff. It was much easier and cheaper and stress free without lawyer Collins.

Horriblle Lawyer, I paid her at $1500 retainer fee. We talked for five minutes. I was never charged and she robbed me of my money so now I’m taking it to civil court. Also, before you try to purchase this lawyer, since I didn’t know, I think it’s fair that you know that that she used to work for the D.A…. She’s trying to tell me that she spent hours on the phone with troopers which is 100% a lie. My car was impounded and I’m the one who hunted the troopers down every day to make sure that I got my car back. I promise you if you were looking for a lawyer, choose anyone but this one

Spoke with her on Thursday last week. She had me send all information about the case. Scheduled an intake for today. I emailed this morning confirming the intake and I received a voicemail saying they weren’t taking new clients??? If that was the case why tell me last week we would have a conference call today? Makes no sense. Avoid wasting your time.

In my personal opinion this lawyer will sell his own mother up the river if he can make a buck out of it. In 2019 I was charged with a crime outside the jurisdiction of Pennsylvania, but Mr. Dowdle advised me it was in my best interest to take a plea knowing that a case with the same fact pattern was being decided in the state supreme Court. When I found that that the case law was in my favor it was already too late (pcra) and Dowdle said he did everything he could except push the case law. I had to file ineffective counsel against him and use his own words against him in court, then for some reason he airs out my father's medical problems in the middle of court, for what? Why? What does that have to do with this? In the end the courts legal gymnastics won out and I got timebarred again. I had a stack of things I could file against him but it's a shame I had to play my own lawyer. I feel like he traded me to the prison system and a lot of other people feel that way too, they just don't know how to write reviews online. Before anyone hires him ask him what's Thug law?

I’m a ten year milkman in three different states. I hired Eric to fight a speeding ticket. I found his tactics in pursuing this issue to be lackluster to say the least. His professionalism was non existent as he halfway greeted me in the courthouse. He didn’t call me prior to review my case which was the first bad sign. I have a clean license and it should have stayed that way. I do not recommend this lawyer at all, go another way!!

Lee Ruslander is an EXTREMELY GREAT lawyer. The way he presents himself in the courtroom is great and his cross examination skills are top notch. He intimidates law enforcement officers on the stand testifying and the District Attorney will completely hesitate to put a witness on the stand with Lee Ruslander in the courtroom. Lee gets the entire courtroom quiet and confused and the District Attorney won't even know what he's even doing. Great lawyer. He's your man if you need a good lawyer. If your in some deep trouble call Lee.

Basically a menu that doesn't offer any real help in finding legal representation. If you're facing civil matters you're referred to your county legal network but if it's a criminal matter then you're stuck with a crappy appointed lawyer that gets paid by the county so of course they are more concerned with getting paid by your fines rather than helping you.

Steven went above and beyond our expectations as a lawyer. We hired him after our lawyer said there wasn’t anything that could be done for my husband, who was currently incarcerated serving on his sentence. So we took a chance when hiring Steven, but he came so strongly recommended by others, that we had to. Within two weeks of doing so, Steven was able to get my husband released from jail and serve remaining sentence on house arrest!!! We will never use anyone again!!!

She advertises herself as Special Education Law Group. We signed a contract with her to force the school district to provide an IEP to my special needs child. I was so optimistic to have my child’s case reviewed because I knew how poorly the district was handling my child’s education and special needs. Unfortunately I found engaging with this law firm to be excessively expensive while receiving little to no actual guidance. I was left dealing with the school district for months with no real strategy to achieve my goal. The district ended up receiving a lot of good advice from this firm on how to correct their errors and it was on my dime while I was left looking like a fool. This firm actually drafted and sent a proposal to the district for tuition expenses towards a school my child couldn’t get in to! Because there was no sensible strategy and my case was delayed again and again I constantly had to reach out to the firm and was charged a ridiculous rate for communications. No decent lawyer will over charge for advising a client on what should be their field of expertise. Bad experience, I would not recommend this firm unless you are well versed in special education law yourself otherwise you will be taken for a ride and your child ends up suffering.

This lawyer is the worst I hired this woman to handle my divorce 3 years ago. She told me I could be divorced in 6 months because neither party was contesting. It's been 3years. she doesn't return calls, she doesn't respond to emails and then deleted the email I was given. I had to act as a FBI agent to find a new email and she hasn't responded to that. My wife's lawyer tried contacting her because she ended up filing for the divorce and she hasn't responded to that. I'm trying to hire and new lawyer and I find out that she has to take herself off the case before any other lawyer can take over. Only thing I can think is that she took my money and it paid for something for her and her electorial Judge Sherman Toppins wedding. I would never recommend her and I'm sorry I would never vote for her husband. I could only guess birds of a feather flock together or fall in love with each other.

I was referred to this attorney by my SSI attorney. This law firm is very condescending to its clients. They do not return calls (attorney or paralegal), they do not follow up, and when I had to hear from the local SSI office that my paralegal was supposed to call me and never did was the final straw. While I did hire him, I immediately regretted it because he was very judgmental upon our initial consultation. For the reputation they have alleged to build, they do not value the commodity that is their client base.

Judicial ethics opinions should be public. Redact names if you must, but advisory opinions on what PA judges should or should not be doing should be public info available to everyone. Your complete lack of transparency does not engender trust in your corrupt court system. Then again, most judges probably will not seek out an opinion, anyway.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
