Hiring John Painter is one of the best decisions I have ever made, truly worth every penny. He is not only incredibly smart, but very quick on his feet, exceptionally creative, but the value of his experience becomes clear once you see him in a courtroom - this man has seen it all and I can't say how important that is in these cases. Mr. Painter is a kind gentleman when you meet him, but don't let that fool you - he is a true bulldog and will put every ounce of sweat and effort into fighting for you. Mr. Painter left no stone unturned - challenging every point, making strong and legitimate objections (and repeating those as they came up again), pinning down witnesses and ultimately presenting some very novel legal arguments I don't think other lawyers would have tried or thought of. As I waited for my case to be called on trial day, I saw several attorneys defend their clients with mediocre arguments or otherwise simply accept guilty pleas, every single one of them being found guilty. Statistically for NC, that is what I would expect and I was preparing myself for the same. Mr. Painter had mentioned a novel legal argument when we first met, and I wasn't sure it would work but I also didn't expect an attorney to try something besides settling and hoping for the best sentencing outcome, as I believed my case was fairly clear cut. I blew way over both on scene and at the station, it wasn't particularly close. I am sure I would not have had the same outcome with another lawyer - not guilty. Mr. Painter follows every witness closely, taking notes that he uses to create a timeline that he somehow manages to refer back to with an uncanny ability to process all of that in his head in real time. Mr. Painter put on a truly remarkable performance, challenging every point made by the state, repeated objections that arose and came up again (one of which the state seemed to even acknowledge had put their case in a bit of a bind, and it certainly wasn't an obvious one I would have realized - and this wasn't the first time Mr. Painter had brought it up), and not leaving anything on the table for the judge to consider in favor of conviction without challenging its merit. Mr. Painter handled my case for three years, and kept me from making court appearances until the time was right. I was ultimately found not guilty, 100% due to this man and I feel (as I have seen many others on here mention) as though I owe him more than the legal fees I paid (which were probably a bit higher than some other attorneys at the time, but worth every penny and looking back I would have paid more). What an incredible relief when I had all but accepted that I was likely to be convicted, potentially having to wait several years before the asterisk on my record was removed (likely after the damage was already done). Do yourself a favor and go talk to Mr. Painter in order to put yourself in the best hands possible; you won't find his level of skill in another attorney and the consequences are too great not to.

I have used John Painter twice on two family related criminal cases almost 20 years apart. Both times I got exactly what I wanted. John listened to my situation and educated me on what my options were, John Painter billed me a very reasonable rate and kept me informed though out the process. Both times the cases were dismissed. Thats exactly what John said would happen. John has been a local criminal defense attorney for over 40 years. He not only knows everyone in the deck of cards he can pretty much predict what their going to do. He's been right every time. We all make mistakes in our life, some worse than others. I made a mistake and got a DUI. One bad night and my life got turned upside down. I hired John based off of several recommendations from friends and family members. He has a great reputation. Once I hired him I realized that he has a really big heart. He truly cares for his clients. He fought my case for a year and a half. In the end, John worked magic for me. He got my case dropped and now I have my life back. Thank you John. I owe you. I had a family member charged with DWI in 2017. After speaking with several life long residents of Union County they all said to go see John Painter if you want the best. At the consultation Mr. Painter took time to carefully review all the paperwork we had and saw numerous things that he questioned about the way the stop was handled. After hiring him, his office kept us informed of what he was doing and all we had to do was show up to court. He had the case continued many times until he had all the information he needed to appear before the Judge. After questioning the legality of the stop and presenting his case, the Judge agreed with him and the case was thrown out. He had other things in question just in case so he did not go in with just one argument. Very professional. Worth every penny of his fee. As I was told, if you want the Best in Union County go see John Painter.

Between the ages of 18 and 21 I just couldn't seem to learn my lesson. John will fight for you tooth and nail! Worth every penny for his services and I wouldn't trust another lawyer to take care of me. Recently he got my DUI dropped and speeding ticket reduced. Im a lucky guy and wouldn't be where I am today without him. Highly recommended

My dwi case was just dismissed. Hey it takes a while John isn't going to do what public defenders do and plead you guilty and then just try and get you the minimum sentence. He works to make sure the cops are on the up and up and this one violated several protocols. It took almost a year and a half but he's worth the money. Insurance alone would have cost more than he charged. If your in union county and get stopped for as much as jaywalking I would hire John!!!

Having been a sworn law enforcement officer for almost 17 years prior to a disability injury, I found myself in need of a quality, intelligent, overly competent, experienced, honest, trust worthy, and frankly the best trial lawyer around. As stated prior, in my 17 years of law enforcement I have had cases with many lawyers in all aspect of the law, criminal, civil, family, etc. During my career I always knew that should I, or my family be in a situation requiring the best trial lawyer there would never be a second thought about who to retain, that person being John Painter. I have had thousands of cases with many lawyers over the years. When I was a young officer and throughout my career John Painter taught me a lot about trail law, court precedent, N.C. and U.S. Supreme Court Rulings, as well as court room etiquette. John Painter at times would talk to me after a trial and tell me what I could have done a little better and or what I may have over looked. I know well beyond on a reasonable doubt and after being on the stand and cross examined by John Painter many times that he represented his clients with fierce fervor, dedication, commitment, and always with the best interest of his clients in mind. I say all this as both a private citizen and a prior 17 year law enforcement officer. Moreover, I also know that every law enforcement officer holds John Pinter in high regard and carries a healthy deserved respect for him as a person and lawyer. Many officers may not like me saying this, however I personally and professionally know that all officers have a healthy fear of him trying their cases. John Painter is highly educated in the law, to a degree well beyond the average lawyer. I can't state it enough that he is the best trail lawyer around. Again, during my career I was field training officer for all new officers. I also had a section of instruction and discussion on how to prepare case files, evidence collection, chain of custody, completeness and accuracy in report writing and note taking, and simply doing things the right way. And I always referred to prior cases I had with John Painter as well cases I observed that other officers had with John Painter. Simply put, John Painter is the most qualified, educated, experienced, honest lawyer I am aware of. Yes there are other great lawyers in Union County all of whom I also know personally and professionally. With that being said I highly recommend John Painter if you find yourself in need of the best lawyer, and once again this comes from both being a client of John Painter and also a 17 year career as law enforcement officer. So I feel I have an insight as to John Painter's ability, experience, honesty, and education representing clients and especially trial law. You will not be disappointed, unless you decide not to at least consult with John Painter. And of course a disclaimer, I was not asked nor obligated to write a review, especially this lengthy of a review regarding John Painter. I write this out of my own free will and respect for John Painter as a person and a lawyer. Being a law enforcement officer I am always asked who is the best lawyer, and number one on my list is John Painter. I found myself in a very serious situation, my life changed before my eyes. I will not mention what these charges were. I was told by a close friend that Mr. Painter was the best Union county had to offer and that is with out a doubt the truth. 3 long years of court, I watched as other clients trash talked John saying he was a bad lawyer....the man is wise and even if it seems he is doing nothing he is always working hard for you. If it had not been for John I would surely be in jail right now. I watched him work in a courtroom for 3 years and I would not trust a single other lawyer to ever help me.
