I just want to say James Latimer and the whole Ladimir law. Firm was great awesome from start to finish except for Sergio Monteon, who was very rude condescending and answered questions in tone not very customer service oriented, but I’d have to say Mr. Latimer and the rest of the team is awesome not only did he achieve in winning my case with Workmen’s Comp., but also went above and beyond with applying me for subsequent injuries, benefits trust fund, and also won my case at 100% disabled. God bless you James God bless your entire team.

I have been a client for a few years since the onset of my wc injury. Throughout my entire time being a client I have experienced good customer service from both staff and attorneys. However, their Office Manager Monroe, is very rude and unprofessional. I find this to be so disappointing that he interacts with clients is this tone. It is also unfortunate because he is a representative of the firm.

Our appointment with Nicole was to primarily give Power of Attorney to our daughter and possibly update our nine-year- old Trust. We were happy with the first Trust and only wanted to make a few changes. There was a focus on fees right off and we were asked to make a $5,000 deposit that day and the hourly fee was about $315.00. At our appointment, Nicole spent 1 1/2 hours primarily making copies of our old Trust and making copies of everything we had. She also drew many diagrams (that we looked at upside down from across the table). She didn't ask enough questions, so when we got home, I wrote a short letter with the names and proper spellings of our family members and other important information. We received a draft very quickly of the new Trust and her assistant made 2-3 telephone calls checking our progress. The draft was full of errors -- including our names and especially the full name of our daughter who was going to have Power of Attorney. We told the assistant that we were unhappy with the careless preparation and would go ahead with the Powers of Attorney only and not the Trust update. The fine print of the Attorney Contract said that there would be no refund if a Trust draft was issued (no matter how quickly and carelessly it was made) and three telephone calls. It was obvious that we would lose the full $5,000, but we decided to look for a better attorney anyway. We did find another Chico Attorney -- who gave us exactly what we wanted in a clear concise document and explained exactly what to do when the time came for surviving trustees to use the document.

I would like to express sincere and heartfelt gratitude for the work of Jesse Franklin-Murdock and the Center for American Liberty's extraordinary support in my case. From the outset, when I had that initial call with Eric Sell, and with Josh Dixon – they immediately pulled in strong resources and subsequently Mr. Franklin-Murdock. All these actions and the associated conversations demonstrated dedication, professionalism, superior competency, knowledge, and application of relevant case law by everyone who touched my case but most of all you, Jesse, so thank you! You yourself Jesse, went well above expectation by fielding calls and executing on some key action items, even while on international vacation. Jesse, to you and the entire Center for American Liberty and the entire Dhillon Law Group – THANK YOU for defending my rights with vigor, professionalism, superior application of law, a successful outcome, and for the intangibles like diligence, listening, empathy and that unique feeling that I, as a client, actually matter. Ten thousand kudos to you!

Excellent. Jacqueline and Co. helped me deftly navigate some tricky questions when it came to a relative's estate (this estate was a veritable mess). Their responses were always thorough and timely. Even better, their approach to billing is reasonable and transparent. Not always the case for attorneys. 10/10 would recommend.

Don't expect any sort of real communication for over a year of your loved ones passing. This attorney has an unreasonable delay in services performed. They never answer the phone and you can leave all the voicemails and emails you want, it will go ignored. I would never want my loved ones to feel the way this attorney has made me and others in the will to feel after going through what we have had to go through with them.

Linda Silveria is the best of the best at working with families that have to make very difficult decisions. She is gentle and very professional. I worked with Linda when she did my parents trust, then my trust and many of my clients over the years that all loved her. She speaks English not legalese. She is looking to see that her clients best interests are fully satisfied and interjects possibilities as she is thinking ahead of the curve. Having a Living Trust and timely estate planning when life events change....keeps you empowered and puts your mind at ease so your family knows EXACTLY what you want done with your assets!!

Linda is not only very personable and knowledgeable, she explains things (using a white board as appropriate) thoroughly in language that is easy to understand without feeling that your question is inappropriate or ignorant. Linda explained various options available to us in our need for a will, trusts and durable medical power of attorneys and then gave us very detailed forms to complete that were extensive but, again, easy to understand. She told us not to hesitate to call her with any questions we might have. Our concerns included protecting our assets and reducing the tax liabilities for our heirs. Linda was able to explain the current tax laws and helped us make decisions that met our needs. We felt that the final documents she drew up met those concerns and needs. Linda's work is thorough, accurate, and definitely personalized. My husband and I highly recommend Linda.

I cannot speak highly enough of her expertise, professionalism, and compassionate approach. From the moment I began speaking with Shannon, I knew I was in capable hands. Shannon possesses a unique ability to empathize with her clients while educating them about the complexities of the legal process. Unlike other attorneys, Shannon goes above and beyond to ensure her clients fully understand their rights and options, making informed decisions with confidence. Her wealth of knowledge and top-tier professionalism are truly remarkable. Shannon was able to set realistic expectations for my case while instilling in me a sense of confidence and assurance. Despite the challenges of navigating the family court system, Shannon's guidance and support served as a beacon of hope during what can often be a daunting and emotionally taxing experience. In a system that can sometimes feel overwhelming and intimidating, Shannon shines as a bright light of positivity and reassurance. Her unwavering dedication to her clients' well-being is evident in every interaction, and I am immensely grateful to her. Working with Shannon DeBiase has been nothing short of amazing, and I cannot thank her enough for her outstanding advocacy and support throughout my legal journey. I wholeheartedly recommend her services to anyone in need of exceptional legal representation. Thank you, Shannon, for your unwavering commitment and for making a positive difference in my life.

Avoid at all costs. I had the misfortune of using an attorney from this firm. They over charge, and then proceeded to do the bare minimum. In court they are too passive letting the other side have their way resulting in my child suffering as a result. Do not let your family suffer. Update: my attorney from this firm contacted me about my review. They stated that their poor work was intended to save me money. I never asked for that.

We retained Denise to negotiate a settlement agreement for my son's estate after he passed away Christmas Day 2011. We hired her because she assured us, given all the facts of the situation, that she could help us avoid probate. Out of the many attorneys we spoke with this was the key motivation for retaining Denise. Our main goal was to save our family the pain of a lengthy legal process after our loss. Her first recommendation to us after receiving a retainer was to file for probate. Her actions during a very sensitive turning point cost all of us dearly, in legal fees and in emotional health. She alienated the parties by bolstering the party's attorney rather than proposing a settlement agreement. We canceled our retainer check. To make matters worse she is actually going to take my living son and I to small claims court over $2500. After the loss of my son.... the worst decision I made was talking to this firm and to Denise Chambliss.

I was referred to Mr. Stewart by two elder attorneys in the San Diego area. Mr Stewart was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable regarding not only the legal aspects of the elderly, but also how the elderly age and what the family may expect in the future. His recomendations regarding asset protection and medicare enrollment allowed my father to have health care far beyond what we could have provided otherwise. Scott's detailed estate plan also allowed us to provide personal private care for my father as my father's health declines. Scott also advised me on what skilled nursing facility would best serve my father's needs in our area. I have found Scott to be very personable and extremely wise in his consultation with me regarding complicated family estate planning issues. I have personally recommended several people already to Scott as I have received excellent advice from him.

My first meeting with Scott was wonderful. I was so nervous about my situation and he really took the time to listen and give a realistic strategy for how to handle my case. After that initial meeting, I had gathered all the information Scott needed and called back a week later. He didn't get back to me for 2 weeks. His secretaries attitude and attire were unprofessional every time I went down there, the way he handled my case was sloppy. Eventually when I called after trying to set up a second meeting for over a month his assistant Bonnie informed me that Scott wasn't even handling my case anymore. Having wasted over 2 months of my time, constantly being put on hold and never actually doing anything besides that initial meeting, he didn't even have the decency to say he wasn't handling my case anymore. My only recommendation for clients going to Scott is to find another lawyer.

As a geriatric care manager, I often need to refer clients to attorneys with a particular expertise in the areas of elder law and Medi-Cal planning. Mr. Stewart has extensive knowledge of eligibility criteria, asset protection strategies, and issues related to incapacity planning. He was a helpful advocate as my clients navigated their way through the benefits planning process and the transition into care in a long-term care facility. Even more importantly, he has continued to provide help and information beyond the Medi-Cal qualification process, which I greatly value and appreciate.

Divorce is an emotionally taxing journey that can leave you feeling lost and vulnerable. However, amidst the storm, I found a true guiding light in Attorney William Hannosh. Facing a particularly complex and challenging divorce, I am beyond grateful to have had him by my side. From our very first consultation, William Hannosh had a deep understanding of the challenges that lay ahead. He listened attentively as I shared my concerns, fears, and hopes. What truly set hm apart was his ability to empathize with my situation on a personal level. William Hannosh wasn't just an attorney; he was a confidante who made me feel heard and understood. Trust is paramount in such a delicate process, and William’s unwavering honesty and transparency fostered a level of trust I hadn't anticipated. He guided me through each step, explaining the legal intricacies in a way that was easy to comprehend. I never felt rushed or dismissed – every question I had was met with patience and clarity. This not only empowered me to make informed decisions but also gave me a sense of control during a time when everything felt out of control. What truly amazed me about William Hannosh was his prowess in the courtroom. He handled my case with a tenacity and dedication that I hadn't seen before. Trials that seemed insurmountable suddenly became winnable battles under his guidance. Hi strategic thinking and thorough preparation were evident in the courtroom, and his presence commanded respect from all parties involved. William’s ability to navigate complex legal negotiations while keeping my best interests at heart was nothing short of remarkable. He fought fiercely for what was fair and just, ensuring that my rights were protected every step of the way. It was evident that he genuinely cared about the outcome of my case, and that level of dedication was a driving force in achieving a favorable resolution. During a time when I felt at my weakest, William Hannosh was my pillar of strength. His professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication to my case not only secured a favorable outcome but also provided me with the emotional support I needed to persevere. If you're facing a difficult divorce and need an attorney who understands the challenges, can be trusted implicitly, and can achieve the seemingly impossible, I wholeheartedly recommend Attorney William Hannosh. He was not just my attorney, but a true ally in my journey toward ending and old chapter and creating a brand new chapter in life.

I worked with Sunnien Law and Mr Hannosh on my divorce case. I paid them for my divorce 4000$ in advance. As soon as I realized that Sunnien law spent all this money, I wrote them a letter that I don't want to work with their agency anymore, because I don't have a job and money and I am actually an international student. In 2 month they sent me an invoice and said that I have to pay them almost 4000$ on top of what I already paid. I feel like these people tricked me because my English is not very good. They did a very bad job with my divorce case. I finally went to the court alone. They did everything to charge me as much as possible and do a very little job. They work very badly, don't pay attention to details and they don't care about the result. NEVER hire them.

Stay away from this lawyer. I paid the retainer back on June 14, 2022 although I was not ready to file for the dissolution of my marriage because we were trying to get the house sold first before my husband and I filed but Denise had told me that to be assured of her availability, I needed to pay her the retainer fee. So I gave her my credit card and bank info, I figured, she’s a lawyer, she will not scam me right? I told her that I will let her know when I am ready for her to file. So I’ve emailed her requesting an appointment over the phone on August 17, no response. I’ve sent her another email on August 27 requesting the same and she finally told me that she was available to talk on Sunday evening at 5. I spoke with her and she had told me that she will be sending two forms for me to fill out (I remember later that I had already filled out two forms that she needed to file) but that she just had moved to a new office and will have to hook up her computer first-she was going to send me those forms later on that night. A whole week passed, and I haven’t received any form of communication from her, I’ve sent sent emails on 8/29, 8/31, and 9/1 following up on the forms that she was supposed to send but not once did she respond. I’ve left messages on her phone, sent her text messages on 9/5 & 9/8, still no response. I thought of calling her on my work cell phone on 9/8 and I’ve received a text from her saying right away stating”please text me”. On 9/16, I’ve emailed her notifying her that I wanted to opt out of my contract with her since she hasn’t done anything for me and I had not heard back from her despite many attempts of contacting her. She called me on 9/19 and told me that she was ill. I told her again that I want to cancel our contract and I want my retainer back. She said it had to go through accounting first, that was 14 days ago and I’ve still not received any reimbursement.

My ex filed an emergency ex parte order which the court holds hearings on pretty fast. He also requested child support. I was so lost in the process as things happened suddenly and had no representation during the first two hearings. I was lost as to what was happening or why it was happening. I requested a consult with Denise who called me back. I'd spoken with a few attorneys before getting to Denise, none of which gave me the time of day other than to say they worked in family law and what their rates were. During our consult, she took her time to explain (although I'd already been to court twice) what was happening, ask me me questions to ensure she understood specifics related to my case, and then explained what defenses we could present and what the process would be moving forward all before I paid her a dime. She was honest in that this may not be a fast process, transparent, and most importantly (especially as I have never had to deal with family court before) sympathetic. Although we are still in court, she has been able to get some pretty nice wins - legal rights such as educational and medical access, ex was interfering with my ability to communicate with our child. Denise was able to argue this and have judge order him to purchase her a cellphone so I could communicate with her directly. ALL of this was done in her 1st court appearance on my behalf! She calls prior to court hearings to make sure we are on same page with strategy, what may possibly happen/what to expect and what we're going after during the hearing. She also calls to debrief after court hearing with next steps. Denise representing me has given me hope where it felt hopeless before and helped me to understand more about the process where I had zero understanding and knowledge.

Even my ex-employer, a former state court judge, has complimented him. I know that Mr. Roundy used to work in finance and I appreciate that expertise. I hired this attorney for a consult regarding my mother's care (or lack thereof) in a skilled nursing facility in Santa Barbara. She asked several questions but seemed to have trouble focusing and often sighed or said "I don't understand". Professional advice was not forthcoming, and I eventually had to terminate the consult as it was becoming more and more a waste of time. The cost was high, but that is not the complaint. This attorney was recommended to me by Senior Planning Services but it appears that these recommendations are part of a small group of business that loyally recommend each other rather than prioritize what is best for the client. I would not recommend this attorney for pursuing solution based advice.

Dallas is an extremely skilled elder law expert and has 20+ years of experience specifically with Medi-Cal. This extends far beyond the preparation of the application: she understands the inherent nuances of a very complicated program and is able to analyze and advise you as a client based upon your personal profile. I would not have been able to apply on behalf of my father without her guidance and help! We hired Dallas to help us file an application and she did so much more: She worked with us on a thorough strategy, took us through the process and went above and beyond to work directly with my fathers' nursing home and other entities that needed to provide us with back up documentation. She understands the system and the loopholes. She is a lifesaver and so incredibly knowledgeable in her field. I am so thankful that we started the process with a professional expert. She will save you money and bring you great benefit and peace of mind. I don't know how we could have done it without her! Thank you so much Dallas, we mean it! I would highly recommend her services to anyone needing assistance in the Elder Law field.

Ms. Atkins is a very special type of attorney. She took the time to explain the process and applicable laws so that I could make informed and safe decisions. Even though it was possibly not the most cost-effective manner of proceeding from her point of view, Ms. Atkins worked to connect with me on a personal level. She took the time to listen to me as I walked through the background of my experiences, and treated me as though my feelings and needs were of utmost importance. She helped me to set up complex and varied health care documents (including advanced health care directives, HIPAA documents, and others) while avoiding pitfalls I would never have been able to identify on my own. She was honest and forthright, but also kind and compassionate...truly the perfect blend of humanity and skill.

After my fathers recent visit with Peter Keon to update his Will/Trust my father reports that Mr. Peter A. Keon treated him very unprofessionally and condescending. My father even scheduled an interpreter for their meeting and Mr. Keon kept insisting that my father should, “speak English” repetitively. Mr. Keon even made and comment to my father “you’re crazy” regarding something he didn’t agree with. The interpreter was passive as she wasn’t equipped to translate correctly or even advocate for my father. My father felt miss represented throughout the entire meeting as Mr. Keons unprofessional demeanor resulted in Mr. Keon walking up out his seat to handle other matters as the translator was interrupting what my father was stating. Mr. Keon’s was not only passive aggressive with certain statements and comments towards my father in the meeting but he was also very discriminating that my farther felt the aggression and had to walk out the meeting. This company has been overall extremely disappointing and unprofessional. My father mentioned that it took several weeks to get this meeting scheduled with this law firm. To get treated this way is truly insensitive toward their clients. Especially ones who pay for their service. We Do Not recommend this company to other and if you’re looking to get involved Stay Away especially if you are a Latino. The company is Not worth your time and especially not your money. Ms Powell is an attorney for Senior Legal of Santa Cruz County, CA. I am a senior citizen of Santa Cruz County, CA. This last year, a 30 something woman, threatened to shoot me, and release an attack pit bull dog, to kill my chihuahuas and to attack me. I turned to senior legal to help me get a restraining order, Melia Powell just simply wouldn't help me. Eventually this same young woman, emboldened by the lack of consequences, also threatened another neighbor in the same way, that neighbor did get a 5 year restraining order to protect herself from this dangerous 30 something woman.

Anthony Delas was such a horrible Attorney to deal with and here is why. Besides taking 2 years rather than 6 months to go through my bankruptcy process he always kept me in the dark of what was going on and what I should expect. He would always give me a days notice for meetings or important appointments which would get in trouble at work. His emails are very hard to understand and he would always have me resend attachments because he would "lose" them. I wouldn't recommend this attorney. He was such a headache to work with and made this process even more stressful. I honestly felt like he wasn't on my side. I was already very stressed and upset that I had to go bankrupt and he made the experience even worst.

Totally disappointed that they took all of my personal details, rushed me while on the phone, and gave me this excuse that doesn’t make any sense. It’s unrealistic to do an intake if you claim to have too many clients. Why waste anyone’s time. It’s better to really provide a reason as to why you aren’t able to help. I wasn’t sure if I would do business with them, since they request $1,000 up front and they don’t help to access records by subpoena or any private investigation that may be needed. If you talk to them, I would recommend getting your questions answered first, prior to giving them all of your personal details. I totally wasted my time.

Oliver is along time contact but not a close friend. Initially, we contacted him for 'estate' advise. His help was excellent. He answers the occasional question w/o sending a bill! He's personable, understanding, patient, kind, honest and very smart... Don't know what else to add! His honesty would not allow him to mislead!! skc, Realtor

I hired Michael as a Probate Attorney when my dad passed away and he was TERRIBLE. He was nice before I initially hired him. Once he was hired he showed his true self. He wouldn't return my calls. He didn't want to give me my file back after I fired him. He wanted me to pay for the copies, when the file belong to me. He was always rude whenever I called to speak wit him about doing his job. He cost me additional fees, because I hired another attorney to do the work. For a while he had me feeling that all attorneys were like him but now I know they are not. If you are ever referred to him, RUN. Your experience will be bad if you hire this attorney.... CLIENT BEWARE !!!! I WISH THEY HAD THE OPTION OF NO STARS. HE DOESN'T DESERVE A STAR AT ALL...

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
