I had a terrible experience with another law firm, and was about to give up and just stay married. Ugh! Then I met Tammy Begun, Esq., and along with her partner in crime, Jackie, they were able to take a terrible situation and resolve it for me. Before you read my review please scroll down and look at the pictures of me with my family. As you read this, please keep in mind that without Dave Martella those pictures would never have existed. I would have been serving anywhere from 5-25 years in prison for A CRIME I DID NOT COMMIT. To clarify, there is no question I shot at a police officer, just that the police officer never identified himself and was trying to strike me with his car at the time (see picture). My charges were false, my charging documents were false, just about everything was false. I was incarcerated without bond, vilified in the media, and honestly persecuted. My case quickly turned political, and it really seemed like the entire weight of the world was crashing down on me in my little cell in MCCF. Yet it was Dave Martella who slowly began peeling back the onion, bit by bit, chipping away one fact at a time. He was able to get me out on a bond in 90 days (again, it should be noted I was accused of shooting at a police officer). Over the course of 18 months, in a manner befitting Sun Tzu or Von Clausewitz he parried and then countered every "fact" the state thought they had. This was because of Mr Martella's methodical approach to my case; chip away and chip away until their case simply has no structure to support it, and that is exactly what happened.  There wasn't flashy talk and self aggrandisement; just quiet, well thought out professionalism. By a little more than a year in, the state honestly had no idea what they were walking into if they were to take me to trial. Our defense was impregnable, and it was Mr Martella who had made it so. The case ended last month almost entirely in my favor. I maintained my business, my right to keep and bear firearms, my freedom, and walked away without conditions or a conviction . I cannot emphasize enough that Mr Martella saved my life and by extension my family. His staff of Vasquez, Z, fellow attorney Raquel Smith (The Queen of DUIs), Barry etc all kept me sane and informed during the darkest hours of my life.  If you are in trouble, do not hesitate to call Dave Martella. I believe men like him embody the ideals of American jurisprudence, and you can trust Mr Martella to work hard on your case and offer you the best defense you could possibly get. I would take a bullet for Dave Martella, that is a fact.

I had the pleasure of meeting Raquel Smith a few years ago when Covid pandemic was just beginning. For the first time in my life as a law-abiding citizen, I was arrested for a DUI under very questionable circumstances. My teenage kids who had been stellar students until COVID had trouble adjusting to virtual school learning. My husband was going through serious health problems. Needless to say, I was panicking like I have never done before. Finding Raquel Smith was a true blessing. She made my emotionally strenuous situation a lot easier. Her professional aptness and friendly demeanor eased a very trying time. Due to the pandemic, we worked together for about two years to get my case dismissed. There were days when scheduled court hearings were cancelled either because the prosecution was not ready or police officers not showing up for court and the Judge not granting immediate dismissal. It was a true nightmare, but Raquel’s presence in my life assured me that everything is going to be alright, and it was. She was always there. Sometimes whatever happens, happens for a reason. It certainly was in this case. Because of the delayed court proceedings, Raquel and I grew to know each other, and I got to appreciate her dedication to her clients. She is not interested in only winning cases; she is sincerely interested in winning cases TOGETHER with her clients. Her organized, intuitive, tenacious, and caring manner of defending her clients shows through and through. After my case was dismissed, Raquel made herself available for my other legal questions. For example, she was able to point me in the right direction to seek other knowledgeable lawyers for a case about power of attorney for a relative with dementia. More recently, this Spring, my son was arrested for unknowingly possessing a handgun that belonged to my military Veteran husband. My husband simply forgot to remove the weapon from his vehicle that my son borrowed to go to work. Without hesitation I hired Raquel Smith to represent us, and the case didn’t pass the initial trial. Raquel took care of everything. Fortunately, this was a very speedy case, and we didn’t get to interact with the other members of The Law Office of Barry H. Helfand. However, I am more than confident that I can recommend this office to anyone who has an unfortunate circumstance in their lives with legal issues. The care and efficiency Raquel provides at very fair fees is a pure gift to whoever is going through a rough time. The firm’s description of their values of commitment, vision, and dedication is very accurate. I have an attorney for life and will recommend them to my own friends, family, and professional acquaintances in case legal representation is needed for them.
