Highly skilled law practice.

I bet you never thought "decent human being" and lawyer could reside in the same person, but JPI seems to have found them! I temped for them as a legal assistant in early 1998. I wasn't a regular employee or a client (well, we'll get to that), yet I was always treated like I was one of the gang. I was included in their Friday night outings after work, and spoken to like an equal. Mr. Pass, for being a name partner, is so down-to-earth - I've worked in D.C. law firms with junior associates who treated me with less respect - and I had more seniority than them! Despite working hard, I had a big drop in income from what I had been used to and needed, so JPI helped me file for bankruptcy and even represented me - and they didn't ask for a dime over the filing fees. All Mr. Pass wanted was to see me get to a better place in life. We stayed in touch as I left Pennsylvania to make that happen. Nearly 25 years later, as I write this, I can still call and ask his advice and chat with him, if he's not busy. How many people do you meet in a lifetime who are genuinely good people, who are good at what they do? How many of those people are lawyers? I mean, I can tell stories about lawyers I've worked with and how mercenary they are even in their private lives. The profession seems to attract that type. The law firm of JPI turns the idea of the stereotypical lawyer on its head. They're good people out to do good. It's like they never lost the idealism that drove them to go to law school. This should be the ideal boutique law firm.

I have worked with this firm, and Steve Winslow in particular, in various capacities over the last five years and I have been constantly impressed, not just by the quality of his work, which is immense, but also by his professionalism and responsiveness. In addition, he has consistently exhibited an incredible measure of patience in explaining to me and others the details and nuances of the law, which is an incredible skill/resource to have at your disposal.

I have worked with this firm for about four years, as Joe Pass and Steve Winslow represented my faculty's union for two years in our negotiations for our first contract and have remained our legal representation since that contract was achieved. Even before that negotiation, though, our university delayed and denied the negotiation for years, but this firm stood by and advocated for us, which speaks to the fundamental decency that distinguishes them: they are good lawyers but they are also people who care about the work that they do, playing a critical role in helping people get a bit farther in this life. Steve Winslow has personally taken every question, large or small, I've ever asked of him. He's never been dismissive or evasive, taking the time in email or on the phone to walk me through the issues of the question at stake, be it an immediate concern or a larger, more abstract one. He has personally responded to every email, call, or text that I have sent, and even though I know he and his firm to be incredibly busy, I've never felt rushed nor merely placated by these conversations. I should note that this is my first extensive relationship with a law firm of any kind, but I've now been through an 18 month negotiation with them and three years of grievances and arbitrations, they've never once been petty, they've always been professional, and they are nothing at all what I expected: I expected competence and expertise, which they bring with grace, I didn't expect such kindness.

He was always very responsive to all my inquires, concerns and questions and explained things so that I could easily understand. He was knowledgeable, professional and confident and I can’t thank him enough for representing me. I highly recommend Steve and the firm.
