Deva is a brilliant financial planner. She is an excellent listener & communicator and her advice is sound. She also has experience with filing taxes, so she understands taxation and guides you on the best practices for long term financial well-being, however that looks for you and your goals. She takes a compassionate and prescriptive approach to something that is hard to wrap your mind around and explains it in terms that are easily understood. Her financial planning services are top tier and I would whole-heartedly recommend them to anyone.

I first learned about Angel's services through a "Wine & Wills" event she hosted in Seattle, and I was very impressed by the level of information she shared and the way that she educated about the great importance of considering how we'll leave our affairs after we pass, and how this really does affect all of us. I scheduled an exploratory call with her afterwards that my husband could also attend. It did require a little preparation, but nothing crazy and everything that was requested was totally necessary to having this conversation. At the end of that call, she showed us all of our options and it was easy to understand what would work best for what my husband and I wanted and valued for our family! Working with Angel now, the trust is almost 100% "funded", meaning that should I pass away early, or my husband precede me in death, the other will have an easy, relaxed, peaceful experience, and can focus on grieving rather than worry about our assets be unduly taxed, caught up in lengthy and stressful probate court proceedings, or even become stranded where the surviving spouse does not have the proper permissions with the banks, etc and is unable to access parts of the estate. The way Angel's services work, is that after you pay the flat fee, you have her support for life. This has worked out great for us, as it took us a while to actually complete the actions. Knowing we can reach out with any questions going forward is very comforting. She really does care and is very thorough with the legalities. We feel confident that our affairs are in order now that we have our wills, power of attorneys (medical and financial), and revocable living trust in order. Thank you so much Angel!

We first worked with Lauren Pitman ten years ago to update our will since our children were grown, as well as to clarify our intentions with our assets. Lauren is friendly, thorough, made the process easy. She assisted us and prepared legal documents that will carry us to our end. If we need legal assistance, Lauren Pitman is our first call. We also refer family and friends to her.

My wife and I used Lauren Pitman a few years back and loved her service. She was kind, empathetic and most importantly, knowledgeable. She is a true master of her craft. We were so pleased with her that we have been referring her to our friends and family and they have all had the same wonderful experience with her services that we did. If you need legal assistance, stop looking elsewhere and go with Lauren Pitman, you won’t regret it!

Megan and Owen have helped us many times over the years. I appreciate their ethical stance on avoiding even the appearance of conflict of interest and the estate assistance they have provided for bereaved families in our community. Though I have referred many families, I didn't know how much their help meant until they helped us when our son died. They made the legal details as easy and streamlined as possible. We are blessed to have many good attorneys in our community and Megan and Owen are two of the best. Thank you!!!

Dropped a huge retainer and we have not had a single filing completed in time for my family’s case with Leslie Gilberston specifically. Communication is massively lacking. I’m charged for every time I email or call for an update that I don’t get. Be wary when they say they have the capacity for your case and expect to be your own advocate with the courts if you choose this firm, especially if it is family law.

I was able to retain Michele as my attorney for a dissolution of my marriage. I can not thank her enough for the professionalism, compassion and knowledge she shared at every single step of the way. Whenever I had a question she had an honest answer and explained everything to me fully. I felt like I was doing something relatively easy instead of how complicated I had heard divorce was. Michele was always quick to answer my emails and return my phone calls. She knew what my goals were in the uncontested divorce and fully made sure the outcome would be in accordance with them. I wanted to make an equitable split, make sure I could make a one time payment to cover all spousal support and she went above and beyond. She handled all the communications for the split of 401k and pension accounts so that I didn’t have to spend hours on the phone with the financial companies. She laid all assets and liabilities out cleanly and organized the entire case so that even a kindergartener could understand. Michele was honest with me about outcomes but even then came out above what she had promised by her hard work and determination to fight to my advantage. She made the process easy for me to be able to do all paperwork and get the case finished even after I had moved out of state. She worked with my legal insurance, probably even undercharging me what she deserved to get for such diligent work. I can not recommend her enough or say enough good things about Michele and I believe she is the best lawyer in the entire Seattle area that I’ve ever interacted with or heard of. You could not do better than to give Michele a call and see the results for yourself.

Michele is really very helpful and knowledgeable. She helped me out wrt to my small claims related to tenant-owner issue and helped me throughout with explaining the entire process, coming up with the content for my dispute and preparing me for small court appearance. I ended up wining the case during my first hearing itself and got my full security deposit back along with my other expenses. I would recommend everyone to work with Michele and I would surely like to work with her once again in case if I happen to face any issue for which I need legal support and guidance.

Very disappointing - after a great first initial meeting, I’ve been strung along. I’ve had to send multiple emails with no response. After getting one response and giving Michelle an easy out so that I could move on and find someone else to help me, she said she wanted to still work on my case keeping me on the hook for another few weeks. Since then - ghosted. This has caused active harm to my situation because of timing constraints. Very disappointed because Michelle seemed smart and sharp, but useless if she’s not dependable and has no integrity with her word or accountability.

In my opinion this guy took my deposit and gave me a report that didn't address my needs, it looked like something that a freshman slapped together the night before it was due. Didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.

My elderly parents hired Rick for estate planning with myself as Trustee for the estate trust. After my mothers passing I discovered that Rick had set up numerous LLC's and a labyrinth trust web that was so complex for their meager estate it was laughable. also he had interjected himself into the trusts complexity so there was really no way out other than to keep him on through closing out the Estate. through out the process Rick appeared arrogant, overbearing, blustery and uncooperative. all there were many errors - one such instance was in his attempt to clear up a title matter related to my parents house he inadvertent recorded documents transferring the neighbors house into my parents name. the first words out of his month was I didn't feel comfortable doing that but that was what the title company told me to do .............. Rick Gregorek was almost prophetic in his care of my elderly father. He prepared everything, and I mean everything, ahead of time so Dad was completely prepared when the "Fly-Bys" showed up (distant relatives who contribute nothing, complain about everything, and swoop in at the end for the cash). Rick saw the red flags long before Dad or I did and he prepared Dad meticulously. There is no doubt that Dad would have ended up in a nursing home had Rick not been so diligent. We spent a lot of time selecting the right lawyer and it payed off. It was not just his knowledge of the law, but his understanding of human nature in all its forms that sets him apart. For these reasons I unequivocally give Rick Gregorek my highest recommendation. A+++

Rick over the last 4-5 years has been and continues to be instrumental in our estate planning process including establishing multiple Trust(s) and being a Trustee. He also helped us move a Trust to Washington State from a previous location within the US. Rick is extremely knowledgeable and we have never felt uncomfortable with his suggestions and insight into the legal and moral values during the process. This is especially true regarding family and the special circumstances which at times may arise. He listens well taking into account each aspect one may bring to the table and will make every effort to explore and find a solution. Rick also brings expertise in the field of estate taxes and how to best address specific issues. If Rick does not know the answer he and his staff will make every effort to find one. Rick is good with being responsive and keeping us informed. If we need to send a follow up inquiry to a question he will get back to us within the next 12 to 24 hours. I know he is busy! Overall, we have the utmost trust and faith in Rick's ability to provide quality service and value to such important issues as estate planning including multi-generational trust and financial/tax issues. Rick I believe is an excellent attorney and of good character.

I am an experienced Washington attorney who has both fought Levi Larson on behalf of one of my Malpractice clients AND, subsequent to that case resolving, hired him to help knock down a complaint made against my physician wife's practice. Happily, the complaint against my wife made to the Department of Health, Medical Quality Assurance Commission was dismissed with a finding that she had acted entirely within the standard of care for her practice area. She, of course, knew it the whole time, but proving something is different than just knowing it. Levi helped us prove it. Thank you, Attorney Levi Larson!

I am so grateful for the help I received from Ms Hosanna. She helped me when I was in a situation where the incident could have affected my life. She asked me if the information was truthful I said yes . She wanted to get to know me and we discussed the issues I had in the past that I was being judged by. I had worked on my issues and my self and had become a better person. She had faith in me and took my case. We went to court and she is highly respected by the courts. Her professional behavior and how she started the facts was amazing. The judge now believed in my transformation . The proof showed my new identity. We were victorious. I am so grateful that she gave me a chance and seen mistakes of the past should not affect your future life if you are a changed person. I was not wrong and the statements against me was not valid. I am so thankful to her and I made a vow to go back to school and retain my child hood dream. I am so thankful that she believed that people do change for the good and her encouragement of me. It gave me hope that I could still have the life I wanted. I have a 3.3 GPA and I am working hard to graduate.. Her help made this possible , for this I am so grateful, thankful and motivated to be a even better person everyday. Thank you Daisy

After working with two attorneys (one from a reputable firm) and receiving disappointing results for an obscene amount of money I was thrilled to find Desiree to modify a Child Custody Order. Desiree is very attentive, responsive, professional and personable. Her knowledge in child custody is extensive, and her assertive personality was exactly what I needed. Desiree was able to provide results and quickly. She implemented a Child Custody Order that is not only concrete but more importantly, in the best interest of my son. Nancy was very helpful in getting a parenting plan modified and a residential credit for me. My ex was refusing to cooperate with me after her income went from pretty much the same as mine to twice as much. Also, I went from the bare bones visitation to an average of 3 nights a week with our child. Nancy walked me through the process and saved me well over $300 a month after it was all said and done. My wife and I needed a fairly complex estate package (involving foreign countries). Ms Andrea Hardin was referred to us by one of my MSFT colleagues. She was able to go through all of the components of the estate plans for me and my family. She went and extra mile to explain things to us that were new and unknown (and there are many!) We are happy and comfortable knowing that our affairs are in order. When the opportunity came to purchase a new home, we called Ms Hardin again. She was as kind as the first time and very very patient with us. She went through every page of every document and found a lot of inconsistencies in the materials proposed by the selling party. We felt well protected and taken care of by such an accomplished attorney. Thank you, Ms Hardin! We will get back to you for the attorney support when the time comes to sell our house in the future. Thank you again!

We Will Not Return Ms. Hardin is a competent attorney with a well-established practice; however, her professional demeanor (or rather the lack thereof) made us extremely uncomfortable in her office. The condescending attitude she exhibited towards her paralegal during our meeting was both astonishing and disappointing. When we left Ms. Hardin's office, my husband and I both agreed that we would not return based on her behavior. How someone treats their subordinates is an excellent gauge of character. There are many attorneys in the Puget Sound area who are fully competent in this area of law AND treat others with respect. It might well benefit Ms. Hardin if she remembered that fact. We will not return to Ms. Hardin's office nor will we recommend this attorney to fellow peers.

Only spoke on the phone and exchanged emails a few times, he never once told me that he would charge me and never told me what his rates were. He provided me with incorrect information regarding the company I inquired about, told me I needed to do my own research, and disappeared for a month - during which time I hired another atty figuring he wasn't interested in the case. I signed no contract with him and he filed no paperwork for me. When he learned I hired another atty, he billed me for time spent on my case. I sent a letter outlining what I wrote above and said I was willing to give him half and that by cashing the check, it meant he accepted it as payment in full. He cashed the check and promptly sent a bill for the balance with interest. According to the WSBA attorneys are supposed to be clear about their hourly rate and billing practices. He did not provide these at any time and refused to compromise. We paid the rest of the bill under duress. Not a trustworthy or ethical person.

Mr. Fagerness worked with me on a personal injury case. It was complicated and he realized that the outcome would be better if he obtained a co-counsel. This did not cost me any extra, but required that he share his portion of the settlement with the co-counsel. This was selfless on his part. He was not paid by the hour, but never-the less, he worked evenings, weekends and long into the night on my case. If we would have gone to trial, he would have gotten a greater percentage, but he put my well being (I am in fragile health) first and recommended settling out of court when the offer seemed reasonable. He showed compassion and genuine concern for me. He went above and beyond for me. I highly recommend him.

We worked with Derek to set up a living family trust and found him to be an affable, knowledgable and very patient attorney. He explained various tax state and federal laws in a simple enough way for us to understand what the trust structure would be. He was able to set up a trust in such a way to protect our family from high state and federal taxes esp. around inheritance and estate taxes. Would strongly recommend him for tax and estate planning. He does appear to be quite busy, so it helps if you contact his PA/staff occasionally to make sure the planning meetings are arranged as discussed. But that was not a major hassle, given how nice our experience was with Derek.

My wife and I met with Derek for initial consolation for estate planning. The meeting was great and it seemed clear that Derek knows his stuff. We left that meeting with a plan that Derek would provide a quote and a timeline for the work that needed to be done. Unfortunately, that was the last productive contact that we had. It's been about 6 weeks since that meeting, and despite multiple requests, we have not received a quote or an estimate of when we would get one... Not sure what's going on.. Dereks Admin is Rosalie. She is nice, but keeps giving me non-commital run-around. I said that if Derek just does not want to do this work, just let us know, but all we get is "I'll check with Derek and get back to you" ?? Strange..... We are really disappointed because we have been searching for an estate lawyer that we felt good about... Thought we had found one.

I email Tyler about a question, two weeks go by, no response. So I send a follow up email; in all correspondence I always cc his assistant. So four weeks go by and still no response. My brother went into the office and confirmed we still had monies available on our account. We both have tried calling the office of Tyler Farmer a couple of times and no response, no reply. This is completely unprofessional conduct for a retained attorney! To this day, Tuesday, August 9th, 2022, Tyler Farmer has yet to respond. I don’t even know what to think of this, but it doesn’t leave me with a good feeling.

We met with him to do a contested adoption in which he stated he did so the time But that was definitely not the truth. After taking $8000 from us he had nothing to show for the money except he filed a petition for adoption. Webley and his assistant continually dodged our calls and emails until finally i went down to his office and demanded an update. He informed me he was out of money and needed more to continue so we asked for an invoice for all the money we had already given him. He said he would need a week or two to put an invoice together (fabricate one more likely). Don't make the same mistake we did.

Greg did great by me and my children. He is very no nonsense and will tell you exactly what you need to hear-on another note his secretary will tell you her entire life story, loudly and non-stop, it was the only downfall of Greg. I will also recommend Greg to anyone I know although I will advice them that Jacki is hard to handle sometimes....she seems to forget its about the client and not about her stories

I used Rhonda to set up a will and a trust. As other's have said, she's straightforward and very knowledgeable. She is thoughtful in her recommendations and explains the law and lets you make the decisions. I do not understand the negative reviews. Perhaps they were disappointed when Rhonda stood up for the rights of her elder clients instead of family members.

My mother had dementia and hired her. This attorney disposed of her property, put her in a nursing home, and never contacted family. Once I realized what was happening and emailed this attorney, she responded with "your mother never wants to see you or hear from you ever again." Proceed with caution, her name rude(wo)man says it all.

I was referred to Ronda by another highly recommended attorney who was unavailable. I am real impressed by her knowledge of her subject area and straightforwardness in her dealings. When my Mom was unable to come to her office, Rhonda came to the nursing home for her to sign things. She also knew what to do to make things easier for everyone. I can see where men may have a problem with her if they have issues with strong women. If you want someone who really knows the in and outs of her specialty, I highly recommend her.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
