Rhonda Bartlett was my 2nd Atty through my divorce. My 1st Attorney had the case for over a year and that experience was a complete waste of time, emotions and expense. I was referred to Rhonda Bartlett by a friend Atty. After hiring Bartlett, she cut through to the meat and bones of case and did not waste any time, emotions and Expense. She kept me apprised on everything. She is honest and cares. I highly recommend her.

Ms. Hill was referred to me by a friend who is a local attorney that was unable to take our case. From the beginning, Ms. Hill was honest with us about our options and expectations. We brought our concerns to her and she listened and truly understood what we desired. I can only imagine the time she spent reading over all of our contracts and case law because she always seemed to be one step ahead of where we needed to be, even giving us a plan B and plan C in case the defendants in our case didn't respond in the correct manner. She was persistent and knowledgeable in every angle of our case. We finally reached an agreement with the second and final defendant in our case today without having to go through a lengthy and expensive arbitration. I would highly recommend Ms. Hill. She is such a talented young lawyer with a bright future.

He was extremely professional, courteous and an absolute master of his trade. He was the 3rd lawyer I had visited in regards to a Mis-C, while every one else either treated the case as trivial and tried to scre me off with huge fees and pessemistic approaches, Mr. Thibodeaux took the utmost interest and got a dismissal with a Not Guilty outcome!

Ms. Spector defended me in a case where the other party was asking for more than my insurance. She alwayys kept me informed of the case and what was happening and ended up winning the case 100% in my favor. I never was sued before and didn;t know what to expect but Ms. Spector explained everything in a way I could understand. She told me different options about how things could go and I felt like she really iunderstood the case not only as a lawyer but from my perspective and how it affected me and my business. There were a few times I could not get ahld of her on the phone when I wanted because she was in trial but she did call back even on weekends and at night and she gave me her cell phone sumber so I could call her whenever I had a question. Even though the insurance compamny is the one who paid her and she worked for I always felt like I was the most important person with the most inportant case when she was working with me

My biggest gripe about attorneys is that they at best lack customer service skills and at worst are just lazy. I've actually had issues getting some of them to accept retainer in a timely manner. I didn't have such an issue with Ron. He was very prompt in returning my first call (within 30 minutes) and after he was hired I never waited more than a few minutes if he didn't answer on my call. That being said, I was even more impressed with his knowledge of law as it pertained to my case, his obvious courthouse network, and his thoroughness in shepherding me around all of the potential pitfalls. It takes more than a big stick to be a successful attorney. One that can provide good customer service, treating everyone as a customer from the client to the folks in the system, and utilize his/her relationships is going to do very well. Arrogance destroys these traits but Ron hasn't let that affect his core values. I wish I could give more stars. I HIGHLY recommend this attorney and his firm.

Following Hurricane Harvey my wife and I were facing difficulties from a multitude of directions to include new disability, insurance adjusters underpaying, mortgage servicer derailing construction efforts and threatening foreclosure, to name a few. Before a windfall of back pay from disability left my wife and I ineligible for his pro bono work he and his firm were affording to us and our situation we were honored to have Mr Tomayo assigned to our case. I was somewhat apprehensive at first at having such a young lad holding the legal reigns of some issues that were fundamentally the totality of my wife’s and myself a life work but Mr Tomayo would soon prove to us to be a very capable advocate who provided quick, prompt, and vigorous attention and advisement with little incentive offered other than knowing personally that he was doing a good job. I found through four or five successive lawyers and firms that were to (mis)handle our case, for quite a hefty price tag (in fact to spend all of the windfall) with either zero or negative consequence results, Mr Tomayo’s advice even in comparison to some high cost legal teams consisting of a team of lawyers with a half century of experience, was the best Lawyer that money could not buy. I will be checking in from time to time on Mr Tomayo and his obvious path to great success. Mr Tomayo has found the secret that so many have missed or either lost somewhere along the way which is you must never build the base of the foundation of your success on or with money: I hope that mr Tomayo doesn’t allow the majority of his coifed brethren to corrupt or erode his values and personal conviction to offer his clients the best care available. I pray that the evils of this society and the sad desperation of which his chosen profession will no doubt introduce him to will never break his spirit to do good and to do what’s right for his clients regardless of the circumstance or financial incentives. Mr Tomayo is cut from the strongest cloth in regards to character and perseverance and we only wished we could have continued with the supers advocacy we had while in his care. Will recommend to anyone for anything and if I could afford to have him on permanent retainer (it’s not for sale) I would pay whatever price to have him back (his bill to me was zero) As I said previously he is the best attorney that money can not buy (I’ve tried) Thank you Mr Tomayo, I drink to your continued success

I had another attorney prior to Neal to deal with significant dispute as an owner in a HOA . The HOA had filed to foreclose due to fines/late fees and at that time I reached out to Neal's firm and within 24-48 hours, Neal had stepped in, communicated with the HOA sufficiently that the HOA decided to change their attorney. Neal's actions and understanding of laws in which he outlined the HOA's serious errors in taking the action they did led to a settlement with a reduction to where the HOA collected only a fraction of what their claim and removed their legal fees from the claim. He absolutely had the HOA on the run and I believe based on the HOA release had we gone to court I would have prevailed and won damages for the HOA's actions.

Alan Daughtry is the attorney we all thought we would be when we entered law school. He does what he does, above and beyond what you think is possible, guided by plain common sense and a genuine sense of humanity that seems to have escaped the modern world. He handled business issues for me that I could not even understand, as well as parts of my very messy divorce. Alan is appropriate, down-to-earth and smarter than he would probably like folks to know. His grasp of the law is certainly cerebral and has breadth, but his attention to detail towards the facts of each situation and utter kindness and care about his clients is what makes him such a superlative counselor. His docket is full and filled with people I am not cool enough to know, but if you can possibly get him to represent you in any matter, you are fortunate.

I just want to say I am so glad that another attorney referred me to Mr. Colin Guy to represent me in contesting the disposition of my late father's estate. My stepmother decided she was going to disregard my his final wishes and try to steal my inheritance. Due to the relatively low dollar amount involved, I was finding it hard to get someone to represent me. Colin listened to story, took my case, and forced her to pay me like my dad wanted. He did it because what she was doing was wrong,.not because there was alot of money in it for him if you are looking for a tough, smart, hard-nosed attorney that does not mind getting nasty if necessary, Colin is your guy.

Forrest sanderson took my case when I was down and out, and charged with it. Forrest showed up to court to support me and get more info on my case before he ever even accepted the case. I owe this man my life. I am with out words to discribe how much this man helped me. He fought for me like as if the case was connected to him personally. Forrest produced a strong case, and was in court within a week. He protected and fought for my child as if, my son was his own. Forrest is an unbelivable lawyer, and one of the best men i have ever met. I can only hope that every lawyer strives and works as hard as this man does for their clients. He does not look at you and your case as a paycheck, but as person and does everything in his power to fight for your cause. I will never be able to thank him enough.

Having been an employee of Mr. Leach for slightly more than a year at this writing I can attest to his sense of responsibility to "do the right thing" by his clients. I see it from the insiders viewpoint. (Note: He is not aware that I am writing and is not the type to give a raise due to something like this or favor me for anything I say.....so I have no financial gains or incentives to be had in writing, other than a desire to express the truth when I saw that I am given this opportunity). Over the course of a 40 year career, I have associated with hundreds of attorneys thru a former business. I'm met some very impressive attorneys and I count Mr. Leach as being an exceptional attorney amongst that number. His trial preparation is superb, I am aware that he is often consulted by other attorneys, and I personally admire and respect him for his character and high degree of integrity. If I had a legal issue that required an attorney I would hope he would take the case. Thank you for providing this forum for speaking out on what we know and believe about attorney's. A valuable service, because it is difficult to determine by looking in the phone directory or at online listings who might be trustworthy and work hard for us on our legal matters.

We highly recommend Heath Coffman. Unfortunately, it took a lot of time and money with other attorneys to see how good Heath really is. We started with a Board Certified Probate attorney that we found using this and other sites. Approaching 2 years and $40,000 out of pocket, the first attorney had done very little, even with the aid of a 7th year associate. They neglected to produce the most basic elements of a case like creating a damage model or taking a deposition. Understanding now that this was a complex case, the first attorneys floundered, wasting our time and billed us for it. Commitments, deadlines, budget, and adequate communication were inconsequential. After we fired the first attorneys, we were referred to Heath. I presented all the evidence available to the previous attorneys. In 10 days, Heath had a comprehensive grasp of our case. Weeks later, Heath was prepared to seek a Summary Judgment. This is a testament to his superior intellect and application of the law. Our experience with previous attorneys has left us disappointed. Several just did the wrong thing, filing incorrect documents or missed deadlines, leaving us no recourse. Most would not return calls for days. And the majority seemed unconcerned about the money we were spending. Our experience with Heath was very different. He focused on results, while being sensitive to billable hours. He led us away from options that made us feel better, but would cost us more money and yield results no better. Heath was compassionate, ethical, and tireless. His actions clearly communicated that he truly had our best interest at stake. I have noticed a few things about the attorneys with which we have dealt. Many believe that their knowledge of the rule of law makes them indispensible, and they act in their own best interests. To practice law, it takes more than legal knowledge; one must meet clients’ needs. To be an exceptional attorney, one must have the ability to manage time, organize concepts, run a business, be a counselor, and most of all have the intellect to separate himself from the others who merely pass the bar. Heath is clearly one of those exceptional attorneys who not only knows the law, but operates in the rarified strata of gifted litigators and compassionate counselors. Without any reservation, I strongly urge you to consider Heath Coffman for your legal needs.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
