This lawyer charges a flat fee. He gets paid every so many months. Weather he does any work or not. I used him in my divorce case until I had to let him go. We agreed verbally in court on a divorce agreement. After six months of this lawyer putting minimal effort into getting this matter settled. I ran out of money and had to go to court myself.

Jack was my Divorce attorney for my Newark Ohio case. Jack did a outstanding job for me to ensure my questions were answered and exceeded my expectations. He got the case done much sooner than I thought. He was informational. He was personal and friendly. He made a difficult situation smoother and more clear for me. I especially liked how he provided clarification and education regarding legal requirements and the court process . I would highly recommend him for any domestic issues.

I was a client of this attorney. He was always about the money and failed to follow up most issues with my case. He would call every Monday to update me on my case and then charge me significant amounts of money to do so. He actually charged me $140 to say "I am still working on it." He actually used comments he attributed to me on his website. Of course he made them positive which, obviously, isn't how I feel. Comments I never made

He didn't fight for me extremely laid back not on the ball if if didn't have the paperwork he definitely wouldn't have like you have to be your own lawyer he's just there. His advise outside court is good just not aggressive enough for me. His communication sucks too. I call and text him no answer and he doesn't call me back except if we are close to a trial date. My cases last trial date was in December of 2022 and I didn't get results until July 2023 of what the outcome was because of his laxadaisyness. I only found out the results by looking at the docket online he didn't inform me. I still haven't seen the actual results that the court sent to him and it is October 2023

(2years) Eric Cherry was very reasonable with billing me. I thought he was excellent in everything he did for me. I was pleased with the outcome of my case and don't believe I would have gotten the same results without Eric and the GAL I had on the case.

Absolutely THE most incompetent lawyer I've ever encountered. The most unprofessional law office I've ever encountered. Due to a family member being a vexatious litigator, I've been forced to become familiar with many aspects of civil law. Hand to God I could have represented my son better in his divorce/custody case than Kristin Brown did. Her lack of knowledge of law pales in the comparison of her unsympathetic demenaor. One would think someone working in family law would posess some compassion, that is not the case here. Specifics of my encounter are not important to leave this review, the point of a review is to let the general public know if my experience was positive or negative and if I would reccomend her. My encounter with this law office has been one of the most negative experiences of my families life and I %1000 suggest you seek representation anywhere BUT HERE.

We had to pay 300 for consultation then 5000$ after not speaking to anyone for over a month we finally called in and they forgot our case! Who does that? The cleo website they use didn’t even have our correct email after we wrote it down! No call backs we called several times the attorney never called us back now it’s been several weeks after we had to go to court house and track down our own paperwork the attorney constantly lied to us saying paperwork wasn’t in or they couldn’t find person to serve them they were waiting for court house blah blah blah. We are also filing a grievance against her with the Ohio attorney magistrate board. They are trash would not give her a dime! Still waiting on refund after weeks of being withdrawn from our case and it better be substantial because we had to to do all the work. I will be filing complaints and reviewing this business everywhere I can and with everyone I come into contact with

I have been working with Atty. Saull for going on 9 years. I never go in to court doubting her knowledge or abilities. Phone and office visits happen for updates, communication is fairly easy, and if you aren’t sure what something means, she gladly informs. Each time working with her, the problem is solved with the most positive outcome. I would, and do, 100% recommend Kelle.

I have recommended her to several other people; everyone who engaged her services has told me they were very impressed by her and happy with the work she did for them. I was at a turning point in my life a couple of months ago when I met Attorney Micheal Walton. My past was quickly catching up with me and a mistake I made almost 8 years ago was preventing me from living a normal life. I was scared but ready to face a bench warrant for a felony charge that I had been running from for so long. After some searching I found Attorney Walton. From our first consultation I knew that I had found the right lawyer for me. He was so understanding and compassionate and really made me feel as though he cared about the outcome of my case. Going to court was terrifying to me however Attorney Walton took the time to explain every step to in a way I understood which made me feel more comfortable. After three separate court dates Attorney Walton was able to restore my bond and eliminate my jail time in exchange for 12 months non-reporting community control. I now am able to work, drive and live a normal life without being afraid at every turn and I owe this all to my Lawyer. Thank you Attorney Micheal Walton!

*STAY AWAY!* Pamela J. MacAdams DESTROYED our lives. We are the Odetallah children (4), that were the victims of lies, with emails to prove against her deception withheld from court. Macadams vouched for an absent, neglectful, and abusive father, that influenced the judge to reallocate custody to a monster. My stay at home mother of 20 years, has been receiving NO CHILD SUPPORT. We continue to live with our mother since birth. MacAdams biased swaying of the judge has been a direct cause of: -NO CHILD SUPPORT FOR THE 4 MINOR CHILDREN -Severe health emergencies -Numerous preventable police reports from We The Children towards our father, of his physical, psychological, and emotional abuse -No food for the children -No annual glasses for 2 kids -No driver’s license -No gas -No clothing -Living with no money to repair mold

Was not able to get answers to simple questions about my case because it was impossible to get in touch with Mr. Jennings. Had to beg repeatedly for a response to emails, or phone messages, then was billed for the unanswered attempts to get in contact with the lawyer who was supposed to be representing me. I had 2 court appearances for my case in which Mr. Jennings failed to appear and was a no show. One without any notice, and one I was informed the morning of after several attempts in the days prior to get in touch with him. Was over an hour late to a scheduled appointment set up well in advance. Overall made a stressful situation worse by not being available to answer questions, or be available. Left feeling I was on my own other than paperwork that I needed filed. Not very client oriented, compassionate or understanding. Very unprofessional and very bad in responsiveness and communication.

She took it upon herself to use personal life (not pertaining to the case whatsoever) and make very inaccurate assumptions about someons life and discuss them and try to “gossip” about them with opposing attorney. Roy has been my lawyer since 1993 for myself to represent for myself and children’s case too. She’s a well advocate attorney at law for child custody case. I mean I had 50/50 shared parenting plan that didn’t work out. I had 50/50 shared parenting all my life that I knew nothing about. Good part is I need some legal help Roy. Roy had made sure i was update with my court appointment hearings with the magistrate. Roy represented my children since they both was born 2014 & 2016 and myself 1993. Roy is a strong attorney defense child custody case that never lost any cases. The courts never wants to hear what Roy district law rules have to say with the judges and magistrates so, she has to fly out represent in different state. Roy know know her rules and regulations and code of conducts very well for children. Me as the public defender attorney defense of law will be representing myself and my two minor children. The courts knew Roy wasn’t playing about children health and whereabouts and miscommunication. Roy express to the courts and the lias how my two minor children done travel the country mulp. times and was getting beating and bruise and the Franklin county courts didn’t care about my kids safety. Roy know I’m not about to loose custody of my minor children and their health and sleeping disorder and not given my children the proper education action and medication. Roy will make sure the courts give me back all my money the right way. Yes I would hire Roy for divorce court and family law. I’m not married I’m just saying she’s a good divorce attorney and family law attorney. I would recommend Roy for family attorney than anyone else in the city of columbus.

I have worked with Cindy a couple times in two to three divorce/domestic situations. She has always communicated well with me and a true advocate! Great personality and she strikes fear in opposing counsel. She knows everyone from the clerks, attorneys, judges, magistrates due to her practicing for decades in the same county. Everyone else I have referred to her has had tremendous success in their divorce or child custody matters. Flat fees.. she doesn't milk you for every dime you have and blame it on "billable hours" like most attorneys. Nobody is perfect but I know my ex-wife hates the sound of her name and all I have to do if we have any issues with our shared parenting decree is say "Maybe I need to give Cindy a call" and things tend to work out.

Ruggles Law Office did an outstanding job providing counsel and managing the details of my father's estate. The law firm created the legal documents needed to simplify matters prior to my father's passing, then provided outstanding service managing though the process after his passing. The law firm provided sound guidance and counsel, kept the lines of communication open and me informed, and managed well the real-estate matters and a few items that needed Probate Court approval and orders. I called to ask a simple question he was the one doing all the questioning was very rude to me said my problem is I don’t think I should have to pay for anything even though I don’t feel I should have to pay for a question. I asked for his name and he hung up on me. It is no wonder they have such little stars for the reviews. If I am going to pay for an attorney again you best believe that they are going to be the ones who deserve the money. Update: To the responder The conversation was completely different then described. I did not say others refused to answer my question. I said that they told me i had to contact an attorney in the area that my divorce took place. No i do not feel it is right to make someone pay to get a simple question answered after already paying thousands of dollars for a divorce. I was only told that you did not have time to continue the conversation AFTER i made the comment that all the questions you had been asking was taking longer then me getting the answer to mine. so time was clearly not the issue. I do not write reviews to get back at someone. I write reviews when i feel the unprofessional or professional behavior deserves recognition and in this case your unprofessionalism deserves just that. Tone is about 90% of a conversation. I will not say mine was perfect but as you are the business and i am not you should have been less rude and if not willing to help apologizing for an inconvenience and maybe recommending me to someone or at least telling me details of what it would take to have this question answered through your company.

David Smith is a horrible attorney. David Smith allowed a whole adjudication to take place without coming out in the lobby and retrieving me when I was 5min late. A motion to change temporary custody was filed by this attorney and was granted into an order but somehow got reversed and a hearing was held on this matter in which I was never informed. Another hearing was held after these hearings and again I was told it was between the agency and attorneys. This man failed to properly file evidence that would’ve got my children home in a CPS case. That evidence was held from March and not filed until July but when he did file the evidence he gave it straight to the agency in a discovery response when they never asked for a discovery. Ironically he filed a motion to terminate CPS involvement and to get my kids back that same day he filed the discovery response with the evidence attached (only the cover sheet made the official record). Had he filed the evidence (an affidavit, objections and then actual evidence to support those documents) in support of that motion it would’ve been granted. He failed to allow me to make the record. This attorney was granted a withdrawal after I gave him documents to file in which he chickened out. He never answered a single phone call, he never responded to important questions via email, he simply ignored me during the most crucial moments of the case.

She is affordable compared to other firms, however, this does not compromise the quality of her representation. She offers clients the ability to make payments if you can't afford the total cost upfront. She has met me locally because Lakewood was too far for me. I hired this poor excuse of an attorney last October and it has been the biggest mistake of my life! I met with her and did the free consultation which she assured me that she would be of much assistance. The first hearing she sent another lawyer in her place which in turn prompt a continuance. The next hearing was scheduled two months later; she sent a letter out stating that she would be on maturity leave and will return to work 2 weeks after she had her baby. I called her phone two weeks prior to the hearing and no answer.....FOR THE WHOLE TWO WEEKS. So I contact her "replacement" and she tells me there's nothing she can do for me and that she will try to get in contact with her. Needless to say it never happened and I went to court attorney-less which PISSED the magistrate off!!!!! I found out she never file motions or contacted the appropriate people she claimed she had and it just left me in a very bad situation. Please, if you are reading this do not hire this scam artist.

Had Holly for my parent’s case a few years ago. I was 14 at the time and completely able to choose on my own. Her tone was anything but compassionate and would threaten me with choosing a parent on her own if I didn’t speak with her. While I understand this, I was an emotional teenager going through something traumatic and she did not try to comfort me once in this process. Did not listen to my brother and I in the slightest when it came to what we want, and ultimately gave custody to the parent that we did not want chosen. She purely cares about getting paid and does not care about the children she deals with. Awful. Please do not choose this woman for any case you may have.

Attorney Davies is a concerned listener who, upon meeting, gives you the sense that she cares about your situation personally and will do whatever it takes to see it through to the best possible outcome. She is willing to walk her client through the difficult months of the legal battle yet holds no punches when a hard look in the mirror is fitting. She treats you with dignity while helping you find focus and stay calm during the difficult times, offering helpful insight to those unschooled in legal matters. Toward the end of the proceedings I realized she had led me to become more objective about myself and my circumstances, enabling me to close the door and move on. She is a thoughtful and compassionate lawyer. Due to her experience and knowledge in matters of law she is able to rapidly deduce information, sift through the irrelevant, and make the best decision on behalf of her client. She is a no nonsense lawyer who knows how to get the job done, fully capable of damage control.

We retained Ms. Clark for a custody matter and once we paid the $5000 retainer, which we never received a contract or receipt for, she almost completely quit answering messages or calls. Ms. Clark promised to immediately file custody papers, and both times she failed to do so as promised. Then, when the issue cam before the magistrate, James Palmquist instead of Ms. Clark appeared at the hearing. Mr. Palmquist, obviously unprepared, bullied our daughter into signing an agreement that even the magistrate seemed to question, and which has caused complete chaos. When we fired them, they refunded about $1800, but they kept over $3200, for which we have yet to receive an expense breakdown nearly 2 months later. We have retained new counsel who are now burdened with trying to undo the mess the Palmquist's firm has created. We intend to pursue this with the Ohio Bar Association and are considering other action.

She will tell you the right things at your consultation and get you to hire her. But once you do there is absolutely no effort what so ever put in by Gina to do anything. You truly would be better off just fighting your case yourself. I've had several of lawyers in my lifetime and Gina gets the award of worst lawyer ever.

If you require an attorney who doesn’t care about you or the outcome of your case, Gina is the attorney for you!! How she was voted ‘Best Attorney in Sandusky’ 3 years in a row is beyond me. She is clearly only in it for the paycheck. I filed for divorce in May of 2023 and am still waiting for it to get finalized. I waited around all summer for her to do something and the only things that were accomplished were 2 temporary orders. And those were only established because of my ex’s attorney so he could get visitation or more time with our children. Gina couldn’t even get a temporary child support order established for me. She let my ex’s attorney (who had only been an attorney for 6 months at the time) walk all over her. We never even had a 4-way meeting to try to settle everything. What a joke! Before our second temporary order was established, I made it very clear to Gina that I would never agree to give my ex every weekend during the school year (which is what he was asking for), as that is the only quality time my family and I get with my children. I don’t even think that she relayed that to the magistrate because the order that he proposed was completely asinine and I ended up having to give up part of my weekends to my ex. I was never in the room when she spoke to the magistrate and my ex’s attorney, so I just had to blindly trust that she was advocating for me the way I needed her to, but something about her just made me feel very uneasy and I always had this horrible gut feeling that she wasn’t really fighting for me. Her communication is subpar as well. I would send email after email and they would all go unanswered for weeks. I would call her office after not hearing from her for weeks on end, only to get attitude from her assistant. I also made it very clear to Gina that this entire process and her communication was very unnerving for me, yet she did nothing but tell me what I wanted to hear with no follow-through. I finally decided to hire a new attorney at the beginning of December 2023, which most can imagine how frustrating that is since I had to pay another retainer, but it was necessary. After hiring this new attorney, I decided to look at Gina’s reviews online and that’s when I realized there were several others that had the same experience with Gina, and also decided to get rid of her and hire a new attorney halfway through their case. Do not hire her. She does not care about anybody but herself. She will drag out the entire process for you and drain you financially. She should be disbarred!!

Highly do NOT recommend Gina for any services. She did not have the time to dedicate to my case and I’m sure many others as I have started to hear this is common with her. Many emails and phone calls would go unreturned. When we did speak about my case it was as if she had zero knowledge of the details we previously spoke about. Her turn around time on documents is unacceptable as it would take her weeks to over a month to send documents to me for approval. She is not honest about her timeline with paperwork. She wants to make it sound like her/her staff will start working on your paperwork right away and you’ll have paperwork in a couple weeks, clearly not the case. I ended up firing her and retaining another attorney. Save your time and money.

I do not recommend this lawyer in any type of a custody case! I hired him to do a job and he changed it without my knowledge or consultation till the last minute is sitting in front of the Magistrate! And then wanted to Bill me outrageous amounts of money for something that I paid him to do and he did not do!

Talked to Lynanne about case, set up info on payment date etc., when it was time to pay and get ready for case, she no longer returned calls or emails. Very unprofessional with communicating back, but very nice on consultation call. I'm just happy I realized she is too busy before I hired her,. It was very upsetting to go back to researching attorneys at the last minute.

Lynanne wolf was kind and approachable. On our initial consultation she gave me a lot of time over the phone and gave me a lot of good information. Hower, I hired her early January for a case in February. At the first meeting in early January she told me she would put in a few motions and send me a copy via email. I know attorneys are very busy so I did not call her again until the end of January to ask her about the motions which I still had not received. It was a Friday and she informed me she would do it that weekend Monday or Tuesday by the latest. Wednesday that week (two weeks before court) I called because I still had not received them. She never called back. I called her her again Friday and she never called back. Monday (the week of court) I emailed her and called her no response. Tuesday I called again letting her know I had not seen the motions or herd from her and was starting to worrie, still no response. I called another lawer who told me they could be in court on Thursday. On Wednesday (the day before court) I called to leave yet another message only this time letting her go. Big surprise she answered with no explanation of why she had not returned my calls only an excuse that she had not filed my motions because she did not have access to the others parties address (they had asked that it be private). If that was the case she could have reterned one email or phone call saying that. Well my other lawer was not only ready to go on short notice but was able to get an adress because when filing a custody modification the other person has to have access to your address unless there is a compelling reason. I had never bothered this lady (the child's paternal grandma) so there was no reason. This is information I feel like Lynanne should have known and shared with me if it was her true reason for not filing. Also I was told this is somthing she could have worked around.

I was desperately in need of an attorney so I decided to call of Slater and Zurz. I wish I had never called because Jeffery Hawkins lost my case which should have been easy to win. He never defended me and gave into easily to other attorneys. He never fought my case and I had to continuously send thesame email over and over again and got charged because he wasnt listening to what I was saying. He was more concerned about getting paid than help me and my family. My kids were in harms way and he did nothing but try to get me out the door. Always too busy to talk. Don’t do the same mistake I did. Don't let someone like him defend you and your family because you will lose the case even though I as the mother had all the evidence and we still lost because he wasn’t defending. He was rushing out the court house so he could go on vacation. He would rather talk about Taco Bell and his family than my case and my family that he is getting paid for to defend. I am writing this review to hopefully help others before it is too late.

If you are looking for someone to F*ck your case up literally look no further. Jeff here is THAT man. Poor communication at it's finest. My initial phone interview went well with Jeff. So well I scheduled a 2nd and by the end of the 2nd I hired him. He blew so much smoke up my rear about what he could do it was unreal. When it came time to actually put those words into action he failed at an epic level. He is too interested in his own custody shannanigans with his grand child to be worried about YOUR issues. Need an appeal filed? My as well file your own... I had to file my initial appeal myself. My subsequent appeal that needed filed by Jeff was filed late which in turn got my case dismissed. After case was dismissed Jeff slapped me with a bill requesting an additional $567.00. I do not feel comfortable paying for services not properly rendered.

Hawkins decided that 8 minutes before my first divorce hearing via Skype would be a good time to learn how to set up a Skype account. He failed miserably . Being 25 minutes late didn't make the magistrate very happy and he let Hawkins know it throughout the whole hearing and it showed in his ruling. He was under prepared and over matched by opposing counsel. He basically went down in a ball of flames after being smoked by my ex's attorney. His handling of paper work was pitiful rendering it usless. Needless to say he did me more harm than good and was promptly fired. Avoid Hawkins at all costs.

I wish I had done more research, felt like he was working for everyone but me. Gave no guidance, was rude at every meeting, talked down to me, did not fight for anything I wanted, only advice he gave was to end my divorce case and return to the relationship. What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
