My wife and I made an appointment to discuss updating our wills. Since we're not exactly the Rockefellers, we didn't expect to run into any trouble, but we did: Prior to our appointment, Skipper & Skipper emailed us some documents, including a “worksheet” requesting rather extensive personal and financial data (social security numbers, banking information, account balances, etc.). Of course, we were willing to provide all the information germane to drafting our new wills, but their “worksheet” seemed unnecessarily invasive (more akin to data collected on a mortgage application). Frankly, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Like many Americans, we are concerned about privacy, security and identity theft. We don't splay-out our financial and personal data to anyone unless we understand, specifically, why such disclosures are warranted – and we certainly don't surrender information simply because someone wants it “for the file.” Since we had no prior relationship with Skipper & Skipper (we just found them on Google), the prudent thing to do was meet with them - get to know them a little - talk about our needs - discuss the particulars of our wills, and then submit the information required to draft the documents. Unfortunately, we never got that far. Upon our arrival, the two ladies working reception demanded our I.D.s and the completed worksheet. We presented our I.D.s but not the worksheet. We politely tried to explain our concerns about it, but they wouldn't hear it. In fact, they seemed rather aghast at our audacity. They immediately became defensive – as if we were attempting to defraud Skipper & Skipper by defying their sacred worksheet protocol. Again, we tried to explain, but they couldn't let it go. It became obvious: we weren't getting past the reception desk without bending the knee on the worksheet. It didn't matter what we said. The worksheet doctrine wasn't to be trifled with. The ladies even scrambled to present a waiver for us to sign, indemnifying Skipper & Skipper from any liability resulting from our brazen worksheet intransigence. It was really quite strange. Somehow, in a matter of minutes, the whole encounter went from awkward, to annoying, to threatening … and it was time to leave. Clearly, we had come to the wrong place. I made eye-contact with my wife. She knew what I was thinking; I knew what she was thinking, “We're out of here!” We retrieved our I.D.s, thanked the ladies for their time and walked-out. To be fair, I'm not suggesting the Skipper & Skipper “worksheet” is in any way improper. The worksheet may, in fact, be an excellent and benevolent tool. Moreover, their privacy and security procedures could be second to none, and their work might be absolutely brilliant. But we will never know; we couldn't make it past reception to discuss it with anyone.

Attorney Stephen Skipper is brilliant, fair and kind. I highly recommend him if you are ever in need of an attorney.
