Attorneys are not magicians. There's a limited range of outcomes that they can realistically achieve in any given case. What you want is an attorney who correctly understands that range, who clearly communicates it to you, and who is prepared, in order to leverage any opportunity to achieve an outcome at the better end of the range. Jeff did those things in my case, and together with a bit of luck, achieved a remarkable result -- a not guilty verdict at the Bronx TVB. It seems I end up with a speeding citation about once every 10 years. My previous two ended up dismissed, but I had the misfortune to get my third in the Bronx, which meant it would be handled by the Bronx TVB. Short story on the TVBs generally: they’re not fair courts. Generally speaking, in the rare event that the citing officer fails to appear twice, you can get your case dismissed; otherwise, you’re almost always going to be found guilty. When I first spoke with Jeff, he disabused me of the notion that it would be productive at TVB to argue a bunch of points that I was ready with — having the experience to know that, in practice, they would almost certainly just aggravate the TVB judge. Instead, he explained what was procedurally required for a radar/laser-based speeding citation in NYC, and how he would question the officer and likely be able to get my 4-point/12-over-the-limit citation down to a lower cost 3-point/10-over violation. When the time came for my hearing, precisely that portion of the testimony left a question as to whether the officer had followed the proper procedure. Jeff was ready to take advantage of it, and the judge granted his request for a not guilty verdict. Chance favors the prepared mind, and I am glad to have had an attorney who was prepared handling my case.
