This is our second go round with Katherine Frye as our PC. The first time Katherine was scolded by the courts for overstepping her role as a Parent Coordinator when she changed the custody schedule, wrongly taking away half of my custody. While Katherine seems very knowledgeable in her field she doesn't seem to use that knowledge very well to help dissolve conflict in high conflict situations. Katherine Frye has consistently ignored emails related to alienation of affection, domestic violence, protection orders, withholding and many other issues, and has continuous used her "power of authority" as she likes to call it, to make many bias, one sided decisions. If you are in a high conflict case, or your co-parent suffers from narcissism, do not proceed with Katherine as your PC because her directives and help can be bought, and manipulated, inevitably becoming one sided. I would have to agree with a previous review that maybe Katherine is too busy with her practice or doesn't care enough to find out the actual issue at hand, because there is no way a law professional is supposed to be this disconnected and nonchalant about major issues.

While Ms Frye may or may not be a good attorney, I would recommend someone else with a therapy background to be your family's parent coordinator. Specifically, Dr. Carolyn Pender-Roche of Next Step Psychology is exceptional. She is a therapist and understands what is in the best interest of the children. Carolyn takes into consideration the psychology of each family member as well as seeks to understand the whole situation even if it takes time. I believe from my experience with Katherine Frye that Katherine is just too busy trying to manage her legal practice to take the time to fully understand the issues at hand. If you want someone who will listen well before hurrying to give a directive, go with Dr Pender Roche or even another therapist. Ultimately having someone who can truly be an advocate for the best interest of your children is what is most important even if they dont always do what you want. If you have an ex that lies well, you dont want Katherine Frye as your PC as she is too busy to notice.

Hello! I hired Ms. Frye, Esquire to review and assist through a complex divorce, and was thoroughly impressed by her knowledge, her willingness to engage and be my advocate, guiding me through multiple particular law procedures that may have inadvertently harmed my case, had I not known about them. I thoroughly recommend her to anyone looking for a powerful advocate through the many hoops, twists, and turns that Divorce proceedings can generate. I bombarded her with questions and 'what-if' scenarios and she was more than willing to take the extra time needed, so I could be fully armed to defend myself and ensure my estate was not damaged in any way. Through her guidance, I successfully dodged pitfalls and weaknesses, and I was able to complete my goals with the divorce swiftly and cleanly. Her staff was a joy to work with and communicate throughout the experience, before, during, and after the case resolution. Prompt, efficient, and an absolute pleasure to talk to. She communicates efficiently and powerfully. I realize it's hard to trust reviews online, but trust this; you will not go wrong choosing her to be on your side! She will be my attorney for life.

Financially ruined my family and did not deliver. Did not do what she said she would do. Procrastinated with a million "the dog ate my homework" excuses. Demanded a flat fee retainer of $45,000 up front for a child custody dispute. Paid her because I was vulnerable and emotional and wanted to protect my children. Now I'm deeply in debt. Four months into the case, she had still not served a discovery request on the other party. Never went after my ex-husband for child support. She told me she was going to file a Rule 11 sanction against my ex-husband and his lawyer before I hired her. She also never did this. I finally fired her after four months of inaction on her part. When I fired her, she told me the $45,000 was gone, and I would be getting zero refund. It then took her about a month to produce billing records. What a joke. She charged me $8,575.00 for actual work and $36,300.00 for emails, texts, and phone calls. I am serious. This is the way this woman operates. And many of my communications to her were in response to her directing me to email her information for motions she never drafted. Many of our communications were me asking (begging) her to please do her job and her giving me false assurances and promises in response. When I asked for my file to give to my next lawyer, she said I was harassing her. When I said I disputed her insane billing and wanted to mediate the matter, she said I was harassing her. Before I fired her, she kept telling me we were friends. She told me I would look bad to the judge if I fired her. Hey, North Carolina: This is an attorney in good standing with the North Carolina bar? What a joke. Wish me luck with my complaint to the NC bar and lawsuit. You know how, when you enter a cockroach-infested room and turn on the light, they scurry for cover? They really hate the light of day, don't they.

This attorney charged me a $45,000 flat fee to represent me in a custody/child support case. She never filed anything pursuing child support and didn’t do what she said was going to do. I finally fired her after four months because she hadn’t even filed a discovery request on the other side. After I fired her, she refused to refund even one penny. My family is devastated. I’m a single mother of four. I will be complaining and pursuing a refund. Excessive fee and did not do what she promised. Then when I asked for refund, told me she spent $45,000 in four months of representation. She only represented me at one hearing. I’m taking this to the authorities.

I had the privilege of working with Arlaine Rockey as my attorney, and I cannot praise her enough for her outstanding support and dedication. Arlaine played a pivotal role in securing a restraining order against my abusive ex-husband and ensuring my children's safety. What truly sets Arlaine apart is her unwavering commitment to her clients, combined with her exceptional expertise in child sexual abuse cases. Given the harrowing history of sexual abuse perpetrated on my minor children, her specialized knowledge and experience in this area were absolutely crucial. With her expertise, Arlaine successfully fought for full sole custody of my son and daughter, a feat that seemed impossible at one point. She understood the gravity of the situation, especially with the history of both physical and sexual abuse, and she acted swiftly to protect my children from any harm. Unlike my previous attorney, who was ineffective in safeguarding my family's well-being, Arlaine Rockey demonstrated exceptional legal skills and genuine compassion, particularly in handling the delicate and distressing issues related to child sexual abuse. She made sure my children were no longer subjected to "therapeutic" visits with their bio father, who had caused them immeasurable pain and trauma. Thanks to Arlaine Rockey's dedication and her unparalleled expertise in child sexual abuse cases, my family and I can finally breathe easier, knowing that we are safe and protected. I wholeheartedly recommend Arlaine Rockey to anyone seeking a compassionate and skilled attorney who will go above and beyond to fight for justice and the safety of their loved ones, especially in cases involving a history of sexual abuse to minor children.

Judy, you were the angel I needed from Jesus himself. Please don’t be modest. Do not let her prestigious college degrees fool you. She does not show her privilege. The sacrifices she made and must have made over the last 31 years for humanity is unheard of. She doesn’t do it for riches but love for her fellow human. God, Jesus will reward her with many mansions, forty twenty year old virgin studs while she bathes in cash. You rocked Judy! You are the best ever. Thank you thank you thank you! You are a saint among saints. God loves you, Judy! When she speaks on morality and ethics there is no higher.

I thought I was the only one that had the experience that I did when going here. Then I spoke to someone else that just came straight out with this information without any prompting. By the time me and the other client had left her office (another man dealing with custody).......we thought she was our ex wives attourney. Basically if your a man trying to get your kids you can forget it. According to Mrs Gillespie theres nothing you can do and your ex can do whatever she wants and you might as well accept that and move on. I can tell you this is not the case with all lawyers. But again.......IF YOUR A MAN......seek council elsewhere.

REGINA IS THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS. I recently went through a separation and divorce. I desperately needed someone in my corner to fight for me and my children. I always felt like Ms. Gillespie respected me and had my family's best interest at heart. Every time I went to court with Ms. Gillespie by my side, I walked out winning a little more ground for myself and my kids-- and with a little more confidence. I wouldn't have stood a chance without her representation and my children are so grateful that she saved them from an unsafe environment. Ms. Gillespie is honest, dependable, has integrity and is extremely knowledgeable.

I am a private investigator that has worked with Len through the years on several cases. She is a driving force on behalf of her clients. She is always available whenever I have a question regarding a case or need to clarify an issue. She has pushed both myself and my staff to the limits in terms of making sure our final work product is the best it can be for her clients. She is always fully prepared for court and I am always proud to be seated behind her. Len is a driving force and I highly respect her candor, work ethic and most of all dedication to her clients.

I hired Len Mueller to assist with divorce matters and a separation agreement. Everything seemed ok at first, and she asked for relevant financial documents and started working on an agreement for distribution. I then started to notice that little progress was being made on my case, and it seemed that I couldn’t get Len’s attention unless I made an appointment to come into her office for a conference. During these conferences, she would bill me close to, or in excess of, a thousand dollars each time, and we would often rehash the same issues. I then had trouble getting her or her staff to even respond to emails, and I had no choice but to send her a message conveying my dissatisfaction with her representation, and asking her to cease work. She basically told me to come pick up my file and wished me good luck. I asked for an electronic copy of my separation agreement, as a courtesy, so I could at least complete on my own. She would not respond to the request. In sum, I paid her nearly $4500 and walked away at close to square-one. In the end, I felt that she became argumentative and unprofessional to me. A previous reviewer stated that “she will only work cases she believes in fighting” so maybe mine wasn’t one of them.

If you have a serious matter to be heard in Stokes County court, you have two real choices for effective counsel. One is expensive and crooked, and the other is Dustin Nichols. Mr. Nichols is well regarded in Danbury, a reputation that he has crafted based on honesty, integrity, and his hard work ethic. He is a straight shooter with his clients too. He wants your life to return to normal, and he works hard to make that happen. Mr. Nichols has represented my family and me in extensive criminal and civil matters. I hope I never have need of his professional services again, but if I ever have to go back to court in Danbury, I'm calling this guy. Thank you Dustin (and Beth!) for finally bringing my family some justice, may God bless you and yours. :)

Diligence, dedication, professionalism... just a few of the words I use to describe Paul, and his entire team at Hatcher Law. I have worked with Paul for 6 years and never experienced less than complete satisfaction. Paul and his team handled my divorce agreement tactfully and methodically; and managed to ensure my understanding throughout the process. Recently, he helped me to restructure the agreement as circumstances had changed over the course of 5 years. I say helped me because he ensured that I captained the ship, while he navigated. Paul truly understands the system, the law and cares about his clients and ensuring the desired outcome. I highly recommend Paul and his entire team, personally, I will not use anyone else.

This is the first negative review I've ever posted on any platform. Hiring Teresa Hier has been an absolute nightmare. I paid Teresa $5,000 to represent me while attempting to modify child custody/child support for my children. My ex and I came up with an agreement back in October 2021 and here we are in March 2022 and I am no closer then when I started this process. Teresa went 23 days without even responding to me to provide an update. She cancelled 3 different appointments to further delay everything. She refused to write up the agreement for my ex and I. To make it worse, she will not cancel our motion therefore we can't move on with our lives.

First of all, I would like to make clear that we did not chose to work with Ms. Nance at Bagwell Holt Smith P.A. She was chosen by the buyers of our home in Durham, and we had no choice but to work with her. Upon receipt of our estimated closing documents, we informed Ms. Nance that the payoff amount was incorrect (too high). When we pointed this out, we were met with the condescending reply that we simply did not understand how to read out mortgage documents. The next day, when we presented Ms. Nance with the correct payoff amount in the form of an email with a pdf from our lender attached, we were accused of "borderline harassment" for having pointed out her careless mistake. The closing documents were corrected. Later, while we were signing closing documents, we were informed by our neighbor that there were people trespassing on our property. The timing of the trespassers seemed quite suspicious to us because the only people who knew we would not be at home were myself and my partner, our realtor, a mobile notary, and Ms. Nance's office. As we had not approved of anyone entering the property, and because we suspected that they may have been under the direction of Ms. Nance, we informed her that we were not aware of not did we approve any requests for people to come onto our property, especially as the Due Diligence period had closed. Her response was that it was the survey her office had ordered to be done during the Due Diligence period, which had been delayed, and said that he had no legal right to deny them. I am not an attorney, however I believe I would have been fully in my rights to have called the police on the trespassers onto our private property given the Due Diligence period had been closed and we were never notified that a survey was going to be done. Our final grievance with Ms. Nance concerns her preparation of our tax documents. We first received one 1099-S form from Ms. Nance's office containing only the social security number (SSN) of my partner. As we are unmarried, we file our taxes singly and so I requested that we be sent two 1099-S forms, one for myself and one for my partner. Though we never consented to electronic documents, we were emailed pdfs of our 1099-S forms however this time Ms. Nance had switched our SSNs so that my SSN was on Jason's form and vice versa. Her response was she just put them in the order they were in on another form (and didn't bother to check that they were correct). I replied asking the corms to be corrected, again, and to be mailed. We then received copies of the 1099-S forms in the mail which had our incorrect SSNs. Upon notification, Ms. Nance re-sent the pdfs of the corrected 1099-S forms. I have once again requested hard copies be mailed as we never consented to electronic delivery of these documents. While preparation of all these documents may be rote to Ms. Nance, they are extremely important to us and have significant impact on our finances. The carelessness employed by Ms. Nance throughout this process is extremely unprofessional. While everyone should be double and triple checking any document they sign, it is easy as a first time home seller to be overwhelmed with the sheer amount of paperwork that goes into selling a home. One should be able to trust that the parties preparing such important documents (and collecting payment accordingly) would have the ability to prepare them correctly and with care. I am glad that we reviewed everything carefully and am sorry for those who have unknowingly been victims of Ms. Nance's carelessness and unprofessionalism.

All paper work I signed regarding this plea only had a singular charge on it, yet later I found out I was also charged and convicted of dwlr non impaired. He will not return my phone calls and this has been years now the DA tells me he’s the only one that can fix this clerical error. No one else. This is in Jackson county. I hired Gilligan for my case, and he ensured me that he would appear for me on my court date. That day came around and he DID NOT show up and a bond was out in my name. I never even heard from him that day. I only knew this because the other person involved in my case (who hired a different lawyer) was there and told me that no one was there to represent me. After calling his firm numerous times, I couldn’t get a hold of him. Finall I heard from him and he was on his honeymoon!?!?! Why did you lie and say you would appear in court for me on that day? Why didn’t you tell me you were getting married that week? I guess he tried to do some sort of absence form that somehow didn’t make it to the court. He blamed his paralegal of course (which by the way, he went through 3 different paralegals during the time I had him retained. That speaks volumes of how he runs his business.) after that gets worked out, I complete my community service, turn in the forms to him, and I NEVER HEAR BACK FROM HIM AGAIN. After numerous follow ups, I had to contact the NC STATE BAR and tell them he abandoned my case and wouldn’t talk to me. They told me to write him a letter and see if he responds. He of course, did not. The State Bar calls him and of course he gets back to me right away with no apology that he was ignoring me for weeks. This man is rude, dishonest, uncommunicative, and unreliable. I beg you not to give him a minute of your time or cent of your money. There are much better lawyers in the area. PLEASE DONT HIRE HIM.

If you're looking to deal with staff more than the actual lawyer, this is the one for you. They are very nice people, normally answer the phone & usually get back to you in a few days. Don't expect Mrs. Arrowood to ever contact you after the initial consultation or before you go into court. No matter what the issue is, you never hear from her. I could have represented myself & done a better job. 2 years to get a divorce, haven't seen my children in almost 6 months & my ex's lawyer showed up to every hearing I went to where she didn't. I only gave her two stars because the staff does such a good job.

Ashley was a wonderful advocate for me and my children. Unfortunately, my life situation took many twists and turns and Ashley and her team were with me every step of the way. She was able to get the best possible outcome for our family and I'm extremely grateful for her foresight and guidance. She stayed on top of all the developments in my case, was always timely in her communications and gave me great peace of mind. I highly recommend her services.

Ashley seemingly has a good working knowledge of the law - as best as I can tell not being a lawyer. But in retrospect her use of it in my divorce is now something I question. It caused a lot more turmoil than necessary. Her advice lacked judgment and wisdom that probably only comes with time and experience.

I hired Ms. Dickerson to represent me in court for a traffic citation I received in Durham, NC. Ms. Dickerson was very clear up front on what her representation included and the expected outcome of my court hearing, based on my driving record. Her fee for her service was fair & reasonable. The outcome of my case exceeded my expectations, largely due to Ms. Dickerson's attention to details, as she was able to have my case dismissed due to an error made with the scheduling of my court date. I don't plan to get anymore citations, but if I'm unfortunate enough to find myself in this same situation in Durham, NC, Dickerson Law will be my first call.

The whole team at Bull and Reinhardt is great! I recently worked with attorney Anna Bowkett on a divorce case. She was always very attentive and helpful, and I really appreciated her bright, bubbly personality, her concise communication, and especially her punctuality in answering any questions I had. I felt empowered knowing she had my back. She knows her stuff. Thanks Anna!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
