Don Swanson will lie, and steal your money with very false promises, and also when your defenseless. Not the trustworthy type at all, and can not believe this guy is still representing people in our city of Fort Wayne.

Simple divorce ended up costing wayyyy more than quoted. Charges $21.50 everytime I had to asked what was going on with my case. Communication was not good. Frustrating experience. Never returns phone calls. $20 consultation fee is extremely petty. Would not recommend.

Contacted Kelly to use for my divorce attorney, she had been hired by my ex first but instead of replying to say so she didn't reply back at all. She did not check facts about her client and only assumed she was telling the truth about the facts of the case. Needs to know when her client is lying or stretching the truth. I found a better lawyer and received a fair settlement in the divorce because of it.

I had ARAG insurance so they paid this man for my services. I'm guessing since it was a guaranteed paycheck he didn't feel he had to work. This was a contested adoption. He didn't represent me in anyway. He just showed up. He let the other side walk all over me and make a fool out of me. He never objected to anything they said. He just sat there for 4 days in court. He helped ruin my families life's. He didnt even bother to call me when the judge ruled. I had to find out by cops banging down my door like a criminal and taking my grandson from me. And on top of all that my insurance paid this man 100% and today after 4 months after the worst day of my life I get a bill from him saying I owed for his PARKING TICKETS during the trial!!!!

I hired Tim for 3 years for post divorce custody. I would recommend never hiring tim. He was unprepared in court, lost the documents I gave him. He would copy documents I previously saw on the internet then bill me $1000 and claim he wrote them. When I fired him and got my file from his office, they gave me part of my file a part of someone else’s. He send inappropriate emails with no body and three word in the subject line that doesn’t make sense.

I have been to this facility on three occasions to deliver catering orders. All three times well over $200 in food. They are always extremely nice. However, it's always a hour of my time wasted for nothing they never tip and never have .. I do this full time and have for 8 years . It's completely disrespectful and discouraging. We don't make a delivery fee we strictly live off a gratuity and it clearly states that on the receipt and website. You can't buy time plain and simple and for these people to disrespect my time and money on multiple occasions has just left a sour taste in my mouth .

I have never had to hire a lawyer in my adult life. When I needed to find a lawyer within 72 hours I panicked and didn’t know what to do. I went on google and typed in best lawyers practicing family law near me. Larry among six or seven other lawyers came up. Believe it or not the reason I picked Larry is because he was the only one willing to talk to me without an appointment. I didn’t understand why a lawyer wouldn’t want a quick rundown of what you are looking for. It takes two minutes to listen and see if you are interested in representing me. Then I would make an appointment, come in, and go from there. Fortunately Larry had the same thought pattern as me and willingly spoke to me for about ten minutes. We made an appointment for the next day. I was in a very bad time bind. I had less than a week to try and win full custody of my niece. My brother passed away about 14 years ago when she was six years old of a brain aneurysm. I found out she was in a terrible situation. I’m not gonna go into details. She had to be removed from her bio mother‘s house immediately. Larry went above and beyond putting in emergency orders, asking for emergency court dates, hearings, motions, ect. He also went above and beyond doing things he wasn’t paid to do. He was on the phone with the Munster Indiana school system on a daily basis for about a week helping me get my niece registered. I cannot get her Registered without proof that I was her legal guardian. She had already missed two weeks of school while I was waiting for the judge and courts to go through the process. In the meantime Larry or his amazing secretary Stacy B. was either calling and talking to someone at the Munster high school, emailing, writing letters, verifying information, etc. They had to work miracles and jump through hoops for me to get my now adopted daughter registered in school. (Not that this is relevant to my review but trying to register a child in the Munster school system is ridiculous if the child isn’t your bio child. I had my niece living with me for years and had all the proof in the world. Since I was not her legal guardian Munster high school would not let me register her in school, even with bio mom’s permission! Even after Larry contacted them via email, phone, and chain mail, telling them/showing them proof I had a court date for guardianship and I was her legal caretaker and they still wouldn’t let me register her!) Larry got very upset at this point and filed for an emergency hearing and luckily we got it! A week later she was in school. I have already rambled a lot so I will wrap this up. Larry was very kind, considerate and caring. He went above and beyond what he was supposed to do, he made me feel very comfortable and answered all my questions. he promised he would get this done in a very short amount of time and from the first conversation until the judge granted me full guardianship it took less than two weeks. His prices are very reasonable. I can’t remember exactly how much I paid it was over $900 but under 1500for sure. I just want to add a year and a day from me receiving guardianship I legally adopted my niece and became a mother for the very first time. I still don’t feel comfortable saying that I’m a mom, but I love it until now. I had no children by choice. Thank you, Larry.

If you’re looking for a compassionate, helpful attorney- run the other way. Once I was 3 minutes late for a scheduled call and he refused to take my call. Prior to a court hearing (which I flew into Indiana to attend) he couldn’t meet to prep. Okay, I understand overlapping obligations could make meeting difficult but when I suggested a 15minute phone call instead, he oblected. The final straw came when toward the end of my divorce I owed him$500 and even after I give him thousands and had a pending settlement he refused to take any of my phone calls.

In spring 2020, I hired attorney Locke to complete some expungement petitions because out of everywhere I called, I found her assistant at the time to be very professional and responsive. There's nothing worse than spending money on an avoidant attorney. Anyway, I paid her nearly $3900 (paid up front from day 1) to file the expungements, along with the filing fee of $650. It was a lot. It was my entire spending stash for summer actually. Well, by June of 2021, she still hadn't filed a single petition. She wouldn't return my emails, and the first time she called me in months, it was after 9:30 p.m. I immediately called her back, but she always calls from a non-returnable office number. Thereafter, she simply checked out. I got super pissed one day last month and used an unknown number to call - I live in Colorado now, so they simply weren't answering my 720 numbers...but I would have a friend in Indiana call immediately after me, and they would pick up!! I essentially demanded that her assistant either file my cases or give me my over $4000 back. She assured me she would have them together by the next day because they were partly started...14 months later!!! And get this...after 14 months of ignoring a paid client, she had the audacity to fire me as a client and keep all money! In the midst of my plight, around October last year maybe, I left a super crappy review- much like this one- and after not returning my calls for months, she had the courage to call and threaten me to take it down because, of course, COVID. But rather than apologize for not even starting a single petition by that time, she actually chewed me out. She assured me that she was now on top of it, and everything would be filed within days. Again, I hired her 14 months ago. Here we are in August of 2021, and she has only drafted a single petition in one of five counties that she promised, and she still has all my money. My parents are telling me to file a case neglect complaint with the Indiana Bar, but I just wanted to get the service I paid for. What would you do if a 'prominent' Indy lawyer stole over $4000 from you? I have phone records documenting dozens of unreturned calls, all of my emails that she ignored, and even proof that I flew 1100 miles home to Indiana to provide her a single piece of paper, and she literally has never even sent me a piece of mail, a case update, or even a shred of respect. Dude, guys, this lady literally took over $4000 from me (luckily on an insured credit card) and ghosted. I've been robbed in the past, but it's usually like a Nintendo. This lady took thousands from me on a contract of guaranteed services that she absolutely did not, and still has not, completed, and then she fired me. I think that she thinks that because I'm out of state, I'll forget, or maybe that she's invincible. These are the professionals that are supposed to be protecting us, not baiting us with the promise of a service and then stealing from us! So profoundly disrespectful. Again, I can provide phone records and numerous ignored emails, as well as proof that she hasn't actually filed a single petition.

This is a message to Attorney Locke that I don't mind others seeing. I really don't know what I would do without you. You have been representing me with my custody case that has changed shape and scope over a year long process so far. I love how in the midst of all the legalities at play, you start every conversation with, "how are the kids", which lets me know you care about what I care about the most.. You are always prepared and make sure that I am prepared before we enter the courtroom. You came from a referral who had a similar positive experience and outcome. We hired Joni the better part of 5 years ago. My wife and I kept hearing horror stories from there Mother’s house and all unfortunately / fortunately ended up to be true. We had evidence 5 years ago but nothing close to where a father needed to be to gain full custody. We had all odds stacked against us. We had Joni and her advice and faith. We followed everything Joni said to a T and I can say she’s brilliant and a Godsend. We beat more odds than what I think Joni, my wife (soon to be my boys mother) could ever had imagined. It’s all do to Joni and her team Erin. They are amazing. They lead and guided from the heart and when it comes to everything we live by one simple thing... “WHAT DID JONI SAY” There’s 2 angels who looked over my kids and still care more than life itself. 1. Joni Sedberry 2. And there school counselor. Sometimes/ most times prayers are answered and Joni Sedberry is 1. And we are forever grateful...

I called and did an interview over the phone with Joni Sedberry. She sounded very nice over the phone and I set up a consultation with her. My fiancé and I went in and met with her for about an hour and went over the specifics of my case. I needed urgent action because I had two boys living with me and I was paying an exorbitant amount in child support. During the consultation joni made a very inappropriate comment to my fiancé but other than that we were set to petition for a lesser child support amount. I put down a substantial retainer. I waited a week and inquired as to where things were with the case. I was sinking financially but told to wait another week. I was told that she was having personal issues. A week later she called and i was very sympathetic to her regarding her personal issues but she became very emotional and angry with me. It was very clear to me that she all of a sudden did not seem to be advocating for me. I asked her boss Brad Banks, after explaining the situation if I could have my retainer returned to me. He only gave me a portion of this back and in the end I was back to square one starting all over again with a whole lot less money.

Well I initially had a sit down talk with Roland to see about my case. I decided to pay him in full. A little over $2,800. It was to cover two hearings. He canceled two of my hearings and did not inform me. I showed up to these court dates because of this. Left confused. He had canceled so late at night the night before my hearings that I was still on the paper list of people to have hearings that day so everyone at the court house was confused and eventually my lawyer finally got back to my message of why I’m here and no one else is. He failed to contact me at all. Never met with me to collect evidence or go through my case. Never did his own research for my case. I have messages upon messages between us where I would try to contact him and he would say “I’ll call you in 3 days.” Yet to be met with no contact for a month. I asked him to file a petition to take my daughter to Texas on vacation. Signed the documents for him to never file the petition as supposed to. Then met with “I’m sorry, I dropped the ball on that one.” She was extremely upset she couldn’t go. We all were. Since he kept not doing his job he decided to give me a free hearing in all of this. Via phone convo sadly so no proof on that one. But our gmail convo speaks for itself on how awful he was to deal with the ENTIRE time. Now my case is over. He was supposed to send me a document to sign and also send the fathers and I’s agreements made in court to me and also give me the information I need to pay child support. I emailed him on this topic and he told me to wait 10 days. I received a letter a week ago telling me he is dropping me as a client. Yet, never got me ANY of the information I need. For anything. Now I’m left not knowing how to pay my child support or exactly all the details on my agreement. Now I’m left not knowing what holidays I get my daughter or anything at all. He refuses to answer my calls or texts with questions about this information that I need. I have filed a formal complaint.

Christine was very efficient for me. My ex did everything he could to make things difficult but she was somehow able to get him to come to the final result that I was happy with. She was truthful with me-both positive and negative (when I needed it). She promptly (quicker than I expected) responded to my questions and issues about the divorce and helped me through this difficult time. When I worked with her face to face I was absolutely amazed at how quickly she was able to work and figure things out. Our financial situation was complicated and she sure knew how to work those numbers and FAST. My money was well spent and I have even had to hire her again a few months ago because my ex was in contempt of court. She is absolutely fabulous. I would hire her again. I first hired her in January of 2010.

Worse than useless. This attorney has to consistently be reminded of points of the case, issues that have been discussed, concerns that (he claims to understand & agree with) yet when it's time to file anything with the Court the entire scenario turns into groundhog's day. Follow up is less than sub-par. Does not file motions with the Court when he specifically says he will within a certain timeframe, then when questioned on the status there are a lot of ???? (i.e. deer in head light moments.) Also, repeated excuses as to delays of case or follow up because of 'sickness', personal family issues, under the weather, attorney for other party is 'non-responsive', etc etc etc. There are no words to adequately detail how completely incompetent this individual is with regards to representing the interests of his clients.

Bryan made the experience very pleasurable, considering. Moreover, Bryan was able to help us evaluate our small businesses and how estate planning is an important part of the process. Bryan provided us a concierge experience and our family will certainly be using his services again in the future.

I would highly urge anyone who is looking for a divorce attorney to look elsewhere. Perhaps she has been good with some, but she definitely does not make you feel that she is on your side when the opposing counsel is a friend or former working colleague. She made my divorce an even bigger nightmare then it already was. During the entire time, she made me feel as though I was up against two attorneys, and had no one on my side. She was very impatient and catty much of the time. I had caught her in more than one lie to me, and she was completely disrespectful in person and an emails. She urged me to do things that were not in my best interest, and then became very agitated with me when I took a different stand. Quite frankly, I think she gets paid more than she is worth. I ended up terminating her and moving to a different law firm who actually did have my best interest at heart.

I initially consulted with Heidi on a child support matter. She handled my case very professionally and was able to negotiate a quick resolution. I have since returned to Heidi multiple times for various issues, including a prenuptial agreement and step-parent adoption. I recommend Heidi to anyone looking for an experienced and knowledgeable attorney.

Ms. Mullins was extremely professional and helpful when I went to her for a legal issue. She knows what she is doing, she gets it done quickly and without any delays. I hired her to write my Will. It was done without any mistakes and the cost was very reasonable. I would go to Ms. Mullins at any time and will definitely use her in the future. I went to her because she was highly recommended and I completely agree with this assessment. If you need legal work that is prompt, professional, and accurate, you need to use Ms. Mullins.

You know when you get accused of something you did not do you still need a lawyer. I was arrested on a criminal case . The police were all over me trying to prove their case. Nothing I could say would convince them I didn't do it. Finally they charged me with 4 charges related to the incident they said I was involved in. I went to 3 lawyers and they were all in the 20 to 30,000 range I had heard of this lawyer from one of my friends. I called Dylan and explained my situation and the charges. I went to his office and had a consultation. He explained what he would do and the costs involved. I hired him at a reasonable cost considerate of the types of charges. After hiring Dylan he took charge and did everything he could to help me. He helped me piece together my actions the day of the incident , had his PI go out and interview witnesses , took depositions , and prepared a defense case for me. As it ended up all charges were dropped against me because of Dylan and his expert team I highly recommend him to anyone in need of a good attorney.

Mason Archie, II served as a 2024 Summer Associate and was wrongfully terminated. The firm has been in existence for over 150 years and attempted to make their first Native American/Black/Latino hire. Their reasoning was that Mason needs "help". This was after Mason requested to attend the NBA National Convention in Las Vegas. The firm approved Mason's work and school schedule, then went on to terminate him for the same scenario that was approved. A civil suit will be filed against CCHA for wrongful termination.

Mr. Bruce Bitner incorrectly filed my father's taxes in 2022 after he sold his local Noblesville business after 40 years. My hard working father hired Mr. Bitner to file his taxes, and he reported my dad's business proceeds as capitol gains, thus costing my father thousands of dollars in taxes and hours of his own time getting he and my mom's back pay from social security. When my dad called him out on his error, he insisted he filed it correctly. My dad hired a local accountant for $300 who refiled it CORRECTLY and he got the thousands of dollars owed him in overpaid taxes from both federal and state government. Money he never would have received had be not been more knowledgeable then the attorney he hired. But my father still had to spend hours of his own time getting their social security benefits back to what they were supposed to be due to this gross error. My mother and father got thousands refunded from both the federal and state governments as a result of Mr. Bitner's incompetence and refusal to acknowledge that he made a costly error. My dad has the records (and refunds) to prove it. When he told Mr. Bitner that the local accountant filed it correctly and he got refunds, Mr. Bitner said, "well I could have done that." Good Lord. Does his arrogance know no bounds? He wouldn't even acknowledge to my father that he made a gross error in the first place. When my dad asked for his fees paid to Mr. Bitner to be refunded (plus interest), Brucey actually said, "didn't the government pay you interest?" Degrees do not make people smart, competent nor compassionate. Mr. Bitner now refuses to talk to my father or return repeated phone calls. It's been months. My dad has lost the enjoyment of the almost $3000 they charged him plus all my dad's time and loss of enjoyment of the money he earned by changing tires and towing vehicles for 40 years. My dad and mom are known to many locally in Noblesville as generous, kind, hard-working people. It breaks my heart to see them treated with such disregard by those that are in a position to do financial harm. They both grew up extremely poor and clawed their way to success. My dad retired as a truck driver at 50 years old and bought a Shell franchise. He ran it as Shell gas and service station and later McMillan's Towing and Auto Care. He didn't retire until he was 85 years old. He is now 88. A proud army veteran. And smarter than Mr. Bitner, because if it weren't for him knowing the difference, my mom and dad would be out thousands of dollars and none the wiser. He and my mom have been married for 65 years. It breaks my heart to hear that a local attorney is treating my father this way. My dad had to spend hours on the phone to get his social security benefits restored after Mr. Bitner's incompetence. Please think again before hiring Mr. Bitner or those who think he's worthy of a partnership. God bless people like my parents: honest, hard working, people who treated their hundreds of customers over the years honestly and fairly. I know this rambles a bit, but anyone reading this knows the love a daughter has for her parents. Sincerely, Debbie McMillan Mason

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
