My wife and I had to travel to Michigan USA from Australia in an emergency situation to care for our son who had been severely injured in a motor vehicle accident which claimed the life of his partner. We had travelled under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) and on arrival were granted a statutory 90 day stay. Within about two weeks or so of our scheduled departure date, we realised that due to our son's health situation, there was no way we could leave him by himself at the end of the 90 day period. We then started researching our options for extending our stay.
