Excellent communication. Anytime I received correspondence regarding my bankruptcy Mr. Williams was very responsive to get me in for an appointment and sometimes could get immediate answers to my questions over the telephone. A very trouble free attorney. Very knowledgeable in his practice. You pay a bit more, but you are getting someone who has experience, who will fight for your case, and takes time to make sure you have a trouble-free experience. If you find a cheaper lawyer then you get what you pay for. Plain and simple.

I met Dick B. Williams during my personal bankruptcy about six years ago and was impressed by his attention to what was in my best interest as a client. When compared to local attorney's, he sat down with me before taking any money, thoroughly explained the protocol and left me with the question, "Is this the lawyer for you?" Although he sometimes appeared to take his time with the attention I believed was necessary for my case, he helped me to understand the statutes and response times were not as detrimental once the process had begun. I have since referred several family members and friends to him, and to there satisfaction, he always kept it true to what was in their personal best interest. His knowledge exceeded my expectations when a personal issue came during a family bankruptcy and he refused to act until her best interest was protected and even though that meant no bankruptcy he appeared ok and gladly refunded her money! Great JOB!

I called Dick B. "Rich" Williams shortly after being injured in an auto accident Dec '06 that was not my fault. He referred me to another attorney in the area who they had some history with, and promised to keep up with my case. About six months later, he informed me of some behavior by the other attorney that he & his partner/father did not approve of, and they supported me in terminating my relationship with that attorney and agreed to work with another one that I knew in Chicago. Rich continued to be an effective local "interpreter" for me throughout the case, which was eventually settled to my satisfaction a couple years later. I have worked in financial services for nearly 20 years, so trustworthiness & prompt and effective communication are important to me. I have recommended Mr. Williams & his firm several times since then to clients & friends for a variety of legal needs - estate planning, business disputes, divorce, traffic defense - and each of them had a comparable experience. I will continue to refer people to Mr. Williams & his firm.

Mike Fritz is an amazing attorney. I hired him to help me with my divorce, as well as custody case. Mike did an excellent job keeping me informed as well as dealing with problems quickly and efficiently. He took time to get to know me as a person and review my case. He worked hard to get the best case possible for me and went the extra mile to represent me. He won my custody battle which seemed absolutely impossible to win at times, and was extremely helpful thru the whole process. I owe mike a lot more than a thank you, I owe him my utmost gratitude and respect for how well he handled not only my case but me as well.

Having never needed legal counsel before, Mr Schierer spent the time to explain the process and all outcomes. His patience, understanding, and legal knowledge was beyond my expectations. No question was deemed “stupid”. He responds calmly and quickly to what I deemed emergencies. Cool and collected in the courtroom, Mr Scheirer is a force to be reckoned with. The icing on the cake is being greeted by Brandon at the front desk. Always was he friendly and efficient at his job as paralegal. I will forever be thankful to Mr Schierer and his team and the work they did for my family and me.

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of East Peoria, Illinois?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
