Lawyers are much like mercenaries. You hire them to fight for you typically because you have some conflict where you need their help. Thus most lawyers work in an adversarial environment. When you hire someone you want them to accomplish your agenda, so you hire someone with a strong enough ability to do so. Having dealt with many lawyers I have seen this environment affect them differently. Some it becomes part of them, affecting their behavior towards clients. You can be left feeling like a very unintelligent bug that they have to deal with because you are not versed in law, or the dollar value is not worth their time, etc. There are some with the ability to successfully resolve your conflict and leave you feeling you were supported rather than one of the obstacles. Adam is one of these. We had a corporate family trust that had migrated through a number of banks via acquisitions. It ended up in a very large bank. The two family members most involved were older. One, a homemaker with no knowledge of business or banks, the other having a very unusual character. The relation with the bank was very adversarial to the point they used trust funds to hire an outside group to attempt to get the unusual executor declared incompetent and incited various government agencies.
