I called him for consultation, and he just acted like my issue was a bother & he didn't want to deal with it. He said legally there was nothing I could do, which I understand, but my issue with him is that he was very callous and dismissive. His attitude was basically like I can't help you, go away.

Sean, is a rockstar. I went into court expecting the usual pro functionary representation you get from a court appointed lawyer. I was so wrong and majorly impressed with the outstanding job Sean, did for me and my family. Even though the odds were stacked heavily against me Sean, stayed positive and focused. He totally exceeded my expectations, going as far as to represent my mom and cousin, at no charge, filing motions on their behalf to strengthen my case. I really appreciated his honesty, warrior attitude, and spirit. Whenever I have a question he always takes the time to make sure I understand what's going on and never rushes me off the phone. If I could I would have Sean on retainer to handle any legal problem I might have, he's that good!!! I recommend him to anyone in need of a great attorney. Thank you again for everything. You are definitely a ROCKSTAR

Patrice Denman handled my complicated divorce and child support case. A contested divorce can be very complicated and confusing when both sides disagree on multiple levels and children are involved. Patrice Denman wisely guided me through the legal divorce process step by step and provided a well-executed plan with clarity and direction. Throughout the case and afterwards, she kept me abreast of case activities and status. Her legal, communication and problem solving skills gave me confidence that I was well represented and she was the right attorney for my case. In court, Patrice Denman’s sharp, strong legal arguments were backed with well supported facts. Her passion to pursue a just and equitable resolution laid the foundation for well-defined objectives that were reasonable and unwavering. She productively used information and time to manage volumes of legal and case related documents. She accurately calculated and clearly explained the child support. The separation agreement Patrice Denman wrote for me clearly defined many details regarding children’s activities and visitation that will transcend time. Her compassion and attentiveness to details, my children and my needs was encouraging and supportive and more than I expected. She understands family life and exercised flexibility in scheduling to accommodate my work and children’s schedules. I saw that Patrice Denman is well respected in the Lake County court system and amongst her legal peers. Based on my recommendation, my friends have engaged her for legal services and were extremely pleased her with legal services. Patrice Denman is a smart, supportive and fully-engaged attorney that uses time, information and money wisely. She will continue to be my attorney. If you need a family law attorney, call Patrice Denman and ask for a free consultation.

At this time I would not recommended Attorney Tomas Piggott. Tomas will work hard for you and he will show confidence. I believe he is genuinely sincere in the actions he takes. Unfortunate when it became difficult he did abandon his responsibilities. Thomas is over loaded and today is a one man show; he needs improvement in case management today. He has the potential to change this and resume his success. Unfortunately in the past four years he has overloaded himself resulting in fetal endings for the cases he has committed to us. I can only speak on our experiences, and regretfully do not recommend Tomas Piggott till he improves his work habits. He was once an excellent Attorney, I know this because he had represented us for exactly ten years.

I hired Jerry for a child support matter which he could seem to get past the requirements of Juvenile Court to even have a hearing. Jerry’s secretary should be the Attorney she does all the work, answers all the questions and runs the office as well. All Jerry does is appear in court and from what I heard is clueless in the courtroom. A do not hire!

Gerald Bohan handled my divorce. If that is what you would call it. Seems like despite his years of experience he was ill prepared to handle my case. I felt he was very misleading in what he said we could acomplish. He said a lot things in our "free consultation" (which I was partially billed for) I feel to get me on the hook and said that there were certain things that were going to be fought for and accomplished and then during the divorce process, trial and court dates he said no that's not how or what were going to do. I felt completely abandoned and helpless during his "representation" of me. I felt totally failed by him. I would not recommend him. He seemed out of date. I suggest getting a younger and more hungry attorney. I felt he couldn't have cared less about what happened or the outcome of our case nor did he have my best interest at heart. It was horrible. If I could give 0 stars I would.

David Barth is a very loud and boisterous man but I do not feel he uses it to his advantage in the courtroom. I did hire him for a family law case and what happened was exactly what he said he expected but did not seem to try and turn it another direction. He is very willing to give you information and educate you as much as he can on whats happening and why. He is quite a character but just falls short on the courtroom followthrough. If you need a hard fighter for you on a big case, don't hire him but if you want knowledge and a lawyer with you on a fairly average simple and easy case then by all means, hire him!! His retainer is reasonable and so is his hourly rate.

Was not able to get answers to simple questions about my case because it was impossible to get in touch with Mr. Jennings. Had to beg repeatedly for a response to emails, or phone messages, then was billed for the unanswered attempts to get in contact with the lawyer who was supposed to be representing me. I had 2 court appearances for my case in which Mr. Jennings failed to appear and was a no show. One without any notice, and one I was informed the morning of after several attempts in the days prior to get in touch with him. Was over an hour late to a scheduled appointment set up well in advance. Overall made a stressful situation worse by not being available to answer questions, or be available. Left feeling I was on my own other than paperwork that I needed filed. Not very client oriented, compassionate or understanding. Very unprofessional and very bad in responsiveness and communication.

Ruggles Law Office did an outstanding job providing counsel and managing the details of my father's estate. The law firm created the legal documents needed to simplify matters prior to my father's passing, then provided outstanding service managing though the process after his passing. The law firm provided sound guidance and counsel, kept the lines of communication open and me informed, and managed well the real-estate matters and a few items that needed Probate Court approval and orders. I called to ask a simple question he was the one doing all the questioning was very rude to me said my problem is I don’t think I should have to pay for anything even though I don’t feel I should have to pay for a question. I asked for his name and he hung up on me. It is no wonder they have such little stars for the reviews. If I am going to pay for an attorney again you best believe that they are going to be the ones who deserve the money. Update: To the responder The conversation was completely different then described. I did not say others refused to answer my question. I said that they told me i had to contact an attorney in the area that my divorce took place. No i do not feel it is right to make someone pay to get a simple question answered after already paying thousands of dollars for a divorce. I was only told that you did not have time to continue the conversation AFTER i made the comment that all the questions you had been asking was taking longer then me getting the answer to mine. so time was clearly not the issue. I do not write reviews to get back at someone. I write reviews when i feel the unprofessional or professional behavior deserves recognition and in this case your unprofessionalism deserves just that. Tone is about 90% of a conversation. I will not say mine was perfect but as you are the business and i am not you should have been less rude and if not willing to help apologizing for an inconvenience and maybe recommending me to someone or at least telling me details of what it would take to have this question answered through your company.

Because of this we also had to retake (and pay!!!) To take the test again.was told because so many people are filling for bankruptcy.and that's my fault how??? We also had to pay another $300 on top of the first $1200 we paid because of another screw up the did.i could go on and on but I have wasted enough of my life on this horrible horrible experience!!! Contacted and hired this Lawyer. He gave very careful instruction to us and in return we lost everything following his advice. We were advised by the company that we were dealing with that all that we needed was a payment arrangement and that we were not in a place where bankruptcy was needed. This Lawyer told us to ignore even letters for us to appear in court because he had the case under control. In which we did not appear in court following his advice. And we had to seek counsel from other Lawyers (while he was still working for us) to find out that we should have gone to our court cases. Too much time passed waiting to hear back from our hired attorney, as he became silent. So many questions were left unanswered. And we were clueless as what we were to do. Needless to say that we literally had to hire another attorney, just to find out what kind of rights we had and to try and help turn the situation around. We were actually just financially fine without a Lawyer. And dealing with this one gave us problems that we have never had. Would not recommend him to anyone.

Mr. LaRue's strategy for resolution with any estate situations is to delay, distract, disregard and damage relationships amongst heirs and their families. As a beneficiary of my parents' trust, I hired Reminger Attorney Adriann Mcgee to represent me. I needed someone to look out for my best interests; someone to protect me against the heinous actions of my brother (the successor trustee), who is unjustly administering the trust after the deaths of our parents; someone to help me navigate through the provisions of the trust document; etc..... What I got in Reminger Attorney Adriann Mcgee was someone who was incompetent throughout her representation of me, and someone who has left me in a worse position than I was in before I hired her. Soon after she was hired, Adriann Mcgee said defamatory / derogatory statements about me to the opposing party, statements that no attorney should express about a client to anyone, ever. I did not find out what Ms. Mcgee had said about me until several months later when I read her defamatory / derogatory statements in a motion that the opposing party had filed with the court during the course of my lawsuit. After that, the opposing party continued to use those defamatory / derogatory statements said by Ms. Mcgee against me over, and over, and over, in subsequent motions that he filed with the court, and also, at the court hearings. During her representation of me, Adriann Mcgee did not give me proper legal advice, and failed to present me with all of my options pertaining to a provision in my parents' trust regarding the cancellation of a mortgage that is held by my deceased parents on my property. After she no longer represented me, I was told that as a "courtesy", I would receive a satisfaction of mortgage document drawn up by Ms. Mcgee. The satisfaction of mortgage document that I received contained numerous mistakes, and I had to edit the document in order to correct Ms. Mcgee's errors. Even after I corrected Ms. Mcgee's numerous mistakes, the document itself was useless under my circumstances. Deceased people cannot sign documents, so, it was an absolutely inappropriate document that I could not use, something that a competent attorney would have known. I have done my own research, and according to The Ohio Revised Codes Statute 5301.30, mortgages expire after a certain amount of time. I can just wait for my mortgage to expire, so, it is not necessary to have an attorney draw up legal documents to cancel it, a fact that Ms. Mcgee failed to mention. A competent attorney would have been familiar with The Ohio Revised Codes Statutes regarding mortgages in order to provide a client with all of the available options, and not just mention the options that an attorney can profit from. Adriann Mcgee failed to file an action in court for The Ohio Revised Codes Statute 2108.81, as she should have done. This is a significant blunder that a competent attorney would not have made. Ms. Mcgee's failure to file an action in court for The Ohio Revised Codes Statute 2108.81 has left my deceased parents, and me, with devastating consequences. Her incompetence has allowed my brother to inter our parents' ashes in a place that they never would have chosen, that they never would have agreed to, and a place that I would have objected to had I been consulted, as I should have been according to The Ohio Revised Codes Statute 2108.81. Adriann Mcgee made arrangements for something that I specifically told her not to make. By doing what I specifically told her not to do, Ms. Mcgee set off a chain of events that ended very badly. In order to deceive a colleague, Adriann Mcgee altered an email regarding my case. This has made me wonder if Ms. Mcgee has falsified any other documents. These are just a handful of the numerous issues that I have had with Reminger Attorney Adriann Mcgee. If you ever need an attorney, do yourself a favor, and hire someone else.

I am involved in a very messy trust situation, so, I contacted Nicholas Laudato to see if he could help me with that. We had an in - person consultation at his office, we discussed my case, and we discussed what I wanted him to do. Before I left his office, Nicholas Laudato told me that I would have to pay him hundreds of dollars in advance just to look through my documents in order for him to decide if he would take my case. Later that day, I emailed Nicholas Laudato some of my documents, and he promptly increased the amount of money that he insisted that I pay him in advance just to look through those documents. He also made sure to remind me that this required payment in advance of hundreds of dollars was only for him to look through my documents in order for him to decide whether he would take my case, and it covered nothing else. I have communicated with many attorneys in my quest to find the right attorney to help me with my legal issues. Some of those attorneys have been rejected by me, some of those attorneys have told me that they will not take my case without even looking at my documentation, and some of those attorneys have told me that they will not take my case after they have looked at my documentation. Nicholas Laudato, however, is the only attorney who has ever insisted that I pay him hundreds of dollars in advance just to make a decision if he will, or, if he will not, take my case. What a rip - off!. That is how Nicholas Laudato does business, so, you would be wise to avoid him, and The Probate Pro.

Siferd broke his financial contract with me by dropping me right in the middle of my case. There was no reason given for his actions. I was totally left in lurch. He put a lien on my settlement so no other lawyer would help me because there was not enough money in it due to the lien Siferd put on my settlement. He took over $20,000 from me yet I have not received a penny from my settlement. Siferd has caused me so much stress, pain and suffering I had a stroke. He does not deserve any stars at all!

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
