I hired Troy several months back in desperation against a harassing landlord on the Oregon coast. He was a nice guy, knew how to be generically empathetic, and seemed intelligent — but it was bad help, and he was barely paying attention, even with my repeatedly making it clear I was happy to keep paying.
Really I’m typing this review because no one in search of good lawyering should have to suffer how bad Troy’s communication was. I got the continuous vibe that he knew he didn’t have a case worthwhile for his time and rather than give me a real referral, he low-key condescended. He truly was gone just after a spoonful of simple and shallow advice—not responding, and never an explanation. Troy might be a very good attorney, but I saw none of it. Portland Defender, please don’t reply here unless you’d like me to have a full body cringe that you’re more likely to respond to a google review than you are to my actual plea for help. By the way, my landlord stole my security deposit, just like I said he would, and just like you shrugged off to “cross that bridge when we get there.” We’re at that bridge and if you can’t tell, the money’s gone and so were you.

I reached out to Troy via Community Alliance of Tenants which paid for my initial consultation. Troy was patient and kind to me when I got overwhelmed with everything and I'm so grateful for that. He encouraged me to ask for more out of my settlement but made sure to check in with me before doing so. Very happy with the outcome of a very stressful situation.

Troy was very helpful in assisting me deal with my previous landlord. He was easy to work with, was quick with replies in communication, and explained the legal process as it went. I would definitely work with him again and recommend him to anyone being taken advantage of by their landlord.

Having to move out of state & start all over was in itself a scary change. Then not know anything about Oregon laws & what my rights were when having to go through the experience I did with the previous landlord. Troy was knowledgeable & kind. He made my experience smooth & never had me second guessing. I’m very thankful in many ways. But the most important to me was to finally be heard. My victory may seem small to the outside but looking in & knowing my story it’s only the beginning.
Thank you so much Troy for everything & especially your cute assistant :)
He very respectful :)

Troy is extremely good and effective at what he does. He helped me reach a settlement in a mold-related tenant-landlord dispute. Rather than hire him on contingency, we went the hourly route, which was quite expensive ($500/hr) and pretty standard for a lawyer, I gather, though he estimated he could wrap it all up in two hours or less, and he did. I was really pleased with how he represented me and would hire him again. (Hopefully will never have to though!) I highly recommend for tenant-landlord cases, and I trust he is amazing in many other areas of law.

I emailed Troy after being discriminated against by a potential landlord when I was applying for their home. I knew I had a very strong case. I wasn't sure exactly what type of lawyer this sort of issue is handled by so I asked him if this is a type of case he handles. He actually got back to me immediately and said yes he handles this type of case and asked for all the documents which I sent over immediately. I then didn't hear from him. I emailed him multiple times over about a week period. Mind you, he is aware that I only have 90 days to file a civil suit, according to BOLI. I asked for attorney recommendations on Nextdoor and someone recommended Troy so I reached out one last time. He actually responded this time. Didn't mention why he ghosted for a week but that's okay, I know a lot of attorneys are really busy. We set a phone consultation and had a great conversation. I felt like we were on the same page but did notice that his contingency fee was pretty high and he mentioned that he hasnt ever handled a case like mine. Still though, I liked him and told him I would like to move forward. He said he was going to send me over the fee agreement. That was over a week ago. He never sent the agreement over, he never emailed or called to say that he decided he can't take my case because maybe it's not in his scope. Just completely ghosted. I'm not going to chase him down so I retained another attorney. And turns out his area of practice wouldn't be suited for my case anyway since he is a landlord/tenant attorney and what I needed was a civil rights attorney. I wish he would have told me immediately when I first emailed him that no in fact this is not in his area of practice like I asked first thing. I can't speak to his actual legal skills because I never got past the consultation phase but personally I wouldn't want a lawyer who says he is going to move forward with your case and then completely ghosts you when he knows you only have a certain amount of days left to file a civil suit. This is not me trying to bash Troy, a lot of people seemed to have had a good experience with him, and I totally understand procrastinating on things but he DOES have a paralegal/legal assistant so it just seems more like it's a matter of not caring about certain clients/cases.

Troy was very helpful advising me on my rights as a tenant and looking over my lease to determine where I stood legally and factually. He was very personable and used analogy to explain how certain rules and regulations worked when looking over my lease.
The booking email said they would call me at the time of the appointment, but after 5 minutes I went ahead and called, so be aware of that if booking a consultation.
