I have to admit, after nearly 5 years of working with them and still not having my debt paid off, it feels like this process wasn't worth it. I have one remaining debt of $12K, and nearly $9K in my account that needs to be paid off. Yet, every month, it feels like the balance never gets closer to being resolved. At this point, I don’t understand why they can't call the creditor and negotiate directly. It finally dawned on me that the reason might be the high fees they charge. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend them again, and I am determined to stay out of debt just to avoid working with them in the future. On top of that, my account password never works, and I never receive the reset email. For a company taking in so much money, having a properly functioning website should be a basic expectation—it's almost laughable.

This company is a scam. There are no actual lawyers within the White Oak Law Group. They are actually involved in a class action lawsuit for falsely misrepresenting themselves.

Mrs. Braganca is an extremely professional and knowledgeable lawyer. She provided an excellent experience during a very difficult time and made sure that I was kept up to date on everything while also being very thorough in her explanations. She was not only professional but personable and provided me with some peace of mind in a hectic time. I highly recommend her.

Took over a year for an Order of Protection case. Rotating attorneys never on same page. Asking for an update confuses them. They give you a team of attorneys that dont consult with each other. You have to talk with all of them and they bill you separate. It will take days sometimes weeks for a response. They do not want to review any information you have and very unorganized.

I went to Mr. Clinton in distress when I was experiencing some issues at law school. Thankfully, I ended up just transferring to another law school and ultimately did not pursue my issues. I am still writing this review years later because I feel reviews can help people so much when selecting an attorney and my consultation with Mr. Clinton is one that really helped me to find peace. Attorney Clinton came across as a very knowledgeable and helpful person. I have interacted with many attorneys as I am one myself and I can honestly say that very few were as kind as Mr. Clinton. Oftentimes, attorneys can be snippy, but he was not. He is honest about if he can help you or not. At the same time, he remains a very sympathetic person whether he can help you or not. Rest assured, you can tell him your about your possible case and all your problems with no judgment. I also like the types of cases he worked on. I felt they were very noble causes and this was the reason I called him to begin with when I was having the issues I was having.

Paul and I have collaborated on many transactions throughout the years. In each case that we have had the opportunity to work together, I have found Paul to be incredibly knowledgeable and very responsive. Paul has a deep understanding of real estate law and knows how to protect his clients in a very practical sense, particularly in complex transactions, especially in regards to delinquent property taxes. As a real estate broker, I have referred many clients to Paul and will continue to do so.

I retained Paul for two commercial property purchases specifically to assist me, given by my own inexperience in this area. I have learned that in these transactions there is not much room for improvement in the T&C's, after the initial negotiations have transpired. It would be best if the buyer's attorney focused on saving dollars and heartaches for their client, rather than focusing on areas of the contract that are not as relevant to the transpiring of a smooth transaction. An e.g. would be to ensure that the buyer is fully aware of the property tax situation, for the portion of the purchase year, when the buyer did not own the property. In NNN leases, since the tenant reimburses the landlord, accrued property tax is not withheld on the closing statement. The property tax bill goes to the old owner (owners address in the county records does not get updated for a long time) and the old owner generally does not bother to forward it to the new owner. If you are new to commercial transactions, as the new owner you do not expect to be liable for property tax accrued prior to your ownership (especially if nobody informs you). This can results in penalties, fines, and even result in your tax debt being sold.

I hired Mr. Shahzad for my citizenship case because a friend referred me to him after a good experience and I heard he won big immigration dispute cases. My friend's hopeless case of a 10 year bar was stuck in the Montreal consulate, but Raheel fought the case with the state department and the friend arrived in the US. Unfortunately I had a couple of issues on my record preventing me from getting citizenship... but with Raheel's expert knowledge on how to overcome these tough issues, I am finally well on my way on becoming a US citizen! I was very surprised to see that others have written such negative things about him on this website and seems unfair to say the least.. Anyhow... I found him to be extremely compassionate, knowledgeable, professional & diligent in his work on my case. I have heard similar good stories from my own friend and others who were also his clients. If you have a tough case, Raheel is the attorney you need to talk to!

Though my case was very complicated, Raheel almost performed magic through my divorce case in Dupage county court. I had come from Pakistan and was seeking a way to live in the US. With a contentious divorce back home, and a minor child with me, I really had little hope for a quick resolution. But somehow he worked out a solution and I was divorced in the US too and got custody of my child. I could not ask for more.

Mr. Raheel Shahzad was hired to represent me in immigration matters by Mr.Sohail Quddussi after Sohail was paid $3,500 as my attorney to represent me in deportation matters.I did not know that Mr Sohail was not an attorney until I made a report to tha ARDC.Neither Mr. Sohail or Mr. Raheel Shahzad represent me before the Justice department after the paper work was faxed to the number they gave me from Mc.Henry County jail, after the money was paid their phone numbers went dead for two weeks then i called again the person who answered the phone said he is Raheel Shahzad and he is representing me as my attorney (never met either one of these guys) they were given to me by my brother who lives in New Jersey that they have contacts in the system and i fell for it after living here for 24 years I am afraid to return to Jamaica. Mr. Shahzad was sent some documents from my previous attorney dated 2006 and told me he could get me a bond for $30.000 do i have the money he is the best in the business , I told him I ca'not get a bond I am at the mercy of the attorney general just go in to the justice department with my documents what i have been doing for the past 24 yrs.neither one of these attorneys went to the justice department. They state they never heard that I have an attorney .Sohail sent my fiancee a receipt for the money that was deposited in TCF bank to Sohail Quddussi 12/20/2012 so until this day they took my money and i just talk to then over the phone for about two hours.I turned to the ARDC in Chicago for help but it seem i did not represent myself satisfactorily so they told me to go through arbitration or small claims court. He told the ARDC that I am a fugitive from Immigration which I was (living here all these years undocumented) and I have a child that i do not take care of (I have receipts that i have been paying child support for my son for many years) This law firm took my money and did not represent me ) I have e-mails that he sent to my fiancee that he was in front of the judge arguing for my bond (lied)I had no court date .I filed a law suite against Mr.Raheel Shahzad in the courts of Cook County and the Sherriff went on two occasions and the office is a virtual at sixty $ each plus court cost I have no money to go back to my country if these attorneys are honest they would give me my money back Raheel told the ARDC if they say give it back he would.I am hoping someone reads this and can influence these attorneys to give me my money back or help serve the summon on Mr. Raheel Shahzad to come to court to answer to my grouse and give money money back I would be grateful I need that money to help with my reintegration to my country.Twice the sheriffs went to serve their office is virtual but when the ARDC send them a letter they responded .This is the most blatant disregard I have seen that a Law Firm done to a client the thought i would i would be deported. I need to argue this case in front of the judge. Please when they got the money and I called the # the answer in different names I have the names ,I have never met these attorneys my brother who lives in New Jersey gave them to me and now he don't want to return my calls knowing I am out of immigration jail and out of $3.500, listen to me someone.Thanks.

What a Consumer Protection Lawyer Can Do for You

A consumer protection lawyer specializes in safeguarding individuals from unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent business practices. These lawyers advocate for the rights of consumers in disputes with businesses, helping clients recover damages related to fraud, defective products, false advertising, or violation of consumer protection laws. They work to enforce laws that prevent businesses from taking advantage of consumers and ensure that businesses adhere to fair practices.

Whether you’ve been the victim of a scam, sold a faulty product, or misled by false advertising, a consumer protection lawyer can help you navigate legal options and pursue justice.

When Should I Hire a Consumer Protection Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a consumer protection lawyer when you’ve encountered unfair or illegal business practices and need legal assistance to resolve the situation. Common scenarios include:

  • Fraud or deceptive business practices: If a company misled you into purchasing a product or service under false pretenses, a lawyer can help you seek compensation.
  • Defective products: If you purchased a product that was unsafe or defective and caused harm, a lawyer can help you file a product liability claim.
  • False advertising or unfair pricing: A lawyer can assist if you were misled by deceptive advertising or charged for services or products in a way that violates consumer laws.
  • Debt collection harassment: If you're being harassed by debt collectors or are facing illegal debt collection practices, a consumer protection lawyer can enforce your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  • Credit report issues: If errors on your credit report are affecting your financial standing, a lawyer can help you resolve disputes with credit reporting agencies or creditors under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
  • Predatory lending practices: If you've been subjected to unfair loan terms or practices by payday lenders or mortgage companies, a lawyer can help you challenge the loan and seek a resolution.
  • Data breaches or identity theft: If your personal information was compromised due to a company’s failure to protect your data, a lawyer can help you recover damages related to the breach.

What Does a Consumer Protection Lawyer Do?

A consumer protection lawyer provides a wide range of services to help protect consumers' rights and seek compensation for harms caused by businesses. Their role may include:

  • Filing lawsuits: Representing clients in lawsuits against businesses that have violated consumer protection laws, whether through fraud, deceptive practices, or negligence.
  • Negotiating settlements: Working with businesses or their insurers to negotiate fair compensation for damages caused by unfair practices or defective products.
  • Pursuing class action lawsuits: When a company harms multiple consumers, a lawyer can represent a group of plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit, seeking collective damages.
  • Advising on consumer rights: Helping clients understand their rights under various consumer protection laws and advising on the best course of action.
  • Handling product liability claims: Representing clients who have been injured by defective products and holding manufacturers or retailers accountable for the harm caused.
  • Defending against debt collection harassment: Enforcing the rights of consumers under the FDCPA and other laws that protect individuals from abusive or unlawful debt collection tactics.
  • Resolving credit report disputes: Helping clients correct errors on their credit reports that may be causing financial harm or affecting their creditworthiness.

How Are Consumer Protection Lawyers Paid?

Consumer protection lawyers typically use different fee structures depending on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work required. Common payment methods include:

  • Contingency fee: For many consumer protection cases, such as class actions or product liability claims, lawyers may work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win or settle the case, taking a percentage (typically between 25% and 40%) of the awarded amount.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases or ongoing legal disputes, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a contract or filing a small claim, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the necessary legal work.
  • Retainer fee: For clients needing ongoing legal assistance, some lawyers may charge a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that is billed against as the lawyer works on the case.

It’s important to discuss fees upfront with your lawyer to understand how you’ll be charged and to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Consumer Protection Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a consumer protection lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal service required. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases handled on a contingency basis, the lawyer typically takes between 25% and 40% of any settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Hourly rates for consumer protection lawyers generally range from $150 to $500, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving complex legal issues.
  • Flat fees: For specific services like contract reviews or handling a small claims case, flat fees may range from $500 to $2,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Class actions: In class action cases, fees are often paid out of the settlement or damages awarded, and individual plaintiffs usually do not have to pay upfront.

Make sure to ask for a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to avoid surprises and to understand how much you can expect to pay.

Top Questions to Ask a Consumer Protection Lawyer

Before hiring a consumer protection lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and skills to handle your case effectively. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with consumer protection law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases like yours, whether it involves product liability, fraud, or debt collection issues.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a contingency fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and what outcome you can reasonably expect.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Make sure the lawyer has experience dealing with similar legal issues, whether it’s credit report disputes, data breaches, or defective products.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While it can be difficult to predict exact timelines, the lawyer should give you a general idea of how long your case may take to resolve.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your claim.

How to Check the Credibility of a Consumer Protection Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable consumer protection lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Check for experience in consumer protection: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to confirm they specialize in consumer protection law and have handled cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle consumer protection cases.
  • Look for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the National Association of Consumer Advocates (NACA) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to protecting consumer rights.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a consumer protection lawyer, come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Details of the product or service in question: Bring any purchase receipts, warranties, or contracts related to the product or service involved in your claim.
  • Documentation of your complaint: Provide evidence of your complaint, such as email exchanges with the company, photos of a defective product, or a timeline of events related to the dispute.
  • Communication with the business or debt collector: If you’ve communicated with the business or debt collector, bring copies of letters, emails, or phone logs.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes for your case.
  • Information on damages: Be prepared to discuss any financial losses or harm you’ve suffered as a result of the unfair business practices, including medical bills, lost wages, or emotional distress.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your situation more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed with your case.
