Mr. Hastings is, by far, the best attorney in NC. After a long string of six attorneys and numerous consultations with attorneys in Cabarrus and Mecklenburg Counties, he is the only attorney who can handle my aggressive opposing Charlotte law firm. Like other reviews, he is the "big guns" I needed to settle my case. He is a master in his element and works his deposition like an art form to build an inpenetrable defense for the case. He has patched the holes in my case which other lawyers left open for attacks. He is assertive and speaks up in court where other attorneys sat silently and let me fall. I was cheering inside when his quick thinking and assertive performance in court sent opposers running from the stand. He has an intimidating court presence and tells you like it is but if you do everything he says and pay on time, he will not let you down. He is the most affordable attorney in the Charlotte area because he and B.J. are an efficient team. He does not nickel and dime billing or drag out unnecessary calls and emails. Other offices have several staff members answering phones and charging for the same response that they have no answers. B.J. is knowledgeable and handles the correspondence while Mr. Hastings outperfoms the opposers in court. Save your money on consultations and look no further. I've already done the groundwork here. Mr. Hastings is the weapon we both need!

Randell is the best lawyer I’ve ever seen. He has a lot of experience but also has an ability to get stuff done and quickly. He asks the right questions and knows how to get to the truth of ugly custody matters. I had a stalled out custody matter and Randell stepped in and took charge. Within weeks we were getting answers to questions that were taking years to get answered. I recommend Randell to anyone and everyone. Use his experience, his expertise and his passion. The man knows what he’s doing and how to get it done. He’s a good man too who wants truth and justice!

Mrs. Riddick and her law firm were absolutely the best possible experience I could've asked for when dealing with my divorce. She was there with me every step of the way and her paralegal was always very calm and helpful. Mrs. Riddick consistently had my file up to date and everything done way ahead of time. I cannot recommend her enough!!

Divorce is not fun, and regardless if you are a man or women its difficult to cope with our emotions. My EX(soon to be) had a temp restraining order the night before I was leaving for a annual company meeting, it was planned as a strategy between her and her Atty, we had been married my second marriage for only 18 months and had started stealing large sums of money to boot. Anyway, I called a few Atty's not being from Mooresville I was lost, also being on other side of the US the day after I was given 20 minutes to grab belongings out of my home, I was not in best mental state. They were the only firm that listened to me story and accepted a small retainer sight unseen. They have stayed in touch the last year and as I move to Colorado for business they have been wonderful to finish things on my behalf. Patricia has a great team, July especially has been great. I would highly recommend

My appt. was for 4:30 pm and I was not seen until 5:20 pm. No apology for an almost hour delay was given. Communication of some sort - so that I could have chosen to reschedule - would have been nice. Apparently my time is of no value to her. I will continue looking for a lawyer who shows some semblance of caring. I felt that she would not be a strong advocate for me.

I’m just getting around to this a year later, first thing this lady has a snappy attitude, she showed up to the custody hearing with no cross-examination questions, I looked over at her she started making up a few questions on the spot right before her time to cross exam, I said to myself what in the hell. Prior to the child custody trial, I emailed her questions she could potentially ask because I knew the opposing party’s situation and they were not truthful. Throughout the entire trial she probably objected the opposing council a hand full of times. When I would look at her face, it was like a dear in the headlights, she was stuck. it was like she was afraid of the opposing council. We took a bathroom break during the custody hearing and my character witness came over to me and said you need to fire this lady, I told him, I had already paid her. During this entire experience, this attorney was extremely apathetic, she did the bare minimum, she did not put any effort into this case; really quick phone calls, did not put any time and research in the case. My child’s mom even asked me where did I get that lawyer from? This lawyer has absolutely no business in the legal field.

Mrs. Jones represented me in a CS case and she delivered what she promised. I remembered when I first interviewed her, I knew she would do a good job. However, she didn’t do a good job, she did an excellent job representing me. She responded all my emails in a timely manner, her assistant was always there with reminders and more. I worked with another lawyer before her and I learned how hard is to find a good family lawyer. Particularly those on the side of the father and I strongly recommend Jana Jones. You will not regret hiring her, she is very knowledgeable and she will have your best interest in mind when going to court. She know her way around the court and knows exactly how to address toughest judges. Bottom line…. She is really good One more thing and most important… when it comes to legal services… she is fair when it comes to her fees. You will not have any billing surprises, if you used legal services before you would know what I am talking about it. She is there to do the job, not to get your money.

Was consulting with them about a matter I was wronged in. And was continually cut off and brushed off. They don't work they don't listen! As I'm now seeing this is the same complaint in many other reviews. I was just yelled at by an attorney because I was asking questions. Find another law firm! Trust me I've dealt with many attorneys this is not the one you want to do business with. Have tried to work with multiple lawyers in this firm. They all give the same nonchalant vibe!

I was given info on LegalShield through a representative who came to my job. I signed up and had a matter that I needed legal assistance with. I called and spoke with an attorney who was extremely unprofessional, he kept cutting across me, jumped to conclusions and offered me no options to help resolve the matter, stated that the representative who spoke to the employees lied and gave misinformation, was NOT empathetic to my situation, very cold and lacked decorum. I called back to report it to a customer service representative and she never apologized for my bad experience or encounter, she too was non empathetic. This law firm has individuals who lack social and emotional awareness for people who call and are just trying to get some direction and insight. And even if you can't help, it's a way to do and say things. From the other reviews I'm seeing, I'm not shocked at the experience I had today. LegalShield certainly needs other attorney options for NC!

Do not initiate any business with this woman. She did get my divorce completed, albiet, very, very overpriced. I was accosted by her in the courthouse recently when trying to obtain a copy of my divorce decree. She overheard me giving them the necessary information to get my records and she very aggressively approached me. First, she very unprofessionally yelled at me across the room in front of many people asking what my name is and I tried to ignore her. I did not know at first who she was. She was very persistent and wouldn't leave me alone. She said she is Bonnie Rossi and I told her she was my attorney and handled my divorce. She said she needed me before even asking my name so that was extremely confusing. She came up to me and almost grabbed me and I had to stop her by stepping back and she asked me again what my name is. I told her I would be happy to tell her after I was done with my business. She startled my Dad as the way she approached me, he thought I had done something to hurt her. She waited the entire time. I was unable to talk to her and she said she needed me. She said she would call me and never did so I still don't know what is going on. All she told me is she had something going on that she needed me, but that was before my name was revealed. After leaving the courthouse I made a statement to my Dad that she is in the wrong field if she thinks her name would never be mentioned in a courthouse. The way she aggressively approached me, caused me to go home and cry for hours as I now suffer from extreme recent trauma and cognitive issues as I tried to explain to her at the courthouse. AVOID HER SERVICES AT ALL COSTS!!! This experience was not worth what I just went through....

Have you ever felt like your back was against the wall? Stuck between a rock and a hard place? Look no further than to Bonnie E. Rossi! She was a lifesaver, and the life she saved was my daughter's. I discovered serious problems at my daughter's father's home that included neglect and various types of abuse toward her. I knew I needed professional help to get my daughter out of there quickly and away from all the negativity going on. I have almost no experience or knowledge about lawyers and the laws in general concerning custody of children, so I had many questions and was nervous. Between Bonnie and her paralegal Danielle, our fears were immediately put to rest. They were thoughtful, caring, and always quick to respond to my questions . They treated me and my husband with respect and dignity and basically gave my teen daughter a voice. They always validated our concerns and made us feel like we mattered. Straight to the point in general and easy to talk to. She knew what to do and how to do it quickly with minimal stress on everyone, especially my daughter. She even spoke with my daughter one-on-one and explained things in ways she would understand. We knew we had chosen the right attorney when we were given custody of my little girl and within a reasonable amount of time no less! We'd recommend Bonnie to anyone needing an aggressive attorney who cares and gets the job DONE!

Ms Thompson is supposed to be defending my son in a drug charge, where drugs were planted in my son's vehicle by local police. This was recorded on the policeman's body cam. This attorney was recommended by a friend in my divorce and found him to be arrogant, unprofessional, and lazy. He was paid in a lump sum 10k and I did not realize attorneys do not do that in civil cases until I had to find another attorney who advised that it was unprofessional on his part. Once Hamm got his lump sum, he was difficult to contact and more unprofessional in dealing with. He tried to charge me for my file which according to another attorney was illegal. Hamm wanted to do the bear minimum in my case and when he did not get what he wanted immediately wanted to withdraw as counsel as he got his money....horrible experience n wouldn't recommend to my now ex-wife.

I haven’t ever written a review on anything or anyone in my life. Mr. Ceruzzi deserves to have some light she’d on the caliber of individual he is. My children were abducted, and removed from the state. This was the result of a highly contentious divorce, spanning over 3 states, foreign custody orders, and enough drama to require weeks for trial prep. I hired Mr. Ceruzzi on a Friday, he represented me on a Monday! He took the time to hear me out, and he’s the first of 4 lawyers in this process that truly cared. He never mentioned the bias towards men getting custody of children, never uttered one negative outlook on the case, and that’s not a common trait these days. Mr. Ceruzzi placed my daughters well being above other cases that were more pressing I’m sure! Mr. Ceruzzi is the reason I have full custody of my daughters. He’s the reason they have their own beds to sleep in. He’s the reason I wasn’t forced out of my daughter’s lives. Words can’t describe how much the acts this man did for my family meant to me. If you want someone who identifies and is just as passionate as you are about the case at hand... I’d say there is no better option than Mr. Ceruzzi.

Leo was great with my custody dispute. I had a lot of questions at the start and he was always available to answer them. One of the main reasons I selected him was for his experience and it really paid off. He was on top of things and was obviously familiar with the whole process and courtroom environment. What impressed me most was how he framed questions and was able to cut through my ex's smoke-screens to get to the heart of the matters at hand. He's no novice. Couldn't be happier with him and the outcome of my case.

One week before our court date he wanted me to make a phone that he should have done. The day of court 9:00 am he didn't show up until close to 11:00 am. When he did come in his friend said something to him then called in his room and yelled, yelled at me in front of the people in the hallway..... very unprofessional. This attorney is by far the laziest and most unprofessional attorney I have ever dealt with. My now husband hired her to help him through a divorce over two years ago, while he was deployed. My husband has been in the military for over 18 years, he is a combat veteran and currently works for the government. He reached out to her while he was deployed, asking for her assistance in a divorce, expecting, as we all do, support and for her to have his best interest in mind. She definitely did not. She in no way shape or form helped him in his divorce in any positive manner. She advised him to agree to terms that are completely baffling! He actually was left to pay more than he even makes to an ex-wife where they have no children or any obligations. I would definitely keep searching for a better representative that will have your best interests in mind!

Mr. McAvoy contacted my son who had hired him almost one year ago on a Sunday night at 6:00 pm to let us know that we had to be in Superior Court the next day or my son would have a warrant out for his arrest. Of note, we live 6 hours away in Charlotte, NC. My son and I left after throwing one outfit in the car, only to find out that our case would not be heard today, but most likely tomorrow! We did meet with Mr. McAvoy on Monday and this was our first encounter with him. He didn't remember our names and that we had traveled a long way for Court. He had to keep asking where we were from. My son and I e-mailed important information that would have been very prudent for my son's case and he didn't "HAVE TIME" to print it out. My son and I had it printed at yet another hotel. He failed to even present this important information to the Judge. My son's case did get dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor which was great, but the Judge decided to make him do a drug test which my son had earlier told the Judge that he would fail a drug test for marijuana, because he had only quit 20 days ago, but the judge did drug test my son which he wasn't arrested for - and it was positive for marijuana and cocaine. My son does not do cocaine and we pleaded for a second test, but they would not do it. My son's court costs were $1,000 where others were $100-$200. My son is also now serving 30 days in jail in Dare County. We also told Mr. McAvoy that we had recently lost my son's father and my husband and I needed Zac at home. But to no avail. I think this attorney was way more interested in being on the Town Council than helping my son. I would never recommend him.

Hard to believe Rik does not have prior reviews. Rik, hands down, was the best lawyer I had during my 2 year hellish divorce. He far surpassed my three prior lawyers in just sear will and effort. By the time I met Rik I was so jaded and fatigued by the process: no results yet high fees. Rik was different. Receiving emails and texts at night or during the weekend was the norm. I appreciated his hard work and burning the midnight oil for my cause. In contrast one of my prior lawyers would never return emails and I could only contact her by scheduling a phone appointment with her during her regular business hours. What a difference. Rik may not have the fancy downtown Raleigh office address or marble floors but he has what's most important: Compassion, empathy and personal drive. I highly recommend you at least consult with him prior to hiring any other lawyer.

They were always quick to call back if they did not answer the phone. I felt completely comfortable through the whole case. Being that laws are different in Arkansas than North Carolina they made sure they were very clear on how everything happens there, and were able to successfully help me with my case.

No I would not hire this attorney ever again. He was paid in full and took years to get in a courtroom. If I dare call him after he was paid he would never return calls or rarely if I did get him on the phone he would scream at me about he had other clients. This was years back but I remember how I was treated.

I needed a good attorney to handle my child support case, since it was coming from another state, and a few complicated matters going on. I was told that Lassiter would not begin to work my case until I paid him in full, and I paid him in full earlier this yr. He made 0 calls to the other state to find out about a final hearing, which actually delayed some info. needed for a hearing in NC, in addition, he hardly returned my calls and I had to drive with a fever once to his office, to be treated unfair. I did receive court dates and never papers in the mail from the law firm for the past 7 mos. showing updates on my case, I had to drive in person to the local courthouse to get papers needed about my case, In addition, his secretary-paralegal is extremely rude and even border line control of emails. I have been displeased with the level of service I have received, and my ex husband had plenty of time to get a good lawyer during the longevity of my entire case, which has put me behind in my bills. Please try to find another family law attorney,

I selected this firm due to the very cheerful and professional receptionist that answered the phone. The receptionist was very educated and knowledge on the legal topic I was looking for a lawyer for. After selected this firm the communication was very one sided and I had keep calling them for calls I was suppose to get follow ups on and never once actually talked with the lawyer. Also my divorce papers showed the wrong location for marriage and was brushed off like no big deal but still no follow up calls throughout this whole process. I was going to use them for another legal matter but I am big on communication and this firm this not fit that requirement for me.

I reached out to Attorney Rachel Gunther’s office for a consultation appointment regarding real estate property between my ex fiancé and I. I was informed the price I paid that I had the appointment we talked she’s really nice, very positive, and she said she could help me. I was in a bad situation. Attorney Gunther was going to charge me to mail a letter to my ex fiancé which was fine. I just needed to be out of the residence. She advised me to call her office to let her paralegal know when I was out, ready for her to mail the letter, along with the amount of money I wanted and I could pay the amount she charged to prepare the letter and everything would be good. I wasn’t able to move out that weekend, so I reached out to her paralegal via email which I had done before and had received responses back in the past. I sent an email November 14, 2022 it’s now November 29, 2022 and I haven’t heard from Attorney Gunther’s office yet. Now that was a consultation that I paid $200.00 for that we talked maybe 30 minutes. If she couldn’t or didn’t want to help me that’s fine. I’m so okay with that, but the PROFESSIONAL thing to do would be to have your paralegal send an email… she didn’t even have to call me. I would’ve been okay with an email response, but at least RESPOND! I think I paid for that much. But to not do anything, no response, is rude, disrespectful and very disappointing. It wouldn’t have cost her paralegal or anyone in that office to practice good customer service skills.

I found Ms. Gunther on the internet and attempted to make an appt. after seeing that she offered free consultations. When I called, however, I was told that it was not free but there was a $150 fee that would be applied to retaining her services. When I arrived, I waited for approximately 45 mins after my scheduled appt. to be seen and was then told that she was unable to help me at all. I told her that I was on disability and food stamps but she still took my $150 anyway.

Advised me to file a lawsuit but did not provide any information as to what would happen. I had to file for dismissal to protect my children from further emotional damage that would caused from the lawsuit. He failed to inform me as his client of all possibilities . He charged me $1970 just to file papers that contained misspelling and incorrect information. We never went to court. He only wants your money.

Mr. Johnson worked hard to get me what I deserved in my divorce. My ex tried to take almost everything from me and was very uncooperative. My attorney was always willing to offer advice concerning situations as I navigated the divorce. Overall I am very grateful to Mr. Johnson for the work he did and the one thing I have against his office is that it was usually difficult to get ahold of them.

The first time I worked with Laura was on a prenup and gave substantial time yet I didn't get it until the NIGHT before my wedding after pushing to get it. I always got a voicemail and it was frustrating. That was 2.5 years ago. My husband had a revision done as we are closing on a house and I need her to go over it with me (shouldn't take more than thirty minutes). I have been trying to get someone in her office and have even emailed her, for a week now with absolutely no call back...none. I am going to need a copy of my prenup before I can attain another lawyer and I have no idea if anyone will ever call me back.

Incredibly hard to reach. Emailed and called for months with no response. I had to do all the work and she repeatedly dropped the ball, until finally I basically lost my case because of her. She never even sent a finalized document after the case was over, or a bill. I'm sad to write this, but I gave her MONTHS and months to make things right and never did.

I was referred through a DV agency. I was barely employed and afraid that I would lose my children. Laura at the time was near the end of her pregnancy so the Irwins worked on my case as a team. They I felt were very compassionate and professional. Because is was a smart thing for me to leave the marital home, I and my children were in a shelter program. Which helped me to stand on my own two feet financially. The Irwins billed me without complaints and never slacked because I could not pay at the time. I was so appreciative that I understated what I could pay one month so as to surprise them with a complete pay off that same month. I knew that they deserved every penny and more. It was the best investment I ever made. There were even returns on that investment as Laura gave me legal advice and guidance unsolicited. I was both humbled and empowered by the thought that she actually cared about me and my family. Something you do not always get from a lawyer. My family is now a success story to which I cast the Irwins in as a major part. Today I own my home, have one child in college, the other getting top grades in h.s. and I work with families in need hoping to make good on the Irwins investment in me. This firm helped me at a pivotal point in my life and were nothing but caring, professional, knowledgeable and kind. I will forever be thankful.

Wayne Clontz did an exceptional job with my case. I did pro-se work on my trial and had a legal aid advocate that quit at the last minute. So with a weeks time and the clock ticking Wayne came to my defense and did not make me pay him upfront before going to trial. I may not get full custody like I want but I KNOW whos going to keep getting paid until he gets paid in full. He did a great job for me and it would only be the righy thing to do to pay him in full. Thanks Wayne.. Whether I win or not you gave it your all. Davida.

I went in for a simple divorce and the office secretary's kept giving me the run around and telling me differently from what the lawyer told me! He was bad to not return calls. After 4-5 months my divorce is still not finalized in which he said it'd be done in 2 months at the most! I will NEVER use this attorney and I HIGHLY recommend that no one else does unless they're not in any hurry and they want to deal with unprofessionals.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
