Wow. Extremely bright while extremely sensitive to my extremely complicated situation. I’d give 10 stars if Avvo didn’t max the most at 5. After meeting with this attny, I felt for the first time after 3 years of abuse, that I will finally be ok. Ive come across no attorney that could handle my abuser or understand his covert tactics better than Victoria. She really listens and knows how to make sense of what a battered distressed woman is unable but trying to say. Beyond the best out there when it comes to combining intelligence, compassion and organization. There’s no one out there like Victoria. She’s going to make a huge positive difference in the world of violence. My gut is usually right, by now. Mark my words.

My case was extremely complex with a lot of history that needed thoroughly understood. Effie was patient, listened to all of the details, was kind and compassionate. She was dedicated to getting the result that I wanted and needed and came up with creative ways to solve my issue. Effie respectfully helped me understand the court process that was ahead of us and gave me peace of mind during a very stressful time. In court she was prepared, quick-thinking and extremely professional. Because of her hard work, I received the outcome I wanted and that allowed me to be able to move forward with my life. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Effie Alexander.

During my miserable divorce, I spent a great deal of time with Michael. I found him to be VERY impressive. He in a "no nonsense" kind of guy who truly acted in my best interest all of the time. In the 4 plus years we spent together, he NEVER put me on a loser or lead me down a dark path. I have and would suggest him to anyone who needs representation. He was always fair and considerate of my situation. The divorce process can be treacherous but Michael is not an alarmist and was never unprepared or caught off guard. He is perhaps one of the smartest men I know. I hope I never have to use him again in the future!

Attorney Odennell is representing me in several different civil and criminal matters. I have no criminal record what so ever and am very lost when it comes to the Commonwealth’s corrupt court system. O’Dennell has been extremely compassionate, understanding and very much helpful. After being in and out of the courtroom for the last year and a half I’m very confident Attorney O’Dennell has exactly what I’ve needed and what it takes to prove who really is the innocent person being humiliated by the entire other party involved and very same people that are giving the opportunity to protect us and our families. His expertise, knowledge and overall whole demeanor is really so much more then our small town courthouse made completely out of a bunch of people that we call nobodys. Evil hateful narcissist people that were given a degree, but couldnt even respect themselves.

I have dealt with Joe Savoca and his law firm for many years and have received great professional service for all of my legal needs. Joe’s service is top of the line and I never questioned any situations we entered during my (2) divorce cases and (1) custody case. I felt very comfortable and secure putting the custody of my daughter in Joe’s hands as I knew he would obtain the best conditions he would be able to achieve in the PA court system. I have recommended Joe and his firm to all of my family members and many of my friends as I have respect for the honesty and quality of service he provides.

Reading the 2 reviews listed, I wonder if they had the same attorney! I guess all divorces are painful and mine was not an exception but he handled my divorce with compassion, dignity and objectivity. He was more like a trusted adviser rather than a lawyer, always explaining my options and possible outcomes. He's not a "killer shark" - he's more like a cool headed individual but I always knew he was in there fighting for me. My ex hired a big city lawyer from Philadelphia and she paid through the nose for her services. Mike was there when I needed him and in the end I paid a fraction of what my ex paid in legal fees.

In 2011, I had to file for bankruptcy. I called Chad Julius. During our first meeting, he explained the process and what I needed to do. At one point I was starting to feel scared and nervous. Chad told me I should feel relieved. His instructions were: tell my creditors I was filing bankruptcy. Give them his information. Call him when they called me. When I told one of my creditors about my filing they were so furious I became upset. When I called Chad I was severely shaking. He told me not to worry about it (things got easier as time went on). If I had to leave a message Chad got back to me in a timely manner. Chad Julius was there every step of the way.

Mark has been at every hearing thoroughly prepared. He has not let me down and even used a day he was supposed to be on vacation to represent me at a hearing that was scheduled rather abruptly. Ms. Santiago is MY attorney life! I am a retired US Marine, and in the Corps we thrive in achieving the MISSION by using a cluster of leadership skill sets unique to the US Marine Corps. I believe with all of my heart, Ms. Santiago is a true leader in providing the best legal services for her clients. She is a great listener....."have a seat an d relax" she told me when I first entered her office stressed out about my 20 year old situation. Once she listened to my story and reviewed my documentation; I could see on her face she had an idea of how to approach my case. She explained to me her what her initial plan would be. When I left her office (PA case); and drove 900 miles back to my home in Alabama; I felt in my heart I was in good hands. After a full year (6/13 to 6/14) of probing into what I think is a "psychotic child support system in PA"; she was able to resolve my case; get my passport reinstated, block attempts by others to freeze my assets while my case was before a judge and reduce my payments. In 12/14, someone in that "psychotic child support system" entered another asset freeze on my account while I am out of country in the Philippines(10,000 miles away). I emailed Ms. Santiago of this; and she diligently and professionally" resolved the situation for me. In closing, I want to thank Ms. Santiago for the hard work and time she put into helping this old Leatherneck. You are a true champion of your craft....the tip of the legal defense spear. I salute you for " A JOB WELL DONE!" Semper Fi

I have battled through a very painful custody marathon and have had 2 different attorneys before I reached out to Attorney Jeff Kulick. He was extremely patient, understanding, and knowledgable. He went into details of piles of my case record and was able to come up with strategies and invaluable advice... In the end, I won the primary custody of my daughter after this 5 year long journey with Attorney Kulick's help. For that, we are both forever grateful. He continues to provide his assistance to protect my and my daughter's rights with reasonable fees. Highly recommend him!

I hired Mr. Caruso to represent me in Family Court on two different occasions, and received favorable results both times. He represented me in a 2 year custody battle and got exactly what I was seeking...Joint custody of my kids. I opted to represent myself at the end, but no way to i get that result without the representation of Joseph Caruso. If you're looking for an attorney who sugar coats things and just tells you what you want to hear, Mr. Caruso isn't for you. However, if you want honest answers and proactive solutions to challenges you might face in court, he will deliver. I'd rather hear challenging news in a lawyer's office where I can address them, then in a courtroom from a judge. If you have want a no nonsense family attorney, give Mr. Caruso a call.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
