Attorney Mary Carmen helped me a lot on those days I needed help regarding my citenship. She is very compassionate that will ease your mind. She is very professional as what the saying goes: you got what you paid for. And most importantly she will not leave you in the air she is always available if you have question. Have to be diligent with this organization. You may get positive results. I wouldn't file complaints over minor disputes with an attorney. If the attorney is not working out request the attorney to take their fee and send the remainder back. Not worth paying an attorney that is not interested in defending your rights and adequately representing your side.

I hired Attorney Madera back in 2006 to battle my Child Support/Child Custody case. He was extremely kind and helpful during a very stressful time. Attorney Madera and his staff (Karina) were great at helping guide me through foreign territory when it would have been very easy to feel lost throughout the process. My case was difficult and sometimes very emotional. Although the outcome was not 100% in my favor, Attorney Madera ensured it was a fair one in court which is more than I could have asked for. I appreciate him and his staff for the service he provided and would highly recommend his firm for your legal needs. He's an excellent attorney who actually cares.

I have to agree with all the other 1 star reviews posted here. He charges high fees but doesn't advocate for his client. He is more aggressive with his own client than with OC. Did nothing for me to speak of but did collect lots of $$. I have a really hard time believing the 5 star reviews are legit. Maybe he had friends and family write those. And after speaking to others, people laugh when I bring up his name, saying do not use this guy.

I hired this firm some time ago for a child visitation case and was thoroughly disappointed. The case went on for apx 18 months and all I got out of it was lighter pockets. I spent close to $10,000 including flights, appearances bogus fees, and three different attorneys the firm appointed and ended up with NOTHING!!!! I PERSONALLY do not recommend this attorney or his firm. Save your money and if forced to go with this firm, represent yourself!

I had the opportunity to hire Matthew Katz and his team a few years back. I went to meet with him at his office with a legal matter that I was not sure how to handle. Turned out that Matthew not only provided me with peace of mind in the short term but also found an answer to my legal situation. After reviewing the terms and conditions to hire his firm, I felt comfortable working with him and his team so I hired them. I ended up with a great outcome as Katz Law provided me with great counsel that allowed me to resolve my legal matter in a very efficient way. Kuddos to Matthew and his team for providing exceptional customer experience and for doing everything in their power to ensure positive results!!! If you are in need of a lawyer who truly cares about their clients, go and see Matt!

I felt like I was doing all my own legal work. This man did NOT know what he was doing and charged me up the wall. He came to court unprepared consistantly. I told him I was having surgery and NOT to schedule anything for me during that month of my recuperation, yet he did. I was in contempt of court, and he blamed me for it, all along charging me every step of the way. I spent a fortune and got negative results 75% of the time. Finally I hired someone else who did a MUCH better job. I was amazing to see how a real attorney works.

I would never recommend or hire this lawyer or staff, he does not communicate with his clients his secretary does all the work, he plays everything by ear to drag out your case to keep collecting money from you. For a misdemeanor dui case it’s taking him almost over a year to settle and with no incriminating edivence on behalf. He also withheld my medical records to drag out the case so he can keep getting a continuance on my case to collect more money. When I did finally talked to him he was very rude, unprofessional, gets very frustrated and talks over you when your trying to ask questions or wondering about my case. I’ve got gun charges dropped in criminal court and this guy is a joke. He is not a real dui lawyer he will not defend you or file any motions because he works with the states attorney. In his defense he blames Covid. Save your money hire a real dui lawyer. He says been doing this for over 40 years but no reviews. And he has a very shady office on the south side of Chicago, which is empty and very unprofessional. This guy is a joke. Save your time and money again, and your freedom if that’s at stake.

Lacks basic reasoning and logical skills to be qualified as an administrative law judge. Does not listen nor comprehend the simplest of facts. While my ticket was given to me with in the legal 24 hour parking permit time frame, the judge based my case on when I collected my evidence. This is the equivalence of throwing out a defendants evidence because his attorney was not at the scene of the crime. The fact that I took a few days to review the ticket and photograph that the parking permit was valid does not change the fact that I was ticketed wrongly. To make matters worse the ticket should have been thrown out because the meter-maid failed to take legible photograph of my parking permit, which in itself makes disqualifies the evidence of the case. This judge lacks the temperament and basic skills to be a judge of any type.

I have no opinion yet about Rodney W. Stewart. I have not yet met him, or spoken to him. He is going to represent my daughter, and I have read the initial letters he sent to my daughter about that, and it is only in that sense that I can truthfully say that I have "consulted" with him. I am reacting solely to the other review (as of this writing, there is only one other review). It has got to be ironic. It is so extreme in its language that it couldn't even be a fake review, planted by one of Mr Stewart's friends, or someone in his family. A fake review would not use that language, because when you say things so extreme, you lose all credibility. It must have been posted as a joke. I wish I could meet the person who posted it, so I could understand the story behind it. I'm Jay Shachter, by the way,

I hired Mr. Muller for a. Divorce. His office is not computerized for client discovery which is standard these days. When he needed a document it took $600 of associate billing time to find it. His billings are very high because he has his office staff print out his email and put it on his desk. He dictates a reply that the staff then types and sends. He bills this all at his hourly rate. He did not prepare pre-trial memos on a timely basis and did not return phone calls. Although he promised he would make sure my ex would be there, he did not get my now ex to appear in court when mandatory, but Mr. Muller and I were there so I was billed for the completely wasted appearance. So a new pre-trial conference had to be petitioned for and set-up, all of which was billable.

Michelle completed my divorce case with such diligence and promptness. She never failed to return a phone call or email. I appeared numerous times in court for various hearings, and I was always floured with her directness and composure at the bench. Michelle was not out to "screw" my ex-husband or hurt anyone; she weighed my options for me and my children, and conversed with the opposing attorney in regard to the same. I could not have been happier with the outcome of my case, and I have zealously referred her firm to anyone I have come across thus far in need.

For someone who charges such ridiculously high hourly rates, I expected a lot more. Alyssa was overly emotional, did not respond to communications in a timely manner, and she refused to accept responsibility for a mistake she made with my case. When I asked for a billing credit for the time she spent on a motion that was completely unnecessary, she refused to accept responsibility and instead tried to blame it on me not remembering things accurately. She is also extremely condescending and speaks to her clients as if they are children. This is not someone who can be trusted.

I had an extremely difficult divorce situation. Child custody, drugs, fraud just to name a few. I still loved my wife and wanted the best for my kids, and the wife wanted out(new man) Ms. Mogul handled this case with the aplomb of a ballet dancer. Her knowledge of the law is uncomprable, her recommendations:(counseling, full disclosure etc) put my wife at ease to enable her to go on with her and the kids best interests while not continuing in a vindictive fashion. It was not cheap, but the scar is smaller than it would have been and best of all the kids are flourishing, and they call Alyssa sometimes. She was a godsend.

One of the worst human beings I have ever met. Please avoid his services at all costs! He will charge you an arm and leg but will do absolutely nothing on your case. We paid him close to $3,000 to type up information we gave him and send it MONTHS after it was supposed to be turned in. He would never answer any emails to keep us posted on the progress of our case and only decided to schedule a meeting once I told him I was going to report him to the bar. He changed his tune really quickly after that. After our meeting, and after warning us that we would not get any of our money back if we went with someone else's services (this was my mistake for paying him the total amount up front), we decided the only thing to do was to give him another try. Fast forward to another few of months of inactivity, my new lawyer had to warn him (AGAIN) about reporting him to the bar association before he sent material I had been asking him for months.AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

I knew I wanted her to help me because no other lawyer would connect with you the way she did for me. She has made this journey so much easier for me. She is amazing at responding to all my emails. I hired Angela for my divorce in April 2024 and would never recommend her or her law firm. Here’s why: Misrepresentation of Services: Angela assured me she could handle the creation of a quitclaim deed necessary for my divorce, stating she had done hundreds of these at her practice. However, I later discovered that her fiancé's practice, with whom she shares paralegals, actually manages these deeds. Angela’s draft of the deed incorrectly listed my ex-wife as the "grantee" and me as the "grantor," meaning I would have been giving her the condo instead of retaining it. The opposing counsel pointed out this error, which they said was common in Angela's quitclaim deeds. Angela reacted defensively, launching into a 15-minute tirade and writing a scathing email ridiculing the opposing counsel’s expertise and professionalism. Defensiveness and Unprofessionalism: Angela is the most defensive person I’ve encountered. In my experience, she never takes responsibility for her actions, instead blaming others. She also lacks professionalism and was verbally abusive to both me and the opposing counsel. When asked several times about filing the quitclaim deed, she assured me the only document needed was the signed and notarized deed. However, the County Recorder’s Office informed me that several documents were missing, preventing the deed's filing. I had to hire another lawyer to complete the process. Unwarranted Aggressiveness: My divorce was straightforward as my ex-wife and I were amicable and had agreed on asset division. Angela didn’t need to do any discovery work, and the case was resolved in about seven weeks. Despite this, Angela accused me of calling her excessively on weekends and after hours when I reached out once on a Sunday before our court hearing. When I presented invoice statements and phone records showing we never spoke outside business hours, she ignored them and told me to stop emailing her. Ethics: After the divorce, Angela’s fiancé’s office offered to file my quitclaim deed ONLY IF I promised not to write a negative review. I chose to hire new counsel instead. Angela threatened that if I wrote this review, her paralegals and office staff would respond, claiming I was abusive and defensive. In conclusion, working with Angela was the worst part of my divorce. I preferred interacting with my ex-wife over her, which shouldn’t be the case. I cannot recommend Angela to anyone.

My experience with Attorney Curtis Ross was nothing short of a nightmare. From the outset, he displayed a level of rudeness and disrespect that was utterly appalling. When I sought clarification on certain legal matters, he dismissed my concerns with the utmost arrogance, labeling my questions as "idiotic." Instead of fulfilling his role as a legal advocate, he left me to fend for myself in court, all the while painting a false picture of me as argumentative. His complete lack of support and guidance was both shocking and deeply disappointing. Save yourself the headache and avoid hiring Curtis Ross at all costs. He is an utter disgrace to the legal profession and will leave you high and dry when you need support the most.

I worked with Carol regarding my amicable divorce from my partner. We scheduled an appointment Jan 2017 and paid the consultation fee. After the appointment we shopped around, we thought their fee was a little on the high side however felt confident and safe hiring them. On Oct 2017 I hired Carol, signed the welcome letter and retainer agreement, Paid my deposit. At first they failed to credit the consultation fee, after a reminder they made the correction. The next time I heard from Carol was a month later, only because of my emails to Rachael and Susan wondering what the next step was. She stated we should be completed by the end of the year, so I waited for the next step. Finally middle Jan 2018 I sent an email, because no one followed up Iasking Carol for an update. At that point and I'm not sure why Carol waited so long but she sent out our Petition for Dissolution which we signed within 24 hours. Carol forgot our case which left us waiting another few weeks for the next step, However, Come March 2018, I'm still waiting....I called, I emailed...on March 13th Rachael responded and looked into what we are waiting for...she couldnt offer anything besides an apology but assured to me Carol would have a settlement agreement by Friday end of working day. On Friday 7pm, no word. At this point I'm at my wits end, frustrated that my case has been forgotten, on the back burner, and I have had to consistently follow up wondering what the hold up is.....I emailed Carol asked for a refund and wanted to take my business elsewhere. Finally at 9:43pm Carol sent the settlement agreement, she apologized and stated she works late on Fridays. March 27th we signed final papers, April 4th we picked a court date. Court Day: I was instructed to arrive at 9:30am, which I did, even a little early because I was nervous. At 9:30am I called the firm I was told she should be there, what are you wearing?, Carol has not arrived. I thought to myself, has she forgotten me again? I checked in with the clerk and waited. Carol arrived (9:37am), it was the longest 7 minutes of my life. When she arrived we stepped outside spoke about what to expect and went back inside. Once inside the clerk stated she needed to get something signed or stamped, I wasn't sure what she was missing but she said the clerk was being difficult and she had to run to do something. I was left sitting, waiting. When Carol returned it was my turn with the judge, everything went smoothly (hence the one star) after that, she emailed me final court documents and we finished. I'm disappointed with the organization and management of this law firm. It is unacceptable to require the client to follow up with the lawyer and keep tabs on their case. Also, its unacceptable to be late to court, I should have been given a follow up call saying "dont worry I'm running late." I understand court is an everyday event for a lawyer but for me it was a new experience and I was nervous. Amicable divorces should not take 6-7 months, I know this is true because I have an email from Carol stating we should be completed by end of 2017. (I saved all emails) We were not delayed on my end, anything she needed from us was provided within 48 hours. At first I felt confident with their abilities, in the end was greatly disappointed. Overall, when hiring this firm I would make sure you are ok with delays and being overlooked or being an after thought. Also, I would ask the firm if they has time for your case, maybe Carol was juggling more than what she could handle. I dont know. For now take a pass on hiring an attorney from this firm.

The previous reviews mostly echo my experience with Mr. Feiwell, who was opposing counsel in my case. He arrived at depositions with foot-high stacks of papers, but never seemed to know their contents. He issued demands to third parties who were never involved in the case, with no purpose I could figure except to embarrass or intimidate me. He asked questions to which he had already received answers, seeming surprised when he was told so. When he did not get the answers he wanted, he raised his voice, the only one in the room who ever did so. Once the case was settled, he resigned quickly — apparently recognizing that there was little money in it for him anymore — rather than supporting his client. I am perfectly capable of recognizing a talented opposing attorney, and would respect him, even on the other side. This is not that attorney. I hope he finds a career that takes advantage of his talents, whatever they are. Based on my experience, family law does not.

do not hire this attorney or this firm. He will sway you into paying a retainer of over $25,000 while doing the minimal work. This attorney is creative with the billing by assigning over 7 attorneys to your case. All the attorneys will do the same work eg. research, emailing, reading emails- in the end, they will not do anything for you but bury you in dept of over $200,000. This is what happened to me.

Scott Shell will raise your hopes up in making you assume he will help but only to raise your bill and drop you in the middle of trial proceedings. I would not recommend this attorney to anyone.

Do not hire. Scott overbills you by doing research and conferences with other attorneys within the same firm only to raise your bill on purpose. He fails to show up to court to present your case. He hides when he makes wrong decisions over your case. Worst mistake was hiring this attorney who put others to do his work. He is lazy and a misrepresents his clients.

If I could give no stars, I would. Still a pending case a year and a half later. I hired her for child support. It has cost me already over 10k and we have gotten no where. His attorneys changed 3 times and all.his attorneys controlled the case from the very beginning. I am a single mom and had to start representing Myself because I could no longer afford it. She didn't care. I would've lost my house if I didn't walk away. So we are still in court, have settled nothing, I have a huge bill, and now have to represent myself. Get a different attorney unless you like throwing your money away.

Divorce can be a frustrating process (and mine was no exception). Throughout it I had to fire one attorney before hiring the firm that Karen works for. My case changed when my attorney did. Karen was a steady hand in a process that is anything but. She took the time to answer all of my questions (there were many) and to discuss strategy. I always felt she was prepared, knowledgeable and willing to tell me what I sometimes did not want to hear. In the end, we ended up with a settlement that was fair. The financial portions were actually a bit more favorable than I would have settled so I was very happy with Karen's negotiation results. My bill was substantial but I can't hang that on Karen or her firm. Their fees are in-line with or even a little lower than other firms I looked into and I feel that I received first-class representation. My ex-wife and/or her firm seemed determined to draw out the process, which certainly increased the billable hours for both sides. If you are in need of a divorce attorney, I highly recommend Karen VanderMeer and Badesch Abramovitch, LLC.

My husband filed for divorce and I was served with the Petition, which as Respondent must be answered (admit, deny, neither). Karen prepared the answers without asking me what my answers were. I reviewed Karen's answers, sent her corrections, she made some, not all corrections, and sent me the Answers to review. I sent her a second time the correct answers, she made all but one and sent me the Answers for review. Karen not only charged me for preparing the initial Answers, she also charged me for advising her of the correct answers and making the corrections. Had she asked me what my answers were before answering the Petition, me sending corrections and her making the corrections would have been unnecessary. The Statement of Services I received does not include anything about her asking me to answer the Petition or me supplying her with the answers. It does include me sending corrections and her correcting the Answers.

Professionalism has decreased over time. Rarely keeps conference call appointments or returns calls. Has client to prepare documentation or research information that is not used in their case with no explanation. Often felt there was no overall strategy or continuity regarding my case.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
