I, as a single parent, put three children through college with Parent Plus Loans. Paying those off at one time put me in a terrible bind but it was the only way to give them the footing they needed in employment. I had 25 year payment plans on all three. I was devastated but what could I do. Then I got sick and ended up retiring early due to illness and the inability to work. Right at that time COVID hit and payments were suspended for a time. That was a big help because now I am on a fixed income. But with payments beginning again the panic started to set in. My mother heard Rae Kaplan's interview on WGN Radio in Chicago. I gave them a call and set up an appointment to speak with Rae. She was so professional, polite and encouraging. She gave me hope! We got all of the paperwork completed in record time because my doctor was so in agreement that going back to work just was not possible for me. I entered into a contract with the law firm and they went to work. Soon I got a letter that my case was under review and I would be contacted when a final decision was made on my case. A few weeks later my fees were waived and I just feel blessed because I honestly didn't know what I was going to do when the payments were going to begin again, especially for so many years!
