In 2009, I was ordered to be removed after my conditional residency expired. At the time, my legal team tried several options to have my deportation order dismissed, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. In 2014, I was placed on an order of supervision (OSUP) with ICE and have been checking in since then. In 2018, I was ordered to present proof of my one-way plane ticket for return to my country at my next check-in, which was a very frightening time for me and my family. The thought of being separated indefinitely without a chance of my return was heartbreaking. Through other litigation procedures, I was able to remain temporarily and continue with OSUP check-ins. Fast forward to 2024, I met with my new attorney Carolina Collado and the litigation paralegal, Melody Perkins. They suggested filing a joint motion to reopen and dismiss the removal order. I was initially hesitant since I had previously attempted this in 2018 without any luck. However, they both gave me the confidence to retry and file the motion, which was done around March/April of 2024. On August 8th, I received amazing news that ICE agreed to join the motion to reopen with the board of immigration. This is the best news I’ve had in 15 years on this legal journey. Though we have a few more steps to go, I eagerly await in hopes of regaining residency and finally having the freedom my family and I deserve.
