In response to what you wrote, I recently received unwanted contact from my ex-husband which happened because you advised me to drop a temporary restraining order 3 years ago. I'm surprised that as an attorney you don't keep personal files of your cases. It looks like by law you're supposed to have them for at least 5 years. I have emails asking you to treat me with more compassion, which you ignored. Also where you state that you won't be entertaining offers to send to my ex-husband's lawyer, where I negotiated against myself. I just read an email where you belittled my experience as a real estate agent and also said I was ranting about my ex-husband cheating on me. There's one where you said my words are powerless and you try to get me to fire you at the end of my case. My words hold great power, Arthur, hence your 1 star review. The MSA doesn't explicitly state that I was happy with your services. I wasn't. I am a victim of domestic violence and you treated me unfairly. You were in a position of trust and power. You made this much harder for me than it needed to be and I'm still dealing with the repercussions years later. It is worth noting that my divorce started out as a domestic violence case. During my divorce from 2020-2021 I was represented by Mr. Guess as a pro-bono attorney, referred to him as a client in financial need, through Northeast New Jersey Legal Services. While the relationship began well, Mr. Guess advised me that he was going through a divorce at the same time. His bias and personal experience was a conflict of interest for my case. The advice was to take what I could get, which resulted in me negotiating against myself for a settlement with less compensation than I deserved and was entitled to. Mr. Guess also did not push to have my ex-husband's bank accounts split, that were by NJ law mine too since we were married. Mr. Guess stated that I would not be asking so many questions and implied that I was wasting his time if I was paying for his service as opposed to being represented for free. Even though I can appreciate this aspect, I feel I was not treated fairly in a time of need. This was also not his area of expertise at the time and gave me advice about the TRO I filed while being separated that he was not sure of. Another thing is that he missed a meeting with the court, he didn't tell me, so we both missed it. He also didn't stand up for me when negative, untrue things were said about me by my ex-husband's attorney. Overall, as a women, I feel like he was not on my side. Social media says that he's hosting a divorce workshop, so hopefully he has more credentials now and willingness to help other women in a similar situation. Lastly, Mr. Guess implied racial undertones between myself and him which were untrue. Another difficult layer to navigate while going through the emotional pain of a divorce. All I can do is speak up which is my reason for leaving this review. This information will also be sent to the NJ Board of Ethics.
