I had a Workman's comp case with Kelly Matthews. We won our hearing after my claim was denied by Zurich Ins. However, I have a contested case hearing in one week. I have left numerous messages for Kelly Matthews for 3 weeks she has not returned my calls. My Doctors office has been emailing regarding what information to send to Kelly Matthews to assist in the upcoming hearing and AGAIN she has failed to reply. I made my last phone call and advised her paralegal how dissatisfied I am with no communication and a huge upcoming hearing. Kelly Matthews send me a withdraw letter stating I have degraded her and her staff. So now I have no representation for my upcoming hearing in one week and she is still going to receive payments out of my workman's compensation!!! Beware of this attorney who will drop you but not your money when you need her the most!

We hired Kelly Matthews to work on behalf of our granddaughter. An appointment was made promptly and we were introduced to Kristen Hunter who became my granddaughter's attorney of record for what has turned out to be a very difficult Worker's Compensation case. Ms. Hunter has worked tirelessly and won a very difficult hearing in favor of our granddaughter. The situation is still fluid and this firm has met our legal needs and continues to do so.

I tried for over a year to handle my own claim. It was extremely trying and time consuming. Once I realized that surgery was my only option, I decided to reach out to an attorney to help me through the process. I am so very glad that Ms. Matthews was recommended to me. I traveled over an hour to her office and it was very worth my time. Ms. Matthews was always very attentive, professional and responsive. I am pleased to say that she just helped me finalize my case which ended on a positive note. I would highly recommend her to anyone in need of legal assistance.

The receptionist on the phone is extremely rude and she told me that the lawyer is no longer interested in Social Security Matters. This is how it went. I called, a lady picked up and asked me in a rude manner "what do you want?". I politely informed her that I was referred to David Dopkin and that is he the best in what I am looking to do. She asked "what do you want to do??" I said "I am looking for Social Security..." before I could finish she said "He is not interested" *Hung Up*. The worst experience I have had with any lawyer. No need to call this person, he needs to train his staff first. Then he needs to figure out what his law office actually does.

If you're considering hiring Sheila as your lawyer, I implore you to reconsider. My experience with her was a clear indication that she prioritizes her own opinions over her clients' well-being. Don't make the same mistake I did. Seek representation elsewhere, where your case will be handled with the care and attention it deserves. In conclusion, Sheila's incompetence and lack of regard for her clients' interests have had a profound and devastating impact on my life. Steer clear of her at all costs.

Rebecca Henderson is an awesome attorney. She was very thorough and explained the process completely. I have read some of the negative reviews and I don’t think they gave her a fair review. I went into the situation with patients knowing that the Government process works very slow and attorneys don’t have control of timelines. Rebecca Henderson is an attorney who stands behind her clients. She doesn’t fill you with fake promises and tells you like it is.

I am trying to contact Rebecca R Henderson for( an appointment ) in the nearest future . I have an appointment with the psychologist October 5 2022, about an disability case 1999+ 2022. I believe I am being miss represented with my son Michael as my payee it should be my son Marcus hill . I am 10% disable with the fact I had brain surgery 2004 . Yes it was a success I am no longer having headaches. With that fact I believe I should always have income of 700$ . I was discontinue this year but I am appealing on the fact I can work for at least 4 hours per day with the right lawyer and doctor. Do you have time for this important matter to me my family is struggling with income and I would like to solve this matter as soon as possible. I would recommend this lawyer to people who do not choose to have the accurate solution to solve the reason why they are having problems and choose to stay on Disabilities without working or changes to the case file.

He explained everything that had to do with my social security case. His office staff is exceptional. They always returned my calls and answered my emails. Before the hearing he took the time to call me to explain the details about my hearing. The day of my hearing he called me and gave me support. TODA RABA!

Mr. Honig was my attorney and I was approved on my first hearing. However, he had a few issues. He didn't seem very aware of my case and I had to give him a crash course in my situation minutes before the trial. I think I was approved mostly upon my own testimony and my wife's, we're both "talkers", and because my condition is one of the automatics (Parkinson's) when it get's bad enough. He really seems to be playing the numbers game of get as many clients as possible, even if it's more than you can keep up with, and then take the money from whatever percentage wins.

Shandon Tonry is a sleazy, dishonest lawyer, and usually, that is what is called for in a defense attorney, but her incompetence lost my case. Turns out she was too busy pimping out her 12-year-old daughter to some 15 or 16-year-old British kid. The things that'll keep your mind busy these days, amiright? She claims to come from a background of sexual abuse, but I think she's a liar, like all the best attorneys are... except her, of course.

Joan is very professional, caring, detail oriented, and has no problem explaining exactly what you can expect as things progress. In my particular case, Joan has helped me with workers' compensation, guardianship, estate, financial, medical, tax, social security, and family issues. Joan is committed to making sure everything is handled to your satisfaction, so you can lessen your stress. She answers all questions, or will help guide you to find out what you need to know. In my case, Joan has accompanied me to family conference updates on medical progress of a brain injured family member for whom I am now guardian, and he is well cared for in a proper facility. Joan continues to stay in touch throughout the year and checks on how I am and how my ward is progressing. If I had had to accomplish on my own all that Joan has assisted me with, I would be lost and buried in red tape. Joan answers questions promptly, and when she is tied up, will let you know when to expect her attention. She asks specific questions and has been immeasurably helpful in a complicated situation. I highly recommend Joan Durkin.

Greetings to all 💝 I would like to share my experience with Attorney Brian Bernard. I had Mr. Bernard saved in my contacts from a relative in jail that asked me to reach out to him (Brian) in June 2024. About 1 month later my son went to jail and the attorney that I initially reached out to wanted to help for the "low-low" price of $7,500 for a Class "A" misdemeanor with an initial payment of $2,500😂. I sent Brian a text message wanting to know how much should a misdemeanor charge of that nature cost. I was bracing myself for impact of his response (because I am extra broke😂) but his response pleased me. The conversation of the photo is attached💝 Brian had my son out within hours. I was relieved because as parents we want our children to do the right thing and be ok. The day was nearing for me to fly out of town for work, so I was pleased and burden lifted. Moving forward to August 2024, my Aunt called me upset and stated her son went to jail and it would cost a lot of money for the bail bonds to get him released. I instantly said "Aunty call Brian, I am sure he can help and have him released the same day for a fair price💕 " She said text me his info and I will call him (In her still hurt tone). After my aunty called Brian, she called back telling me how excited she was and I could hear it in her soul💕 Then she told me some fun facts about Brian's career from their in person meet (I paid through CashApp😊 so we did not meet in person). My aunty kept thanking me. I said Aunty we Thank God for Mr. Brian Bernard. Names to me are very important because what we are called is what we are as well as what we respond to. For example My name is Jacqueline which means "May God Protect Her" and He definitely has throughout my whole entire life💝 Brian means: High, Noble, Honor and dignity Bernard means: Brave, Hardy and strong Now look at this fair man walk in his purpose according to who and what he is called.💗💖💝💓

I hired Elizabeth Rivera as my attorney for a complicated lawsuit, involving more than one party and including a corporation. As most people realize, the wheels of justice run slow. Covid interrupted my cases. However, even after all that, Elizabeth amazed me on many occasions. It was as if she had perfect recall of the details of all aspects of the case and quickly zoomed in on discrepancies by various parties. In court, she was professional, skilled and very prepared. I am happy with the results. In every aspect of the case I could win, I did. In the one aspect of the case that through no fault of Elzabeth I lost, Elizabeth's amazing court skills, used to argue against the outlandish attorney fees that the other side tried to make me pay, won me a favorable ruling. Do I recommend Elizabeth Rivera to others? Absolutely! Will I use her again, if needed? Absolutely! Do I have anything negative to say about her or any of her staff? NO!

LITERALLY charged 3 times what other attorneys cost and when you need to speak to him, you might receive a call days later from an assistant who doesn't know anything either. Will offer suggestions that aren't applicable. The absolute worst experience I've ever encountered with a lawyer. Nightmare. Just received denial letter from SSA for disability. Firm had an agent call me with a questionnaire and determined, without seeing the contents of the letter, that I had a "technical" denial, and stated I could not be helped. Called the firm and possibly talked to a paralegal. Again refused to listen to the circumstances stated on the letter, which contained numerous inaccuracies. Also refused to consider I'm a 100% disabled veteran, concurrently rated "individually unemployable." Ultimately was told I should read the requirements on the SSA website. Well, I did. This law firm is only looking for the easy clients and has a poor sense of justice and fairness. Will not recommend this firm to my friends. "Also in 2009, both houses of Congress introduced legislation known as the BRAVE Act1 that would certify veterans judged by the VA to have total disability (that is, having a combined rating of 100% or a rating of individual unemployability [IU]) as meeting the medical requirements of the disability programs administered by SSA. Essentially, a veteran with a rating of total disability would not have to undergo the medical portions of SSA's disability determination to be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits." https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v74n3/v74n3p1.html

Horrible horrible horrible!! I had this law office take on my military divorce case and they're all about the money. Im assuming they have so many clients that they've lost sight of the QUALITY of service that should be provided to every clients that pays money. My case was handled in the temple office. Susan green never returns phone calls. No updates/ information was provided to me about my case, specifics dealing with military divorces, court date etc. Two days prior to my court date i was given the time i needed to be at the belton courthouse (im not from the area so an address would've been nice). My decree was sent via email and i was told that i needed to hurry and send it back because there was a rush. Why were we rushing? A face to face appointment to go over the decree would've been professional and showed that they gave a damn. I was never told who was representing me in court and had no idea of how the person even look. The morning of court google gave me the wrong courthouse in belton and i had to call the office to find out who i was to be in contact once in the courtroom (the office told me brent would be there. I had to google brent to even know what he looked like). Long story short these people are all about the money and do not have the clients best interest in mind.

My ex-husband and I agreed to a divorce in late 2010. Someone has to file, so I did. I spoke with Mr. Laughlin in the initial interview and he assigned me to his associate, Mr. N. J. Gaunt. My ex and I wrote out our separation agreement and division of property. In it I gave him the house we were living in. I would move out and find something else. Although we split the cost of the attorney’s fees, Mr. Gaunt was my attorney. At no point did Mr. Gaunt point out, mention, or suggest anything about what might become problems with the division of our property or a joint mortgage. I returned to the office within a year because my ex was now chronically arrears in the payment on HIS house but was dragging my credit down. I went back to the office for assistance or advice and got the ‘too bad, so sad’ response because there was nothing in the paperwork that addressed the joint mortgage. When I thought back on it, Mr. Gaunt was going through or had gone through a divorce of his own and had mentioned discontent with his ex over issues with child custody. You pay your money to an attorney to look into the dark corners, smooth out the creases, and interpret the fine print. I could have typed up my own paperwork and filed and gotten this result for a lot less money.

It sure would be nice if I could be leaving a five-star rating here today. Unfortunately, not in my case. Instead, one star is one too many. I want to start by saying that I have nothing against Lane personally. He's probably a great person. For some people he may have represented them properly and kept them informed with the right amount of professionalism and due diligence we all expect to get from our attorney. He might have put forth the right amount of push forwardness that you needed him to give. He may have kept on top of things. He may have put in the due diligence to bring forth a fair outcome for them. They may be satisfied with his quality of performance. However, he didn't give me that level of professionalism. After 1 1/2 I had no choice but to accept the facts and seek counsel elsewhere. I hired Lane Heginbotham to represent me with my divorce. And of course, when he gave the consultation It all sounded great. If only I had known what a mistake, I was getting myself into. My divorce went nowhere. I was left feeling alone, misinformed, deceived and improperly represented. I trusted that I would be given a fair and equal representation by Lane. I was very wrong, and my time and money was wasted. As we all know those are rather important in everyone's lives. It became clear that my case wasn't important enough to him. Why file motions against the opposing side and then not follow through with them. Why were the temporary orders never followed through with? My "someday" ex-husband was allowed to disobey the standing order multiple times, make up his own rules, his counsel was allowed to be as leisure as they wanted with every request asked from them and nothing was done about it. I can't help but think that if I had behaved like such, I could rest assure the opposing counsel would have done something about it. That is most certain. Why make excuses for the opposing side and allow them to stall and drag out a divorce that should have been done and over with even with COVID, within a year or even much less. It's not like were Hollywood stars here. Lane would say he's working on this and that and I would wait and wait and wait... Just to find out that no progress had been made. "We're waiting to hear back from the opposing counsel" became an in every conversation sort of thing. I felt like asking if he was representing me or my husband. Then finally after hearing every excuse one can be told by their attorney as to why nothing was happening, it became obvious that my case didn't really matter. I was as transparent as I could be with Lane. I wanted to move forward with my divorce so I could move on with my life. I expected to be treated with dignity and respect. He didn't need to lead me along by telling me that the opposing counsel had dropped the ball when the truth be known he (Lane) dropped the ball! I trusted Lane to give my case as much effort and attention as he would any other case. Yet again the joke was on me just like in my marriage. Ha, Ha. This was not good attorney ethical standards by a long shot. I guess if you don't really understand or care about what your client is going through, how their whole life is hanging by a thread, then I guess it just doesn't really matter to you. Therefor you don't put in what's needed to get good reviews. How can a 50/50, non-contested, no minor children divorce be dragged out like this? Shouldn't there be a timeline of some kind. Can you just stall a divorce for as long as you so choose? Has our JUSTICE system turned into a JUST "US" system? Where's the justice here where's the humaneness in this. You may not be going through what I'm going through, but I hired you to be mindful and act like you are. That's what makes the difference between an attorney/lawyer who will represent you to the best of their ability and one who puts your case on the back burner for over a year. Good luck to those who choose to move forward with Lane Heginbotham @ Harris Law Office.

Do not hire this attorney. This attorney was hired by a friend and I have never seen an attorney work so hard against their own client to HELP the attorney on the other side. Run as fast as you can from this firm. Most positive reviews come from when Mr. Harris was alive, he has since passed. The office staff is rude and not very helpful.

Lane did not fight for me at all. Lynn Libersky out argued him and Lane seemed scared of the other attorney. He got what he asked as far as payment, but did nothing to help me. Worthless.

Mr. Valdez has no business holding a Texas bar license to practice any kind of law whatsoever. I have submitted a formal complaint/grievance to the state bar. He was a court appointed lawyer for a case i had in county court 186 in S.A. He missed completely more than one court appointment. A judge during his absence asked the court clerks in a scheduled appointment "is this the same Jerry Valdez that always shows up late if at all ? ". The clerk simply nodded and said "yes your honor". That's to say he has a well established reputation for being tardy and even absent from scheduled court proceedings. Do not for any reason hire this man. He is a crook, a lier, and has no business practicing law in Texas or any other state for that matter. I will work tirelessly to have him disbarred as he is a detriment to legal community as a whole.

This guy lies, he's not a good lawyer at all. He will not work for you, he works for the courts. No return phone calls, no visits in jail to discuss my case. I only saw him the day of my trial for which as stated he did not fight for me.

July 2013 we started this divorce. No fighting , simple non contestant . It's February 2015 and our case was done in January, I still don't have a copy of the decree. She rescheduled , and forgot many things, Got a lot of information wrong. I'm scared to get the final paper back because I have feeling it is wrong. During the process of us being told our court date 1 business day in advance , and that's because I called or she would have forgot . Her receptionist is not professional at all, and very rude even considering all the mistakes. I still don't have answers to all our questions like the attorney general I was told " they will call you". No it shouldn't work that way. I'm very unnerved and would NEVER recommend her for anything!!!

What a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Can Do for You

A Social Security and Disability lawyer specializes in helping individuals navigate the complex process of applying for and securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. These lawyers assist clients in filing applications, gathering necessary medical evidence, appealing denied claims, and representing them in hearings before administrative law judges. A lawyer can help maximize the chances of approval by ensuring that the paperwork is accurate, deadlines are met, and legal standards are addressed.

If you are disabled and unable to work, or if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied, a Social Security and Disability lawyer can guide you through the legal process to obtain the benefits you’re entitled to.

When Should I Hire a Social Security & Disability Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer in the following situations:

  • Applying for SSDI or SSI benefits: The application process for disability benefits can be complex, with strict requirements and documentation. A lawyer can assist in completing the application correctly and submitting the required medical evidence to improve your chances of approval.
  • Denied disability claim: If your initial claim for SSDI or SSI benefits has been denied, a lawyer can help file an appeal and represent you in hearings. Many claims are denied initially, and having legal representation during the appeal process significantly increases the chances of success.
  • Requesting reconsideration: After an initial denial, you have the right to request reconsideration of your claim. A lawyer can help present new medical evidence or correct any errors in your original application.
  • Hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ): If your reconsideration request is denied, you may request a hearing before an ALJ. A lawyer can represent you during the hearing, preparing you to answer questions and presenting a strong case based on your medical and work history.
  • Proving medical conditions: If your disability involves complex medical conditions, a lawyer can help gather expert medical testimony or additional evidence to demonstrate that your condition meets the legal criteria for disability.
  • Overpayments and cessation of benefits: If the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims you were overpaid or attempts to terminate your benefits, a lawyer can assist in challenging the decision and protect your right to continue receiving benefits.
  • SSI for low-income individuals: If you are applying for SSI, which is based on financial need in addition to disability, a lawyer can help ensure that your financial records are correctly submitted to meet SSA’s strict income and asset limits.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid mistakes that could delay or jeopardize your claim.

What Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Do?

A Social Security and Disability lawyer provides a range of services to help individuals navigate the application and appeals process for SSDI or SSI benefits. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing initial applications: A lawyer can help prepare and file your SSDI or SSI application, ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately and medical evidence is included.
  • Gathering medical evidence: A lawyer works with your doctors and healthcare providers to collect medical records, treatment histories, and expert opinions to support your disability claim.
  • Filing appeals: If your initial application is denied, a lawyer can file an appeal and guide you through the reconsideration process, ensuring that any additional documentation or evidence is provided.
  • Representing you in hearings: A lawyer will represent you in front of an administrative law judge, helping you prepare for the hearing and arguing your case to demonstrate that your disability prevents you from working.
  • Handling deadlines and paperwork: A lawyer will ensure that all deadlines are met, and that any requests for additional information from the SSA are responded to promptly.
  • Negotiating settlements (for private disability insurance claims): If your disability benefits claim involves private disability insurance (in addition to or instead of SSDI/SSI), a lawyer can help negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company.
  • Fighting benefit terminations or overpayment claims: If the SSA attempts to terminate your benefits or claims you were overpaid, a lawyer can defend you in administrative proceedings or file for a waiver or reconsideration.

How Are Social Security & Disability Lawyers Paid?

Social Security and Disability lawyers are typically paid on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if your case is successful, either through the approval of your disability benefits or winning an appeal. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The fee is usually 25% of your past-due (backpay) benefits, but no more than $7,200. This fee structure is set by the SSA, and lawyers cannot charge more than this amount for SSDI or SSI cases.
  • No cost for future benefits: Lawyers are not entitled to any portion of your future monthly disability benefits. Their fee is strictly limited to a percentage of your backpay.
  • Additional costs: In some cases, you may need to pay for additional expenses, such as obtaining medical records or expert witness testimony. These costs are usually minimal, but it’s essential to ask your lawyer about any additional expenses upfront.

It’s essential to confirm fee arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid misunderstandings.

How Much Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer is typically structured around the contingency fee system outlined by the SSA. General cost information includes:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer’s fee is capped at 25% of your backpay, with a maximum of $7,200. For example, if you are awarded $10,000 in backpay, the lawyer will receive $2,500 (25%), and you will receive the remaining $7,500.

Overall, there is no financial risk in hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, as they only get paid if your case is successful.

Top Questions to Ask a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

Before hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with Social Security Disability cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling SSDI and SSI cases similar to yours, particularly if you have a complex medical condition.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Confirm that the lawyer charges a contingency fee and that you won’t owe any fees unless your claim is successful. Ask if there are any additional costs for medical records or other expenses.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Disability claims can take time, especially if you’re appealing a denial. Ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what the typical timeline is for cases like yours.
  5. How will you help me prepare for my hearing?
If your case is going to a hearing before an administrative law judge, ask the lawyer how they will help you prepare for testimony and present your medical evidence effectively.
  6. What happens if I’m denied again?
Ask about the next steps if your reconsideration or appeal is denied, including the possibility of further appeals to federal court.

How to Check the Credibility of a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable Social Security and Disability lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for Social Security experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in Social Security and Disability law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on Social Security Disability matters.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Membership in organizations like the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to representing disability claimants.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Medical records: Bring copies of your medical records, including doctor’s notes, test results, treatment histories, and any disability-related diagnoses.
  • List of medications and treatments: Provide a detailed list of any medications you are taking, treatments you have received, and ongoing medical care related to your disability.
  • Denial letters (if applicable): If your disability claim has been denied, bring a copy of the denial letter from the SSA, along with any documentation related to your appeal.
  • Work history: Provide information about your previous jobs and work history, including details about how your disability has impacted your ability to work.
  • Social Security application (if already filed): If you’ve already submitted an application, bring a copy of the application and any correspondence you’ve had with the SSA.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you have about the legal process, the lawyer’s fees, and what to expect in terms of timelines and outcomes.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your situation.
