Larry was recommended to me by a friend. Terrible choice! I hired Larry to represent me in a medical insurance denial claim case. My initial consultation went well, then a month went by with no communication. It took six days of me calling his office before he would take my call. Larry’s tone of voice was full of agitation with me for wanting to get a status update of my case. Larry gave me his email address to use for further contact. Another month went by with no communication. I emailed Larry to get another status update and within five minutes he responded and withdrew from my case saying I had a lack of trust in him and that I needed to find new representation immediately. I would not recommend Larry to my worst enemy. He wasted two months of my time and nothing got accomplished. Stay away!!!

I hired Bethanni Forbush-Moss in March 2023 to handle my custody case. I was in a desperate situation because my the abuse that has been going on with my special needs son. The initial consultation went very well and I thought that my son was going to get the justice that he deserves because the attorney before her acted like he was working for the opposing side. Like I said things started off well but then Bethanni started ignoring emails regarding what are the next steps in my case. I decided to fire Bethanni in July 2023 and I request an itemized statement and any funds returned to me that were unused. I was originally told that I would receive a statement at the end of the month but I never got the itemized statement. I sent several emails and I even came to her office. Her assistant said that she was in court so I left a message. I did not get a response! I even left voicemails on the office phone and still got no response! I am now taking the proper steps to get what I need! I would think twice about hiring Bethanni Forbush-Moss!!

Does not make decisions based upon facts or truth. 100 % bias and rigid. No support for anything but hearsay without evidence. If parties all agree to settle outside of court she will single handedly block it verses hearing and considering what is best for families. Absolute worst demeanor and lacks compassion. Only cares about winning. No place for this type of practice in family court.

ABSOLUTELY the most bias woman so called friend of the court….only because appointed by her buddy! Put down statements she said my daughter made that she did not!! Sat with my ex, a woman obviously, for 23 hrs., talked to me for 40 min after falsely accusing me of being somehow impaired “over the phone”! Looked like an idiot after I had a full sobriety test done in which the officers job was threatened for helping me! Wow, people already know. There’s a reason she couldn’t win an election. Has to depend on a buddy to appoint her. Totally unprofessional. Comes apart in court….oops.. judge to the rescue.

Goetz was appointed my mother's gaurdian attorney and couldn't have been more annoyed with this fact, especially after the judge asked him to do it a second time. Her gaurdian wants to file a motion to sell our property and the only attorney with knowledge of her sealed court cases has basically told her too bad, find someone else. I would like to revise my previous review of this attorney. He did initially did the work I needed him to do but when I received a dismissal without prejudice he assured me that this could not ever come back to haunt me. This was in April of 2018. Ever since then I have not been able to pass a background check because even the though case was dismissed it was still showing up on the computer as active and was not removed. Fast forward to March of 2019. Mr. Kevin Moser assured me that this would be taken off my record, in December of 2018, and it has not been taken off. I pleaded with him on numerous occasions to have this removed as well as another attorney asked him to do the same. He refused to answer my requests. I took the dismissal to the judges office and explained to them that I cannot work until this was removed from my record and they were very very helpful and had it removed. They further told me that all it would of taken was a 5 minute phone call from Mr. Kevin Moser and it would have gladly been removed. Instead Mr. Kevin Moser chose to ignore messages from not only me but from another attorney. Instead he chose to put me through months of hell for no reason. So...AS A WARNING ...if you case gets dismissed without prejudice then double check and make sure that it has been removed from your record to save yourself undo HELL.

With literally a days notice (though I don't recommend this!) Mr. Gangwish was able to help me enter a diversion program, called CATS. This program, which I surprisingly found informative, will lead to the dismissal of the ticket, no points on my license, and no insurance premium increases. Thank you Mr Gangwish: you certainly know what you are doing! I would not hesitate to highly recommend Mr. Gangwish based on my experience!

I used Ellie Kerstetter, I took a gamble because I was not familiar with any attorneys in Louisville. Her office is downtown, I consulted with her first, even though she came off rude I thought she knew what she was talking about and could get something accomplished because she knew law jargon, however, I got no results. She got me absolutely nowhere. She will only get you results if she feels you are worthy. I felt like in the courtroom she could have said so many of the things about my case that I had told her, assumed she would get around to it and that she would know when the time was right, half of what I told her was never mentioned in court and she had an attitude when I tried to tell her in the courtroom what my concerns were. A complete waste of money on a woman that only cares about what she believes happened. I feel she was judging me as a person and allowed me to get the short end of the stick. I would NEVER recommend her.

She does not represent her clients whatsoever. Absolutely can't hold her own in a courtroom, gets smashed by the other attorneys. Removes herself from cases two days before trial without prior notice to the client, all the while taking payments as if she is going to represent them. Hired her for a family case, she let the other side walk all over us and then made me into signing her release from the case, 2 days before a scheduled trial by jury.

Was interested in protecting Judge's clerk from her mistake re: my case being made known to Judge rather than helping my defense. Displayed lack of interest for my concerns and questions during court proceedings. Wouldn't explain sentence to me. Treated me in a very rude manner during my confusion re: the above during court proceedings. Spoke with a raised voice in a mean manner showing on her face and pointed angrily rather than explain to me what just happened. This place is one of if not the worst law firms I’ve ever dealt with. First they stuck you with some junior lawyer who doesn’t know what he is doing and has zero confidence, so they have to ask for help from other lawyers in the firm so next thing you know your paying three lawyers to do one lawyers work. Nothing ever got resolved regarding the matter at hand the billing was borderline criminal in what they were charging. Why should I have to pay three different lawyers because the original lawyer didn’t know what in the hell he was doing? I mean so I basically paid thousands of dollars to a lawyer who didn’t know anything so he went and consulted two more lawyers within the firm, then billed me for his lack of knowledge or experience. Stay. Away from This place

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
