Anita was very friendly and accommodating at initial contact when we were looking for an attorney. She spent a lot of time getting specifics of the case from us, and was very patient and open. However, after we signed the contract with Anita, we never heard from her with any updates on the case. We signed 2 months ago, and since then we made about 10 inquires to find out where the case stands (fax, e-mail, text, phone). None of the calls or inquiries has been returned to date. I'm giving Anita the benefit of 2 starts just based on the pleasant initial interaction, and will update my review as the case progresses. If you are searching for a workers compensation attorney, think hard whether you really need one. Hiring an attorney prevents you from contacting the clerk who handles your claim for an insurance company directly. Anita seemed a lot nicer and came across as easy to work with compared with someone else we had met for this case, however based on complete lack of response we may have made the wrong choice hiring her.

I have not been worried about a quick settlement. Fast money will not replace what a competent attorney will do for you. If you are looking for the best work comp Attorney Anita is your best option. Anita will have your best interest in mind. The two people I trust in this mess are the Doctor and Anita Decarlo

Mr. Matthew did get a "failure to appear" warrant against me dismissed. Although this took much longer than he originally told me it would take when I retained his services and still all the work I needed done was not completed. He failed to have the case transferred from the Illinois court to the Tennessee court where I currently live. My attorney in Tennessee and I have called, emailed his office several times and we have yet to receive a satisfactory response and/or any response at all between the two of us. My Tennessee lawyer left an email saying if you can't transfer the case, give us a referral for someone who can and they haven't even done that. In the meantime I have to deal with an abusive, mentally unstable ex-husband popping up at my daughter's school and our church frightening her because the state we live in doesn't have jurisdiction over the custody case because Mr. Abraham and his law partner Mr. Drnovsek have not done what I requested by transferring the case to the Tennessee court. I originally retained their firm back in June 2015 and nearly a year later everything still isn't resolved.

My experience with Attorney Curtis Ross was nothing short of a nightmare. From the outset, he displayed a level of rudeness and disrespect that was utterly appalling. When I sought clarification on certain legal matters, he dismissed my concerns with the utmost arrogance, labeling my questions as "idiotic." Instead of fulfilling his role as a legal advocate, he left me to fend for myself in court, all the while painting a false picture of me as argumentative. His complete lack of support and guidance was both shocking and deeply disappointing. Save yourself the headache and avoid hiring Curtis Ross at all costs. He is an utter disgrace to the legal profession and will leave you high and dry when you need support the most.

He loves to celebrate every holiday and disappear days before court. Do you want him to prepare before court? Do you want to be prepped before court? If the answer is "no" pay his $5,000 retainer and $375.00 an hour.

If I could give her a 0 I would because 1 star is far too nice. Please do not use this lady. The prior review is dead on. I had a car accident in 2014 where my car was completely damaged and I suffered injuries. I was referred to this lawyer and it has been the biggest mistake of my life using her firm. Every time I would call to check on the status of my case she would always answer in short and in a rush as if I was bothering her. Not once did she call me with updates, only to cancel appointments the day before after I’d already taken time off work. This happened three times. After a year I was finally called in to do a deposition in which when I arrived she was not there and had her assistant do it for her. He prepared me for the deposition but no follow up to see what was the results. I had to call back into her office where her secretary always says she with a client. The next step was aubutration. After two cancelled dates I came to her office and was not acknowledged by her for atleast an hour even though she seen me waiting. Then when she finally addressed me she said her assistant will take me to aubutration. I was told we were seekin 15000 dollars. I won but somehow was only awarded 2500.00 which was far less than what I paid to repair my vehicle. Again I called her a few weeks later only to be told that if I wasn’t happy with the order and wanted to go to court I would have to PAY HER and within that week. She is a collect pay after you win case type lawyer. So basically I was forced to settle for that. Here it is February 02,2018 and I still have not received a check. Her secretary keeps telling me that the other lawyer has not called her back. I’m so sick of dealing with this lady and I advise you to seek someone else! She is horrible!! Jazmine

I had a case with Brustin & Lundblad and as the case progressed so did the incompetence. His office staff did not seem to know how cases are litigated. I also had to call numerous times to get a callback. Horrible service.

Over a five year period I was assigned five different attorneys at this firm. It was difficult to get any of them to return my calls or advise me. When they discovered that the truck driver who hit me had a $500000.00 policy limit they lost even more interest in my case. After years of doctors visits and physical therapy and two shoulder surgeries we finally went to court. Their trial attorney Mr. Lundblad, failed to inform the jury that my bills were still unpaid and that I had suffered for years, I wasn't even given enough to pay the medical bills. This firm didn't settle with medicare and I'm now being threatened by the government. They refuse to answer my calls and won't continue to do what they were paid 40% of the award to do. I WILL be writing the Illinois bar association and retaining a reputable attorney to get them to do the right thing.

This is the worse lawyer on Earth. Mr. Bartlomenti kept issuing continuances on my case with AT&T. My friend found it odd the case had not came to trial, we checked the court docket found the case dismissed and he took and expensive vacation to Florida. When I filed a complaint against him with the Bar, he lied. I knew they had bribed him. I knew he had sold me out so did all of my witnesses and co-workers. The person who referred him to me was even more disgusted with actions. He tried to slander me, but she knew better, all he had to was clsoe the case, even the judge Abishi Cunningham questioned his tactics.

Went in for a battery/assault situation. My neck was fractured. Told the story over the phone but was still asked to come in to speak to Leonard even so. I repeated myself AGAIN and was told that I might have a case but they weren't sure. I thought that was their job to distinctly decipher if I had a case? Guess not. Then he proceeded to tell me that because it was 2 am when this happened, it "looked bad". I didn't know he would turn up his nose at any case that wasn't 100% win-able. That's how you know he's a bad lawyer! Also was told I would receive a follow up call regarding my options, of which I never received. I don't hold many people to high standards in 2017, but lawyers should never fail in professionalism. I'm truly disappointed in the lack of communication. Somebody needs to teach them that a law office is still a business.

I had a consultation with Heidi and hired her and signed the contracts. She was very respectful in regards to my sexual assault case. She spoke kindly and was gentle with the sensitivity of the matter, taking lots of notes and my evidence seriously. I hired her officially in September and it was almost impossible to get in communication with her a few times. Her and her partner went almost 2 months without responding to my question to which I had to call the firm to get a response from her. They took from September through March, that they said was only going to take a few weeks, to get my medical records and draft a complaint. Every time I asked for an update they just kept saying a few more weeks and we'd file the complaint, which dragged on until March. I eventually received a phone call from the firm saying they didn't have the resources to handle my case and that they were dropping it after months of me waiting on them. They confirmed it was dropped because they wanted more filings against the location my sexual assault took place, and because others weren't comfortable filing they didn't want to waste their money and time on solely my case. This was my first time ever needing a lawyer for anything, as I am quite young, so I felt very betrayed and taken advantage of for my lenience and confusion on how cases are handled. Unlike her partner who never told me my case was being dropped, Heidi at least sent an email saying good luck. Months were wasted simply waiting after it took a lot of strength for me to try to pursue justice for what was done to me. She seems very talented at what she does when she takes you seriously, but my case was really messed up because of her lack of communication and commitment. I don't recommend for sexual assault cases, not sure about other personal injury matters though. It's not about the person and sensitive nature of the case but about the money.

Initially when I spoke with Mr. Muslin, I was told to call back the following business. He actually stated that my issue can be resolved with a simple phone call. When I did call back, his true character and the character of his clerk came to light. I have called his office and cell phone daily only to receive excuse after excuse about handling my time sensitive matter. He's either out of the office, on another call, or with a client. If I can call him daily, why is it difficult for him to make a call for his client? Also, the last time I did speak with him, his attitude was overwhelmingly hostile. I will continue to call, but I do not recommend him because of his rude demeanor and his total lack of a sense of urgency to handle issues for his clients. I will begin the process of filing for malpractice if he has not responded by the end of the week.

What a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Do for You

A personal injury lawyer specializes in helping individuals who have been physically or emotionally injured due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Whether you've been hurt in a car accident, suffered a slip and fall, or experienced medical malpractice, a personal injury attorney works to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries. They can help you recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related expenses.

Personal injury lawyers act as your advocate, navigating the legal system on your behalf and dealing with insurance companies to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. They understand how to handle complex legal matters and help you avoid common pitfalls.

When Should I Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

Hiring a personal injury lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where you've been harmed due to another's negligence. Some key scenarios include:

  • Severe injuries: If you've suffered significant or permanent injuries that result in substantial medical bills, a lawyer can help ensure you are fairly compensated.
  • Long-term or permanent disability: Injuries that affect your ability to work or require ongoing medical treatment are complex, and a lawyer can help estimate long-term damages.
  • Disputed liability: If the responsible party or their insurance company denies liability for your injury, a lawyer can gather evidence and advocate on your behalf.
  • Insurance company lowball offers: Insurers often try to settle personal injury claims for as little as possible. A lawyer can negotiate to get you a fair settlement.
  • Medical malpractice claims: Injuries caused by a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider due to negligence require a personal injury lawyer experienced in medical malpractice law.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances: If you've been injured due to exposure to toxins, chemicals, or dangerous substances, a lawyer can help pursue legal action.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is crucial, especially if you're unsure of the full extent of your injuries or damages.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

A personal injury lawyer provides a wide range of services to guide you through the legal process and maximize your compensation. They can:

  • Evaluate your case: A lawyer will assess the strength of your claim and determine whether you have a viable case.
  • Investigate the incident: Gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, medical records, and expert opinions is key to building a strong case.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies: Lawyers handle communications with insurance companies to ensure you receive a fair settlement and aren't taken advantage of.
  • File a lawsuit if necessary: If a fair settlement can't be reached, the lawyer can file a personal injury lawsuit on your behalf and represent you in court.
  • Help calculate damages: This includes medical expenses, lost wages, future medical needs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents: Lawyers handle all the paperwork and deadlines associated with your case, including filing motions and discovery requests.
  • Represent you at trial: If your case goes to trial, the lawyer will argue your case before a judge and jury to obtain the compensation you deserve.

How Are Personal Injury Lawyers Paid?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win your case, either through settlement or a court judgment. Here’s how it works:

  • Contingency fee percentage: The lawyer will take a percentage of the settlement or award, typically between 25% and 40%, depending on the complexity of the case and the stage at which it's resolved.
  • Costs and expenses: In addition to the contingency fee, the lawyer may deduct other costs associated with the case, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, and court costs. These expenses are often advanced by the lawyer and repaid out of the settlement.
  • No upfront payment: Since the lawyer’s fee is contingent on winning, you usually don’t pay anything upfront.

Always discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a personal injury lawyer depends on the specifics of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure. However, since most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, the amount you pay will depend on the outcome of your case. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Contingency fees: Typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award. The percentage may increase if the case goes to trial or requires an appeal.
  • Other costs: In addition to the lawyer's fee, you may be responsible for case-related expenses such as expert witness fees, medical record retrieval fees, and court costs. These are often deducted from your settlement, so you won't have to pay out of pocket.

While the cost may seem high, hiring an experienced lawyer can significantly increase the amount you recover, making it a worthwhile investment.

Top Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Before hiring a personal injury lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure you’re choosing the right representation. Here are some important questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with personal injury cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases involving similar injuries or accidents.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and what percentage they will take from any settlement or award.
  3. How long will my case take?
While it's hard to predict, a lawyer can give you an estimate based on similar cases they’ve handled.
  4. How often do you take cases to trial?
Some lawyers prefer to settle quickly, while others are more comfortable going to court if necessary.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior lawyers or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it's important to know who will be managing your claim.
  6. Do you have references from past clients?
Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into the lawyer’s effectiveness and professionalism.

How to Check the Credibility of a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible personal injury lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google reviews can provide insight into the lawyer's reputation and client satisfaction.
  • Look at their track record: Review their experience with personal injury cases, particularly how many cases they’ve successfully resolved or taken to trial.
  • Ask for references: Credible lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their work.
  • Check professional memberships: Lawyers who are members of respected organizations, like the American Association for Justice (AAJ), often have a solid reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a personal injury lawyer, prepare the following:

  • Detailed account of the accident: Write down everything you remember about the incident, including dates, times, and locations. Include any witnesses or police reports if available.
  • Medical records and bills: Bring any documentation of your injuries, treatments, and associated medical costs.
  • Insurance information: Provide your insurance details and any communication you’ve had with the other party’s insurance company.
  • Employment and income records: If your injury has impacted your ability to work, bring proof of lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
  • Photos or videos: If you have photos of the accident scene, your injuries, or property damage, bring them to your consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions to ask, including how the lawyer will handle your case and what you can expect in terms of timeline and outcome.

By preparing thoroughly for your first consultation, you’ll help the lawyer understand your case more quickly and get a better sense of your legal options.
