My Deceased husband has been a client for 15+ years at Kelley Ferraro. Over the years I have dealt with many professional employees from attorneys to secretaries to probate, etc. I have two employees that have stood out over the years one being Bidea Kelly. I met Bidea through a business that I had had and she had turned me on to Kelley Ferraro. At that time she worked in probate and always was very personal. Bidea would give you as much information as she could or turn you on to another employee that would be able to answer your questions. The other employee is Valerie, the settlement coordinator. sometimes in a large law firm It's almost the luck of the draw what employee you get to speak to and for the last eight months I have been blessed to get Valerie. When speaking with her whether it's a question or she calls to give me information it's almost like she takes it personal as if she understands what I'm going through. I have gotten more information from Valerie in eight months then I have in the 15 years that I've been dealing With this law firm. There is much protocol / paperwork dealing with a lawsuit, as well as different departments. I always felt in the last 14 years that my case had been Unintentionally lost in the shuffle. NOT with Valerie, she knows exactly what chain the protocol has to take before a settlement and never hesitates to explain why a settlement would take as long as it does! Valerie has worked very hard on my case and I'm sure she does this for other clients as well. Of all the employees I have come in contact with I feel confident in saying Valerie enjoys her job and takes pride in being the best she can be for Kelley Ferraro !! She's a keeper!!! Thank you , Linda Messina

The attorney that handled my wife mesothelioma case didn't want to do anything. I had to do all of the research. She stated that she didn't know where to get the legal records from. I gave her phone numbers fir witnesses and she never wrote the correct numbers down and nor did she contact anyone. They only want easy money, they don't care about thier clients. They only want an easy payday.

Jaw droppingly unethical. Lou Bertrand is the Mayor of Hiram Village which is experiencing financial and other crises. Recently, and on public record, Mayor Bertrand (when confronted with a no confidence vote in his leadership abilities brought by myself at a Village Council meeting) attempted to humiliate and intimidate me by playing blackball desperate politics by revealing information he had dug up about me to distract from his leadership issues. Lou Bertrand is a private attorney/public official who is willing to smear constituents to avoid accountability. That should give anyone considering retaining his counsel great pause.

GET THERE BEFORE 3:45pm OR GET A DOOR SLAMMED IN YOUR FACE. I just had a terrible interaction with one of the clerks that works there that shut the door in my face, literally, I could have stuck my hand out to stop it, but I didn’t. So I knocked. I was informed they close at 3:45. “I don’t get paid after 4” is what she told me. Their website says nothing about closing at 3:45pm. The person I talked to on the phone this morning said they’re open 8am - 4pm. This has been a negative experience made especially awful thanks to an incredibly rude worker. I hope you can find better staff in the future.

Mr. Ernst and his staff are welcoming, God fearing people. A peace exudes over one as they step off of the elevator. This "Peace" I felt led me to an amazing outfit. Since hiring Dave, he has been very FOCUSED on the results of my matters. I have no qualms or complaints. He doesn't belittle you, he empowers you. Just the other day, I witnessed his paralegal share love in the form of a hug for a client they had helped successfully and it touched my heart. Again, I dont know who the lady was, but the love and caring shared by the members in this office is what I believe helps Dave to focus on the pertinent and important issues. I titled this focused representation because I always see the Staff there focused on making a positive difference in peoples lives. Not once have I heard negativity or an attitude. They don't treat you like a number here but like a human should be treated. This place is highly recommended.

Hired him to represent me in a frivolous business lawsuit case. He demonstrated poor communication (approx. 30 non-responses for follow up). He also did not demonstrate any urgency with the court regarding my case. Filed a motion without my knowledge. I also had to look up status updates online to see where the case was in the legal system since he was unresponsive. He was very responsive after I replaced him with another lawyer. He also provided poor legal advice early in my case according to new legal representation. It appears he simply did not want to go to court based on the e-mails. My new lawyer is working to redo motions he has filed since they are incomplete (did not site any case law for our legal position). There was also no bond set in the event the plaintiff was incorrect in this matter. I highly recommend not using this lawyer for any business litigation. The cost to my business has been high.

Monty has been our family’s attorney for over 25 years and has always been available when there were questions about estate planning. His office staff was very professional and dedicated as we never felt rushed when needing to speak to him or his office staff. I have found Monty to be very knowledgeable and straightforward through the years in his approach working with us. He always took the time to make us feel like family and was very patient in really listening to my 90-year-old dad every time he had questions especially concerning my mom or when my dad did not understand something. Monty was there each time supporting us in making difficult decisions. My dad enjoyed telling Monty about the family and sometimes about some personal issues he wanted advise on concerning his banking or how he paid the wrong bill. Monty would listen and sometimes shared some of his own firsthand experiences while advising my dad in an easy and understanding manner. During the last 5 years when my mom became ill and had to be placed into a nursing home, Monty and his staff were very patient and took the time to explain to me and my dad what needed to be done especially when it came time to apply for Medicaid. My dad was very confused on what to do but Monty worked with me explaining each required document. I can honestly say I have learned a lot about estate planning by having to step in for my dad from the time my mom went into a nursing home to the time when my dad was diagnosed with end stage dementia. I cannot thank them enough knowing that both my parents received the best nursing home care which they deserved during their final years. Upon my parents passing, I feel that I could not have successfully fulfilled my parents’ wishes without Monty and his staff’s professional help. It was very smooth as everything was preplanned and placed into a Trust. I have highly recommended Monty to my friends and relatives who have voiced concerns about their aging parents telling them he goes above and beyond and is very skilled in all phases of estate planning and elder law. I promised them that they would not be disappointed as Monty and his staff are very compassionate and experienced people.

He’s too much of in a hurry to really read the question. His response was too brief and I base my review on his inability to spend a couple minutes reading my question. My question had a detailed backstory and an email sent by him stated he wanted me to give more information when I had already done so. I know jurisprudence and what empathy is. It is my fervent opinion that this Esq. just wants publicity. Well, you got it!

One star only because Google review makes you choose at least one, if I could give minus stars I would, we met with this attorney at her office, she agreed to take the case but wanted some money up front to hold the case as new clients, we didn't sign a contract with her yet, big mistake on our part but we trusted her, she took $250.00 from us and we were going to meet with her again soon to sign a contract to begin working with her as our Attorney, we tried getting back in touch with her numerous times even went to her office, no one was there, she never called us back and kept the money for doing absolutely nothing for us, we felt totally scammed, we called the Portage county bar and they called her and spoke to her, she promised them she would give us our money back, she never did, amazed that she would just keep the money, buyer beware with this attorney.

I would not recommend. During my consult I was given incorrect information about home buying/trusts. My lender and their attorney sent me an email with the correct information. I called and asked if I could email this to the office so it could be written up. Secretary said he needed to talk to me (which I already did at the consult), so I asked if I could give her my lender's number because he will have better insight on what is needed. She said he could but he still would have to talk to me since I'm his client (already spoke about my issues and concerns at consult). At this point my confidence for services here are gone since he already provided wrong information, so I told her I would just try to get this done elsewhere. Secretary was pleasant and professional- she is the only reason it's not a one star.

I have been a nasty custody battle and ensuing divorce and Lanene has truly been the one and only attorney that I have spoke to or worked with that genuinely cares about me and my children. She worked hard and swift to put together a case, gather evidence, file motions, and deliver subpoena for an emergency custody case in 10 days and pulled it off without a hitch. She is very smart, driven, hard-working, and caring. I will never use another lawyer for any legal matter! She is truly a blessing.

DO NOT HIRE THIS GUY!!! If you just need an attorney to show up to court this your guy! Don’t expect any actual effort to be put forward. This clown will not go to bat for you. He charged me to have 5 witnesses subpoenaed for court yet not a single one was subpoenaed. The morning of our most recent court appearance he made me scramble to contact the previously stated witnesses to ask them if they would be able to join via telephone for the hearing (this was at 5:00 A.M.) I was able to contact two of them at that time and both were extremely confused as they hadn’t heard from him and weren’t in a position to give their testimony. In a year and a half he never appeared as if he was actually prepared. when push comes to shove he would blame me for changes in circumstances. Silas and his office staff are extremely unorganized. I had to repeatedly send him the same information and documents. I finally had enough and fired this lazy piece of crap yesterday. Please don’t make the same mistake that I made. Silas has been instrumental in successfully guiding me through the probate system on two occasions. I was executor on my father & his wife's estate, and Silas was great throughout the whole, painful, bureaucratic, legal nightmare of probate. As others have said his response time is excellent. I was NEVER left hanging and every E-mail was responded to quickly, sometimes way after normal hours. I would send a message late, assuming he would respond in the A.M., but often got a response instantly. Silas also prepared Wills for many family members, Powers of attorneys, et cetera, His treatment of my very elderly and not-very-trusting-of-lawyers Mother and her husband during the estate planning process, was very professional and personable at the same time. He won them over in a single meeting!

STAY AWAY FROM THOMAS KANDO and SARAH. They will rob you out of your hard earned money and very unprofessional!! I had an extremely disappointing experience with this law firm, particularly with Thomas Kando. My family engaged their services in November 2023, seeking assistance with a property damage case. During our initial meeting, Mr. Kando assured us that the case was strong and encouraged us to proceed, which we did, trusting his professional judgment. However, after receiving a $1,000 payment, communication from both Mr. Kando and his assistant Sarah ceased. Despite repeated attempts to contact them via phone and email, we received no responses. On multiple occasions, we visited the office in person, only to be told that we would receive a call back, which never happened. Out of approximately 15 visits, we encountered Sarah twice, and she provided vague, yet falsely reassuring updates about the case’s progress. It became apparent that they may not have taken any real action on our behalf. We were told that Mr. Kando had allegedly attempted to negotiate with the construction company, but no documentation or evidence of these communications was ever presented to us. By August 2024, nearly nine months later, we confronted Mr. Kando in person after he had avoided us for so long. During this meeting, he informed us that the case was not successful, contradicting his initial optimism and showing little concern for the outcome or for the fact that we had trusted him with our money and our case. Overall, our experience with this law firm was highly unprofessional, and we felt misled and ignored after they were paid. I would strongly advise caution when considering their services.

This woman told two bold-faced lies in court this morning: that I had a criminal conviction for stalking that I do not have, and that I drop the children off every day after school at my ex-husband's at completely random times. They ***take the bus*** like every other kid in America. I can't figure out if she has her clients mixed up, likes to make problems that require oodles of time and legal fees to defend against, is going senile, or just believes every dumb thing her client tells her. I had a consultation with her for something to do with my business, and she turned around and represented my ex-husband in our divorce where both our business profits and income were issues, not sure how that was ethical based on her prior knowledge of me. If you want to identify the most important problems, devise a strategy to actually get on with your life and be satisfied with 80% of what you wanted because life's too short instead of being locked in years of conflict she adds to your situation, go with someone else. If you're looking to have a full trial on every issue, real and manufactured, and don't mind stressing out your children with a two-year divorce, or pouring money that could best go to your children's needs because you won't compromise on anything, ever, until they turn 18, she's your best choice.

I had a really bad experience working with Ellen. She gave me a horrible legal advice, and put me in a dire legal position. Not only she failed to even give me any legal advice, it literally felt like she’s working for my adversary and opposing counsel. She is very incompetent when it comes to technical aspects, like if you send her digital evidence via email, she asks you over and over again to print it, and send it to her. She also has issues with interpersonal communications, she comes off as rude (there is a difference between being professional and to the point and being rude, she crosses that line to the rude side of behavior). The judge kept threatening me illegally and call my constitutional right of due service as “gamesmanship”. When i wanted to hire a civil rights attorney, she literally threatened to terminate her representation of me at a very critical time of the case being handled. All in all, after working with her, she demonstrated rudeness, incompetence, and failure to provide legal advice as she should have.

Mr. Jones was not a typical attorney. He is very straight-forward and gets directly to the point he does not candy coat. He does not feed me with crap that was useless to my case or looked to further any agenda to obtain more money. He told me up front what the cost would be for a type of case and that was also the same as other attorneys I have consulted with. I have hired Mr. Jones in the past years for related cases and will continue to do so. Found Jones through the state for custody battle and shared parenting. He was very judgmental twords my financial situation as if everyone is supposed to have thousands of dollars laying around in their bank accounts. He was very uncaring, cold, disconnected and only cared about money. He stopped returning my phone calls and insisted he didn't get paid when he took all of the money directly out of my account that I had owed him. He charged me up front for a big case that ended up being very small, then I'm assuming didn't want to pay me back for all the hours he didn't use on my case so started not returning my phone calls.

This guy is awesome. I had been going back and forth with a probate issue for years. Consulted multiple lawyers. This guy got involved, took control and resolved it quickly and quietly. He knows what he is doing, communicated with me every time I needed him and smoked the other side. Impressed from start to finish.

Hired to settle estate of family member. A year and a half, not settled. Failure to perform executor duties and total failure to communicate.

Totally unprofessional. This man belittled me on the phone, and didn’t even give me a chance to fully explain myself without getting an attitude and making me feel like I was stupid.

If she is appointed to your case as a Guardian Ad Litem, I’d recommend your attorney request another one. She was nearly impossible to get in contact with (emails nor phone calls), and she literally waited until the night before her report was due to write it. She saw me interact with my child that I had not seen for a year for only a short period of time (not enough for a decision of this magnitude), and left out or didn’t go into depth about important factors of the case in her report, such as evidence I had shown her. When I met her, she spoke of her job as a realtor and how she was dealing with a client rather than discussing my case. If you research her you’ll see that she has other interests and it is my opinion that she uses this as quick side money. She gets paid $2,000 upfront and does a few hours of work at most while just quoting whatever you say to her in her reports to fill the pages to make it look like she did her job.

If I could give less than one star, I would. As an "impartial" guardian ad litem, she outright LIED in her report to the court. Lied. I'll stand by that. She is not impartial, and I find it no coincidence that she tends to favor fathers as does the magistrate who appointed her. Be wary around her.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
