The purchase of the house has gone fine. As a cash buyer it was possible to do the whole thing online, which I think in a variety of instances could be easier overall. In my case the distance from the purchased house is about a one hour drive (Raleigh to Rocky Mount).
For me it wasn't a difficult burden to handle the purchase remotely using technology. On the other hand, I would think there could certainly be clients who might not have experience using computers, and so perhaps it could be possible to find some arrangement of some sort that's workable.
I've been helping my cousin in New York, who I think is about in his seventies, with using the computer, and so I'm glad that I've been able to help him to a certain extent.
I haven't had any sustained long term relationship with Parker Law over a period of years, but was referred to the firm by Moorefield Real Estate. And so I found the house I purchased on Zillow and so for the agent with Moorefield that I worked with I saw high ratings and good reviews on Zillow, and so I continued with the purchase. I also saw high ratings and good reviews for Moorefield and Parker Law from Google. I also visited the website and read the staff bios, and so I felt that this went along with the good reviews.
A few weeks after the closing date the firm asked for any feedback, and offered the suggestion to write an online review, and so can do so, and can share some thoughts.
EDIT 2022-10-17: I could add some additional thoughts to what I wrote above on 2022-10-12.
An additional thought on how it seemed to me that things went in terms of the purchase of the house is that once I contacted the agent at Moorefield I could then by referrals from Moorefield connect within a professional real estate ecosystem. From Moorefield I was referred to Parker, and Moorefield also had lists of inspectors, appraisers, and I think perhaps some other professionals. From Parker I got a list of surveyors. And so things have been going okay. (I could also do a brief review on Google for Moorefield).
These kinds of professional referrals might be better and more accurate than online reviews. Online reviews could also be accurate, but it could be sometimes that a professional gets downgraded because people who have a negative experience are a lot more likely to lash out and write a negative review then people for which it went fine. A lot of people may be totally okay with the services, but don't have the time to write a review.
Rocky Mount Public Utilities has a rather low Google rating, but, well, at least so far for me, I haven't had any problems. Like anything that could change over time, but I hope it'll be okay. I had to wait on hold for about 30 minutes, but then it got handled alright. So can see how things go.
But, anyway, in terms of getting information online, I would say that the Internet was quite useful in particular for getting general information about the overall process. I could ask questions to Google like, how does a buyer's agent work, what is the difference between appraisal and inspection, appraisers and inspectors etc.
The closer at Parker Law mentioned ALTA settlement statement, and I didn't know what that was, but could just do a search to get more information.
In the legal documents from Parker I didn't know what some of the language meant in terms of surveying, but could do searches to get the definitions of those terms.
I also did Google searches to try to decide whether or not I needed to have a survey done, and so I followed Parker's advice, and got one done. I'm not sure it was really strictly speaking totally necessary, but compared with the cost of the house it really wasn't that much money (about $850 or so). One way or another a survey could be useful in the future for getting a building permit for another structure, and I got the impression that the survey is useful for the preparation of the deed.
By moving from Raleigh to Rocky Mount I'm getting a lot lower housing cost, and so that additional cost for the survey was wholly manageable.
