We engaged James Jordan's team to help update our wills. It appears that this law firm specializes in document preparation (wills, trusts, real estate, etc.). The attorney himself seemed knowledgeable and explained things appropriately. They did what we needed done. I hesitate to recommend as i did not find his staff very customer friendly. It was difficult to schedule follow up meetings. This could not be done for 2 or more weeks and must be done with phone call as they do not allow scheduling via email.

This is the w this is the worst lawyer i have ever met in my life. he doesn't pay attention to your case and he even charges you for breathing. Do yourself a great favor and I promise you that you will be thankful for it, look for another lawyer that is worth it because this is the worst you can have. because apart from the fact that he excites you by saying that you can win, he only wants to be in court to charge you more. I ended up fired him because I never trusted it and after I fired him he sent me another bill for 5,000 dlrs for doing nothing and gave me a few days to pay him or he would sue me. Having him as my lawyer has been the worst mistake I've ever made.

Got my 60 in a 45 speeding ticket dismissed. Attorneys commonly send letters to people seeing if they need representation. The letter says if there was an error or if a ticket was not received to disregard the letter. Call and speak with the team before you rely on reviews by people that have never used them or even spoken to them. I spoke with them, followed their instructions, and got excellent results. I asked for a "no contest" plea and try to minimize my punishment, but the ticket was dismissed!! Greg and his team delivered everything exactly as they specified.

I recently received a traffic ticket for speeding in Virginia. Prior to my court date I received a letter from Attorney Gregory Waddell offering the availability of his services if I needed an attorney. His letter contained an offer for a free telephone consultation. I called Mr. Waddell and he was in court. His paralegal said she would have him return my call. Within two hours Mr. Waddell returned my call and asked how he could be of assistance. After reviewing my citation, and it's particular circumstances, he did not feel his services and associated fees were necessary since I planned on personally attending my court date. He went on to give me helpful advice on how to plead my case and suggested I take an online defensive driving course prior to the court date as the judges. have a tendency to look favorably on that type of pro active approach. WOW! What a true professional approach from Mr. Waddell. So many attorneys would have pitched their services to collect a fee. Mr. Waddell was more interested in doing the right thing and not taking advantage of a client. I can assure you that if I ever find myself in real need of an attorney I will be seeking out Mr. Waddell. I suggest you do the same. Gil Patrick

He was paid in full but he did not review my case or meet with me until the day before court. He spent 5 minutes with me and it showed in the courtroom. Don't waste your money on this guy, you will get more satisfaction flushing your money down the toilet either way your money will be wasted.

If you care about you best chances avoid Ron Slaven! The rest of the staff are nice. Slaven is not worth the price and most likely won’t use any evidence in court that you’re paying for and will not use any evidence you give him or legal aid. Most important he will not update you how he will proceed to handle the case. John and Janet and Angel are much better. Avoid Ron Slaven he even forgot to bring up my only witness and did not use one single document or evidence that he printed out or document you pay for such as police, medical, or legal documents. He wings it the day before unprepared, forgetful, and used no evidence that I ended up paying $2,000 for he never brought it up in court. He only cares about money not you don’t make the same mistake.

I found the entire process of working with these people to be so totally unacceptable that I had to fire them before trial. They demonstrated a lack of knowledge about my case and did not follow through when it was time to execute the strategy that was explained to me among other issues such as failing to return emails or to provide advice before asking me to make a decision. I found out the hard way that it is very expensive to fire a lawyer and difficult to get your money back so I cannot recommend strongly enough that you go literally anywhere else.

He puts unnecessary items in your case just so he can charge you more to remove them. Doesn't serve the defendant correctly which causes which grants them an extension which you still have to pay the attorney for showing up in court. Just horrible service all around. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for an attorney that even acts as if they care. Oh, and you will speak to the paralegal 99.5% of the time who will bill you for their errors.

My husband hire Mr. Frank for son custody case. At 1st he seemed to care about my son situation. My son had done everything that he supposed to do when the other party didn't follow the court orders. My son had called Mr. Frank several times for advice. (When the other party had lied on my son in court) Mr. Frank didn't even bother to check into that to make sure if it was true or not. Took him awhile to return all calls. Before the court date, there was some documents were email to my son on what was going to take place before court. The day of court, the two parties (lawyers) were discussing of what to do. At that time, we noticed our son was very UPSET of what was said by his lawyer. To make a long story short, Mr. Frank didn't even FIGHT for my son in his custody for his child. He pretty much WAS GLUED TO HIS SEAT AND DIDN"T DEFEND HIM. We had evidence. (Text message, pictures, videos, show cause) he didn't even bother to bring it up in court. So pretty much WE lost over a GREAT LUMP SUM money of him NOT doing not his job. So now my son is losing time with his daughter/granddaughter life. As a family we were VERY UPSET. And the sad thing about it, Mr. Frank told my son, so I guess you are going to fired me. So that tells us he didn't care if my son didn't win his case. He was ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! And that was wrong. So now we are looking into another lawyer who will do the job and do right by my son.

Hired Mr. Frank for a modification to spousal support. It's been year and to date, Mr. Frank has failed to find out any important information like how much my estranged spouse makes for one, file any motion with court, is not very good at returning phone calls or emails regarding the case or what he has done in regards of said case. And now he is asking to be dismissed from said case. Achieving little to nothing must be exhausting. So its been a total waste of time and finances to get nothing but sand slipping threw your hands. I am sure I will do better just filing the paperwork on my own and going to court by myself. At least I know I can finish what I start and not have wonder how long before I hear back from a MIA attorney. I wish I would have just paid myself for all the work.

First, let me start by saying that the I hired this attorney to assist me with a speeding ticket in Dinwiddle, VA. John stated that he was confident that he could get the ticket dismissed, but after going to court told me that he could not get the ticket dismissed only reduced. I only spoke with John a few times, and I didn't feel I had been thoroughly informed of the status of my case. I was required to take an online driving school class, at which time I submitted my certificate of completion to John's office and never heard back from them again. I also had an awkward experience in calling his office and speaking with an extremely unprofessional staff member who swore she spoke with me before on some random issue, and was quite irate. Based on my experiences, I would pay more money and get better service.

Complete waste of money, almost cost me the most important piece of my life (my children). I would literally do EVERYTHING for the case. EVERYTHING. All she had to do was present it and she couldn't even do that right. I had to fire her mid court hearing it was that bad and the judge wouldn't let me speak because "I hired an attorney to speak for me" The ONLY positive thing I can say about working with her is that I became so knowledgeable and good at the legal system, I ended up getting a scholarship to attend law school.

I have dealt with damages from, trying to get rid of and be done with, this sorry excuse of an attorney. She was highly unprofessional during my few dealings with her, discussing other cases by name in front of me, using profanity during meetings, NEVER returning calls herself...the list goes on. I received multiple calls from her office during which I was told I needed to track down and obtain this document or the other. I would also be instructed that *I* needed to pay for however many copies of each that she required (even though they would have been free had her office done so) and then bring them into her. If it wasn't documents she wanted, it was for me to make phone calls to various professionals. Now, I'm fairly sure that the hard come by cash I had paid her was so that SHE would be handling all this. All said and done, there was not one single thing she did in any legal capacity to further my case AT ALL. In all truth I feel her actions, or I should say, her lack of appropriate action, ANY action, caused significant damage to the incredibly important matter I entrusted her with.

Received guardianship over my daughter through Mr Brickhouse about 6 months ago. At first he was really nice, but after a while he got upset for me for doing or not doing things I did not know because he didn’t tell me, and I’m not a legal expert. Then he pretty much stopped talking to me. The guardianship paperwork I have was never fully explained to me. It has a lot of difficulties, for example when my daughter started receiving disability payments recently the bank has rejected this guardianship/conservator paperwork, and the checks are not able to be negotiated with the current document. The checks are made out to me “for my daughter “ . The bank referred to the language as ‘vague” in the guardianship paperwork, and now this money I need for my daughter cannot be accessed as the checks cannot be deposited into an account in her name because I am the payee, and cannot be deposited into my bank because the guardianship language is “too vague” per the bank. The only benefit from this guardianship paperwork was my ability to retain legal counsel on her behalf. I was not able to admit her to a hospital even though the paperwork says I can. Again, the hospital did not find the language in the guardianship sufficient to do so.

Elizabeth Wildhack updated my estate documents in 2012. When I needed them updated again in 2021, I called her office. I was told by the receptionist that I just needed to email Elizabeth and she would make the changes, basically fill-in-the-blanks. I asked for a phone call from Elizabeth to discuss issues and ask questions. The receptionist again told me that could all be done via email. I insisted on a phone call. Elizabeth called me a day later. Was very professional and polite. I emailed her with changes. After about 10 days, I didn't hear back from her so I called and left a message. She emailed back (no phone call) and said she had accidentally deleted my email. She answered my questions. I emailed later with the specific changes. I NEVER HEARD BACK FROM HER. It has been four weeks. I left messages on her voicemail, left messages with the receptionist, and emailed, all multiple times. She never responded. I have moved on to another law firm. Attorneys are a dime a dozen. Find one that is responsive, professional, thorough, helpful. Elizabeth Wildhack is NONE of these things.

After evidence required by discovery was shared by the arresting department Mr. Jack’s proceeded to inform me of my guilt and what the judge would sentence me possibly without even looking at or considering the discovery evidence. He neglected to even watch my arrest or what transpired on the video provided to my disappointment. Mr. Jack’s did not want to do the job for which I hired him and was just going through the motions to collect the money I paid him for defense. I suggest hiring an attorney that will defend you instead of one who just agrees with the prosecution to push you through the system.

He was appointed by the state of VA to take care of my brother's affairs. The reason for this is my brother stopped all contact with the family back in the 70s. I found out about my brother's death about 2 months after he died, so I sent away for his death certificate. My bother had a military funeral. Even though Mr. Labowitz had my brother's discharge be had corporal placed on the head stone, when in fact he was a Staff Sargent. After I received the death certificate contacted Mr. Labowitz and he sent me some of my brother's stuff among the person property was my bother's discharge papers, so I was able to contact Quantico National Cemetery and get the correct title placed on his stone. I had to contact Mr. Lebowitz again to ask for the flag that was used for my brother's funeral, his response was "Didn't think you wanted that" Along with the flag I was also sent his birth certificate which had our parent's name listed. The death certificate said parents unknown. I wrote to the state of VA to add their names and was told that that could only be done buy a court order. I wrote Mr. Labowitz and asked why he didn't provide the parents information. His response was "I do not believe that I have the responsibility to add your parents’ names to the certificate simply because we had the birth certificate and the person on my staff who provided the information to the funeral home did not connect the two documents." He also suggested I hire a lawyer who can do this for $1600. So he thinks I should pay $1600 for something he neglected to do. What ever the state paid him it was too much.

We lived in England for the duration of our dealings with Mr K E Labowitz of Dingman Labowitz PC, Alexandria, VA which hindered communication somewhat but shouldn't have been a problem with a dedicated counsel. Mr Labowitz. had been engaged by the executor of a will as the trustee of a testamentary trust left to our infant son: “to pay for his future university education”. It was a sad, bad experience for us: Mr Labowitz oversaw a loss in wealth of ~63% and his failure to perform his duties as per the published directives has left a lot of questions. For starters, the lawyer-client relationship begins with a discussion of fees, yet Mr Labowitz never discussed his fees with us even though the Virginia Bar has published instructions on this subject. The lawyer's fee shall be adequately explained to the client. When the lawyer has not regularly represented the client, the amount, basis or rate of the fee shall be communicated to the client, preferably in writing, before or within a reasonable time after commencing the representation. Amongst a vast (sic) amount of correspondence between Mr Labowitz, the Virginia Bar, and me, but completely out of the blue, Mr Labowitz averred that he had discussed his fees with me via a phone call. (This would have required an international call involving a 5 hour local time difference.) Sending a document via email or mail would have been more efficient and would have provided hardcopy reference material. Even more worrying is the fact that I have never spoken to Mr Labowitz. (It is not simply the case that I have forgotten the conversation he refers to. People like us don’t receive calls from American attorneys and it would have been a memorable event.) Mr Labowitz may have been confusing me with another of his international clients. Nevertheless I asked him to check his records for the call details. He declined but the fact remains that we never knew what fees were deducted from the trust. The VA Bar saw no need to query the differences between our versions, accepting the statement of their member. Considering its stated purpose the trust appeared a natural candidate for investing in safe, long-term instruments for the 15 years of its lifetime yet it matured with a loss of ~63%, (down from $114k to $43K). We cannot determine how this loss came about because we never received monthly statements from the trustee or the account manager at Wells Fargo despite several requests for them over the years. We were also unable to get answers about tax paid (even though the trust never turned a profit) as well as several other things usually of interest to an owner of managed investments. Mr Labowitz moved the trust to a different financial institution for its final year. He never told us about the move and when we found out he would not explain why he made it. It made no sense considering the trust was severely depleted. I made a formal complaint to the VA Bar which resisted accepting it but eventually put it on the docket and he was exonerated; things were recorded which simply hadn't happened. This was very disappointing; all the research I had done was simply ignored.

I find this attorney, Shirley A. Norman-Taylor extremely unethical. She was appointed to me, I contacted her, shared details about my case that if used against me could be detrimental to the outcome of my situation. She stated she had no time to take on new cases, I told her I would wait until she could, instead she took my-out-of-state estranged brother as a client who is opposing me on a family matter. My entire family will not speak to my brother and his girlfriend who are out to financially gain out of a pandemic crises I found myself in. This attorney took them on as new clients completely throwing me under the bus. Family lawyers are already shady characters, why choose this dishonest one? She holds no loyalty and is lacking with integrity and is far from trust-worthy. I’ve asked her to remove herself in form of email, attorneys have asked her to remove herself and she refuses. Save yourself the future horror I’m about to face in court. I filed a bar complaint on her this morning. She won’t be able to erase that. My family memebr and I sought out the services of Mike Massey. This was a terrible decision. My family member was charged with the possession of child pornography. My family member was an idiot with computers and had a porn addiction, however it was NOT with child porn. Long story-short, my family member was using a program, like Kazaa, on his computer to download loads of porn. The user is unable to really know what they are downloading until they have it and open up the video to view it. By this time, you have commited a crime already especially if you are caught with the hot potato. The family member and I disclosed this information to Mike Massey. He came across as a Savior that would invest his time, efforts, and energy in a respectful way to prove the innocence of my family member to this horrible misunderstanding. Yes, my family member did have a porn problem and needed help, but the pron problem that he had was with LEGAL porn! Although, many times a begged and pleaded with Mr. Massey and even shared my outright disgust for his lack of presentation of the truth, he strong armed my family member and I into plead guilty to these horrible charges. I say strongarmed us because he manipulated us be saying to trust him and his council. Since he was the one with the law degree, we felt like we should go against our gut feelings AND the truth and have my family member do as Mike guided and pleaded guilty versus going in and explaining that my family member ignorantly downloaded porn in bulk and have zero clue what it truly was that he was downloading. My family member is sitting in jail with 2 years to pull and a lifetime status as a sex offender to which is not justice. If we could do it all over again, we would NOT choose his services again. After Mike received our money, his tune changed, he bbecame less involved, took forever to respond to phone calls, and was ultimately very wrong with his unwise council. Take it from us, choose someone else ..or sticm with a Public Defender!

Unreliable, bad communication, misleading, over charge, loses easy cases, unprepared for hearing, and strategically sabotages your case if she doesn't side with you or if you fire her. Well connected which can work for you or against you in the courts. Definitely find a lawyer who will not waste your time or money.

We had previously retained another lawyer in the firm who has since retired. Obtained Jeanette Ojeda's email address from her receptionist and received an automated reply that she would be out of the office for one more day. Waited one more week for a reply. Nothing. Called the office again to verify that she was practicing and was seeing clients. Receptionist sent her a note with my contact information. Sent a second email detailing my need for a contract review and even offered a retainer if that were a concern. No response. How difficult would it have been to say "I'm busy and can't help"?

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
