We are contemplating a move back to Washington state where we lived for many years. Without proper estate planning we would potentially be subject to the Washington estate tax. n our initial contacts with the firm, we clearly identified that we were residents in another state. We were instructed to provide our detailed financial picture as well as our current estate planning documents which we provided promptly and told that our information would be forwarded to the attorneys for evaluation. The following is the email response. “Thank you for filling out and returning your Questionnaire. I will forward your information to our attorneys for review. Once they have completed their review, I will be back in touch with you regarding a quote for services and the next steps for scheduling.” Well over a month went by with no word back from STIB. I finally contacted them by email requesting a status update. Within minutes, I received the following reply. “Thank you very much for contacting our firm. Unfortunately, we are not able to take on your case. Our firm does not advise out-of-state residents on tax issues. Our focus is estate planning and long term care planning.” The STIB website clearly tax issues as part of estate planning. I also found no restrictions on attorneys in Washington state providing consultation to out-of-state residents considering residency in Washington. Needless to say, I was astounded by what I consider to extremely poor communication and timely follow-up. If it is indeed not their policy to advise out-of-state residents on tax issues, I would have expected to have been informed of that policy up front thus saving us the time of compiling and sending detailed and confidential financial and estate planning information. In my opinion, this represents incompetent and totally unprofessional behavior.

I had asked Alex to prepare a number of contracts and forms for my Branding Agency http://onlinemarijuanadesign.com He completed them promptly and stayed in constant communication with us. Even after the contracts were completed, I had a few revisions to them which he made the following day without charge. He did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone!

I hired Alex to represent me on a small auto accident. I was rear-ended and the other party denied liability. Alex kept in contact and seemed to be moving the case forward for a few weeks, but suddenly dropped off the face of the Earth. I attempted to contact him for several weeks to no avail. His phone was disconnected, he didn't respond to emails, or messages sent on social networking sites. He gave no indication that he was dropping me as a client and I had to hire a new attorney to finish the case. I don't know if Alex was experiencing personal problems but he did not give me the courtesy of letting me know why he stopped working on my case or communicating. I feel poorly treated and misled. My hope is he figures out if he wants to be an attorney before taking new clients in the future and then delivers the performance he seems capable of. He nearly cost me my settlement by missing deadlines and under-performing. It's a little sad because he seemed quite capable and was recommended by an acquaintance who assured me he was a straight-shooter and hard-working.

Alex Ferguson helped with my car accident case. He kept me informed along the process and always showed willingness to answer all my questions, but most importantly, he made it clear for my safety and well-being to be the number one priority for me to concentrate on. While he handled the difficult tasks involved with car accidents, I was able to focus on my treatment and two years later closed with a settlement that took care of all costs related to the accident. Thank you Alex for your commitment to my case.

The worst lawyer you can find in Seattle, really don't waste your time or money with these people. He worked on my case for 7 years, I was married to an American citizen, he was never able to fix my status, he just stole my money. I was done with him when immigration once called me to an appointment and Bart charged me $1000 just to go go with me to the appointment and what do you think? On the day of the appointment he told me to wait for him because he was already with another client at another appointment in the same place but then it was my turn as if immigration was going to wait for him, well the fact is that I showed up alone and he never arrived at the appointment. Then I called and called his office, which are also super unprofessional, to begin with, the one who answers the phone is the wife who is not even in the office but at home, she knows absolutely nothing about your case and always acts like she does . Well that day she answered my call and told me that the lawyer Bart couldn't answer me because he had others important clients, as if he would work for me for free... I was so pissed well I explored and I fired Bart and asked him to give me my money back, the $1000 that I paid him because he was going to go with me to my appointment but he didn't go, he replied that he was only going to return $800 since he had gone to the immigration offices even if it wasn't for me. I couldn't believe how cruel he was. But I went with my case with another great lawyer, in less than 3 months she solved what Bart couldn't do in 7 years. I went to my country and in 3 months I received my green card. Please don't fall into this horrible place, they are good for nothing, the only person who does their job is Kara, his assistant. I spent more then 15,000 in 7 years and all he did was nothing You suck Bart

I’ve been working with Marlena for the last 6 months on more of an uncommon type of case. While my case is not resolved yet i am confident that we will have a favorable outcome. Marlena has maintained great communication with me since the day she took my case. She not only responds to my emails very quickly , but also answers my questions clearly. She has given me realistic expectations and i appreciate how direct she is.

Waited for over a week for someone to get back to me, had to call several times and left messages, I used them about a year ago and things went very well. Not anymore. They couldn't find any records of my case, not helpful at all. Not sure what happened with them but I waisted a week for nothing, now looking for a different law firm.

Dylana Jones of Wakefield Legal was an excellent (and triumphant) advocate for me regarding a particularly challenging DVPO case involving a narcissistic abuser with a JD. She is kind, responsive, sympathetic and genuine beyond being highly skilled and capable in many areas. 10/10 Highly recommend.

Maria worked hard on our case for injuries sustained from a car accident. It took more time as we had 2020 shut down & other things come up. But in the end we were able to settle for much more than I ever expected. She will fight hard for you… excellent attorney to have on your side!

Left us with a detailed plan. She did not follow through, with 75% of it. Never once in a year did she reach out to update our family, all contact was initiated by me. She only responds via email. In reading through all of these reviews, we did not receive the same treatment. She gives up easily.

I can’t say enough about Selby Brown from Summit Law Group. She's not just any lawyer; she's the beacon of hope you wish for when everything else seems to fall apart. I found Selby when I was at my lowest, and after a horrible experience with two other lawyers. Facing a situation with a business partner who nearly wrecked me financially and emotionally, Selby was a game-changer. What really sets Selby apart isn't just her sharp business law and litigation skills; it's her unparalleled patience and genuine care. Imagine diving into a legal battle, feeling out of depth, and then there's Selby. She didn't just guide me; she made the complex legal world accessible to me. For someone for whom English is a second language, and who finds the legal world as challenging as learning a third language, her patience and clarity was priceless. Selby took the time to meticulously explain every legal procedure and after every discussion, she followed up with an email summarizing our conversation and outlining the next steps. This might sound simple, but it was a breath of fresh air compared to my previous experiences with 2 other lawyers. Other lawyers left me in the dark, not bothering to confirm they'd received my emails or to clarify my doubts. Selby's responsiveness and dedication to keeping me in the loop were not just helpful; they were a stark contrast to what I'd faced before and immensely valuable. I can’t emphasize enough how important this was for me and helped me not fall into severe depression. Selby was also incredibly mindful of the costs involved, making every effort to minimize expenses without cutting corners on her services. Though I decided to drop the case, it wasn't a loss. Thanks to Selby, I came out of the ordeal emotionally intact, with a wealth of knowledge about our judicial system. This understanding has been instrumental in preparing me for my next venture. After this experience, I've turned to Selby and Summit Law Group for all my business-related legal needs with my new company. Selby is my first point of contact for a wide range of business law issues, from company formations to business disputes and trial litigations. What sets them apart is not just their comprehensive knowledge but also their network of specialized expertise. Whenever a situation arises that falls outside their direct scope of services, Selby ensures I’m connected with the right experts within their network. This holistic approach to legal support makes Selby and Summit Law Group indispensable to me and my business.

Awful, horrible and never again! I was in a bad accident in 2018, the insurance company wanted releases signed within 13 hours. I knew something was right so I contacted Bernard Law Group. I should have done better research and more calling around. 2 years of treatment came to a referral for a procedure my insurance doesn't cover, doesn't even consider it it's just flat excluded from the policy. 2 years of what I am now realizing was just lies and passing blame to the other side. 2 months later and I am still waiting and being fed more lies. Viivi Vanderslice is incompeten, doesn't listen to you and just does whatever she feels is best for you without discussing or considering your wants or needs. If I could get the fee they collected for themselves I would, they don't deserve even half of what they got.

What a Personal Injury Lawyer Can Do for You

A personal injury lawyer specializes in helping individuals who have been physically or emotionally injured due to the negligence or wrongful actions of another party. Whether you've been hurt in a car accident, suffered a slip and fall, or experienced medical malpractice, a personal injury attorney works to ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries. They can help you recover damages for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related expenses.

Personal injury lawyers act as your advocate, navigating the legal system on your behalf and dealing with insurance companies to ensure you get the compensation you deserve. They understand how to handle complex legal matters and help you avoid common pitfalls.

When Should I Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer?

Hiring a personal injury lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where you've been harmed due to another's negligence. Some key scenarios include:

  • Severe injuries: If you've suffered significant or permanent injuries that result in substantial medical bills, a lawyer can help ensure you are fairly compensated.
  • Long-term or permanent disability: Injuries that affect your ability to work or require ongoing medical treatment are complex, and a lawyer can help estimate long-term damages.
  • Disputed liability: If the responsible party or their insurance company denies liability for your injury, a lawyer can gather evidence and advocate on your behalf.
  • Insurance company lowball offers: Insurers often try to settle personal injury claims for as little as possible. A lawyer can negotiate to get you a fair settlement.
  • Medical malpractice claims: Injuries caused by a doctor, nurse, or healthcare provider due to negligence require a personal injury lawyer experienced in medical malpractice law.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances: If you've been injured due to exposure to toxins, chemicals, or dangerous substances, a lawyer can help pursue legal action.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process is crucial, especially if you're unsure of the full extent of your injuries or damages.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

A personal injury lawyer provides a wide range of services to guide you through the legal process and maximize your compensation. They can:

  • Evaluate your case: A lawyer will assess the strength of your claim and determine whether you have a viable case.
  • Investigate the incident: Gathering evidence such as police reports, witness statements, medical records, and expert opinions is key to building a strong case.
  • Negotiate with insurance companies: Lawyers handle communications with insurance companies to ensure you receive a fair settlement and aren't taken advantage of.
  • File a lawsuit if necessary: If a fair settlement can't be reached, the lawyer can file a personal injury lawsuit on your behalf and represent you in court.
  • Help calculate damages: This includes medical expenses, lost wages, future medical needs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.
  • Prepare and file legal documents: Lawyers handle all the paperwork and deadlines associated with your case, including filing motions and discovery requests.
  • Represent you at trial: If your case goes to trial, the lawyer will argue your case before a judge and jury to obtain the compensation you deserve.

How Are Personal Injury Lawyers Paid?

Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis. This means they only get paid if they win your case, either through settlement or a court judgment. Here’s how it works:

  • Contingency fee percentage: The lawyer will take a percentage of the settlement or award, typically between 25% and 40%, depending on the complexity of the case and the stage at which it's resolved.
  • Costs and expenses: In addition to the contingency fee, the lawyer may deduct other costs associated with the case, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, and court costs. These expenses are often advanced by the lawyer and repaid out of the settlement.
  • No upfront payment: Since the lawyer’s fee is contingent on winning, you usually don’t pay anything upfront.

Always discuss the lawyer’s fee structure during your consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a personal injury lawyer depends on the specifics of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure. However, since most personal injury lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, the amount you pay will depend on the outcome of your case. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Contingency fees: Typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or award. The percentage may increase if the case goes to trial or requires an appeal.
  • Other costs: In addition to the lawyer's fee, you may be responsible for case-related expenses such as expert witness fees, medical record retrieval fees, and court costs. These are often deducted from your settlement, so you won't have to pay out of pocket.

While the cost may seem high, hiring an experienced lawyer can significantly increase the amount you recover, making it a worthwhile investment.

Top Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Before hiring a personal injury lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure you’re choosing the right representation. Here are some important questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with personal injury cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has handled cases involving similar injuries or accidents.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee and what percentage they will take from any settlement or award.
  3. How long will my case take?
While it's hard to predict, a lawyer can give you an estimate based on similar cases they’ve handled.
  4. How often do you take cases to trial?
Some lawyers prefer to settle quickly, while others are more comfortable going to court if necessary.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior lawyers or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it's important to know who will be managing your claim.
  6. Do you have references from past clients?
Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into the lawyer’s effectiveness and professionalism.

How to Check the Credibility of a Personal Injury Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible personal injury lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any history of disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google reviews can provide insight into the lawyer's reputation and client satisfaction.
  • Look at their track record: Review their experience with personal injury cases, particularly how many cases they’ve successfully resolved or taken to trial.
  • Ask for references: Credible lawyers should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their work.
  • Check professional memberships: Lawyers who are members of respected organizations, like the American Association for Justice (AAJ), often have a solid reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a personal injury lawyer, prepare the following:

  • Detailed account of the accident: Write down everything you remember about the incident, including dates, times, and locations. Include any witnesses or police reports if available.
  • Medical records and bills: Bring any documentation of your injuries, treatments, and associated medical costs.
  • Insurance information: Provide your insurance details and any communication you’ve had with the other party’s insurance company.
  • Employment and income records: If your injury has impacted your ability to work, bring proof of lost wages or reduced earning capacity.
  • Photos or videos: If you have photos of the accident scene, your injuries, or property damage, bring them to your consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare a list of questions to ask, including how the lawyer will handle your case and what you can expect in terms of timeline and outcome.

By preparing thoroughly for your first consultation, you’ll help the lawyer understand your case more quickly and get a better sense of your legal options.
