I definitely appreciate an awesome attorney. Mr. Abrams and his team always answered my text messages, emails, and returned my phone calls. I never felt gaslighted or ignored by anyone. Mr. Abrams took the time to explain everything to me via over the phone or in-person on the process, hold up, or if they had questions of me. I would recommend him to anyone who ask. Thank you Mr. Abrams and Liz (secretary). Appreciate you.

I would not hire this firm to defend me in a jaywalking case. If you need someone with courage and a backbone to be on your side, look elsewhere. The attorney on the other side of the case even said I was correct in my claims, but this firm refused to engage. He refused to read my emails because (like Dr. Fauci) said they were too long, despite the fact that I had given him a $1,000 retainer. I wouldn't even had known about it had I not called him, and that's when he actually LAUGHED at me. I will be lodging a complaint with the Illinois BAR. I wish there was a zero star. RUN AWAY!!! FAST!!!!

I was referred through the Chicago Bar Association referral service. Mr. Rotman was put on a $500 retainer to write one letter to opposing counsel in an attempt to close out a personal matter. After the initial consultation - I never heard from Mr. Rotman again. I never was copied on the correspondence nor did he ever follow up regarding the outcome. After several months, I wrote to Mr. Rotman to close my account. He then sent me a bill for nearly $300 in additional services that he claims he performed - none of which he has provided copies of to me nor was he even instructed to do so on our behalf. His website states the initial consultation is free; however, that too, showed up on his bill. I wrote to Mr. Rotman asking him to review our account and correct the bill. He ignored my letter and just sent another bill. I will be filing a complaint with the IARCD.

Jon took care of a bankruptcy for me and it went well. It was my only bankruptcy so I have no experience to base it on. He also attempted a tax settlement case which was just a disaster. If you retain him as your lawyer my advice is to keep EVERY written document and get a paid receipt on every payment. If you agree upon something, put it in ink! If I had a do over, I would have hired someone different.

I contacted this lawyer for help in a family member's case. I stayed up until 1:30 am to get everything he needed to him since he told me we would speak the following Monday, just for him to give me an email address that didn't work, then tell me to work it out with his secretary and he would be out of the office until Tuesday. He always talked over me and his general manner was belittling. I do not recommend this lawyer.

Unethical, uses excuses. Refuses to represent or help. As I said they use excuses. They represent a person and after they win a case. They continue to represent that said person. Without fairness, or justice. The founding fathers would be ashamed of the mockery you have made of a system.

What an awful experience. My teenage son was assaulted by his father and Prairie State agreed to represent me (us) in a modification of visitation. My son was very traumatized by what had happened and felt traumatized again after this. Not ONCE, not EVER, did the attorney agree to meet us in person. It would take many days, or sometimes a week or longer, to even get a return call. Court date after court date the attorney NEVER, NOT ONCE, showed up in court! This went on for MONTHS. The Prairie State attorney would just “ counsel” me over the phone as to what to say or do…..and that is IF I was lucky enough to even get a call back. The attorneys “ counseling “ advise was pretty much useless, as my ex’s attorney was there and would frequently object to me speaking because I wasn’t phrasing something correctly. Even the judge asked me where our representation was at and why was she not there. Thank goodness that the advocates were there to at least give my son and I some emotional support and could try to make recommendations after each court appearance. I would say easily that half of the time we would show up to court to find out the other attorney had requested to change the court date…. I was never notified as apparently they were contacting Prairie State as they were the ones who were supposedly representing us. Finally, after MONTHS, of court dates, a modified order was ordered by the judge. HIS attorney agreed to write up the new order since MY attorney was never present in court. Prairie State mailed me a copy of the “modified “ order HIS attorney mailed them…..it included things the judge ordered changed, BUT also other changes NOT ordered by the judge ( things like he won’t be responsible for carrying health insurance on our son any longer, things like that). I called Prairie State right away after getting the modified order and requested a call regarding and explained what the issue was. After a good week or so, the Prairie State attorney called me wanting to know what the problem was. I explained to her IF she would check court records for what the judge ordered against the original order, she would see that his attorney was making other changes not ordered by the judge or approved by me. I never heard from the Prairie State attorney again nor did she return any of my calls after that. Then the Prairie State attorney, after about 2 months, sends me a letter stating that she is considering the case closed for lack of communication with her… what a complete joke! This was by far one the most horrible things that my son or I have ever had to go through … for an attor I’m sure if I had money like my ex and could of afforded to pay money for representation, this experience would of been at least a little less traumatic. Shame on them!

Michael Massino doesn't show up to court on time which the Judge does not appreciate. When the office was called looking for him, he was still at the coffee shop. Michael Massino is not prepared with your paperwork, he will ask you to submit papers over and over again because they can't find the original. He is unorganzied and not knowledgeable about the law. Michael will let the opposing counsel take the lead and never initiates anything. He is easily pushed around by the opposing council. Michael Massino will ask you to sign false documents to settle. The office staff is unprofessional and rude. Avoid.

Avoid this man at all costs. My father died when I was 17, and rather than wrapping up the estate quickly to ease the suffering of my sister, brother and I, he dragged it out for - get this - FOUR years just to get our money. It has been devastating and I'm so disappointed in the cruelty of it. It got to the point that my siblings and I couldn't even reach him because he avoided our case for months at a time. Do yourself a favor and never even google his name again -- only go to him if you're looking to get scammed in a time of grief.

I think he charged me for the homes owner exempt which I applied for myself since I just moved in the property less than one year in 2008. Then he kept billing me after I paid him half of the exemption. Never no more. Be weary as those complaining on here.

My experience has been less than desirable. We hired Mr. Walsh to appeal our 2009 real estate taxes. We received a bill for his services in 2014. How do I verify if I've been previously billed? After many attempts to contact Mr. Walsh to inquire about the bill, he fails to return any of our calls. He then proceeds to send our bill (which I believe to be erroneous) to a collection attorney. Our credit rating is threatened. This is poor business practice at best. Strongly discourage anybody from hiring Christopher Walsh.

My experience with Attorney Curtis Ross was nothing short of a nightmare. From the outset, he displayed a level of rudeness and disrespect that was utterly appalling. When I sought clarification on certain legal matters, he dismissed my concerns with the utmost arrogance, labeling my questions as "idiotic." Instead of fulfilling his role as a legal advocate, he left me to fend for myself in court, all the while painting a false picture of me as argumentative. His complete lack of support and guidance was both shocking and deeply disappointing. Save yourself the headache and avoid hiring Curtis Ross at all costs. I send the same to him in email that he agreed for non payment. Conveniently he did not acknowledge. And he send email to property tax officer that he withdraw his petition. After 7 months he send a bill for 780 $. I called him and send an email that we requested for non payment. He said I did not agree in written so conversation in phone is not considered. What a Tax Lawyer Can Do for You

A tax lawyer specializes in the complex area of tax law, offering legal advice and representation on matters related to tax compliance, disputes with tax authorities, and tax planning. Tax lawyers help individuals, businesses, and organizations navigate the intricacies of federal, state, and local tax laws. They ensure that clients are compliant with tax regulations, minimize tax liabilities, and represent them in audits, appeals, or disputes with tax authorities such as the IRS.

Whether you need assistance with personal taxes, corporate tax strategy, or resolving an audit, a tax lawyer can protect your rights and help you manage your financial responsibilities.

When Should I Hire a Tax Lawyer?

Hiring a tax lawyer is advisable in several situations where tax issues are complicated, disputes arise, or legal strategies are necessary to manage tax liability. Common reasons to hire a tax lawyer include:

  • Tax audits or disputes with the IRS: If you are facing an audit or have received a notice of deficiency from the IRS, a tax lawyer can represent you and defend your rights during the process.
  • Tax debt relief: If you owe back taxes or face significant tax liabilities, a tax lawyer can help negotiate a payment plan, settlement, or Offer in Compromise with the IRS.
  • Tax planning for businesses or individuals: A tax lawyer can advise on strategies to minimize tax liabilities through legal deductions, credits, and other tax-saving mechanisms.
  • International tax issues: If you have foreign assets or income, a tax lawyer can help you comply with international tax laws, such as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) or Foreign Bank Account Reporting (FBAR) requirements.
  • Tax fraud or evasion accusations: If you're being investigated or charged with tax fraud or evasion, a tax lawyer can provide a defense and negotiate with the authorities to minimize penalties.
  • Corporate tax law compliance: Businesses, especially large corporations, benefit from the expertise of a tax lawyer who can handle complex issues such as mergers and acquisitions, employee benefits, and international tax planning.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: A tax lawyer can help you minimize estate taxes and ensure your assets are passed on efficiently through trusts, wills, and other tax-efficient structures.

Hiring a tax lawyer early can prevent costly mistakes and ensure you are fully compliant with all applicable tax laws.

What Does a Tax Lawyer Do?

A tax lawyer provides a wide range of services to assist clients with tax compliance, tax planning, and legal disputes. Their key responsibilities include:

  • Tax planning and advisory: Helping individuals and businesses plan their tax strategies to reduce liability, avoid penalties, and maximize deductions and credits.
  • Representing clients in tax disputes: Defending clients in disputes with the IRS or state tax authorities, including audits, appeals, and collections actions.
  • Filing Offers in Compromise: Negotiating settlements with the IRS for clients who owe more than they can afford to pay.
  • Handling tax litigation: Representing clients in tax court or other legal proceedings if a tax dispute escalates beyond the administrative level.
  • Estate and gift tax planning: Advising clients on how to structure their estate to minimize estate and gift taxes, including creating trusts, family partnerships, or charitable giving plans.
  • Assisting with tax fraud investigations: Defending clients accused of tax fraud, evasion, or criminal tax offenses.
  • International tax compliance: Advising clients with offshore assets on U.S. tax compliance and reporting requirements, including FATCA and FBAR.

How Are Tax Lawyers Paid?

Tax lawyers typically charge for their services in various ways, depending on the complexity of the work involved and the nature of the legal assistance required. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many tax lawyers charge by the hour, especially for complex cases or ongoing legal work such as audit defense, tax litigation, or corporate tax planning. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as preparing a legal document, filing an Offer in Compromise, or handling a routine audit, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For businesses or individuals with ongoing tax needs, a lawyer may require a retainer, which is an upfront payment used to secure the lawyer’s services and billed against as work is completed.
  • Contingency fee: In rare cases, particularly when negotiating settlements or resolving tax debts, a lawyer may charge a contingency fee based on the outcome of the case. This means they only get paid if they succeed in reducing your tax liability.

Always ask about the fee structure during the initial consultation to avoid surprises and ensure you understand how the lawyer will charge for their services.

How Much Does a Tax Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a tax lawyer depends on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the specific services required. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Simple tax issues: For straightforward cases such as filing an Offer in Compromise or handling a routine audit, fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500.
  • Complex tax disputes: For more complicated cases, such as defending against tax fraud accusations, handling a significant IRS audit, or resolving international tax issues, costs can range from $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the time and effort involved.
  • Hourly rates: Tax lawyers typically charge between $200 and $600 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or cases involving high-stakes outcomes.
  • Flat fees: For specific services, such as tax planning for an estate or preparing a legal document, a flat fee may range from $1,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the task.

Always get a detailed estimate of fees during your consultation so you can plan your budget accordingly.

Top Questions to Ask a Tax Lawyer

Before hiring a tax lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with tax law?
Ensure the lawyer has specific experience handling cases or issues similar to yours, whether it’s IRS disputes, corporate tax planning, or estate taxes.

How to Check the Credibility of a Tax Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable tax lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for specific tax law expertise: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in tax law and have handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s expertise and service.
  • Ask for references: A credible tax lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their ability to handle complex tax matters.
  • Look for professional affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Bar Association’s Section of Taxation or the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) can indicate that the lawyer stays current with tax law developments.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a tax lawyer, it’s essential to come prepared with all relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Tax returns and records: Bring copies of recent tax returns, especially those related to the issue you're facing.
  • IRS correspondence: If you’ve received notices from the IRS or state tax authorities, bring all relevant documentation.
  • Financial records: Bring records of income, expenses, assets, and any other relevant financial documents that the lawyer may need to understand your tax situation.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions to ask the lawyer about your case, the legal process, and the potential outcomes.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any interactions with the IRS or tax authorities, including audits, notices, or payment demands.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and help the lawyer assess your situation effectively, providing you with the best legal advice moving forward.
