No effort on their part towards my disability case. I went out of my way in attempts to get the information needed for the case, spent months working on it, and my representative who constantly was on vacation threw me to the wayside and told me there was no case to be had. Complete waste of my time and I should of never considered this place to begin with.

I hired Elizabeth Rivera as my attorney for a complicated lawsuit, involving more than one party and including a corporation. As most people realize, the wheels of justice run slow. Covid interrupted my cases. However, even after all that, Elizabeth amazed me on many occasions. It was as if she had perfect recall of the details of all aspects of the case and quickly zoomed in on discrepancies by various parties. In court, she was professional, skilled and very prepared. I am happy with the results. In every aspect of the case I could win, I did. In the one aspect of the case that through no fault of Elzabeth I lost, Elizabeth's amazing court skills, used to argue against the outlandish attorney fees that the other side tried to make me pay, won me a favorable ruling. Do I recommend Elizabeth Rivera to others? Absolutely! Will I use her again, if needed? Absolutely! Do I have anything negative to say about her or any of her staff? NO!

To be fair to Mr. Worthley, he did suffer a death in his family at the time, but still, I wasn't contacted by him or his staff for two months after I and my advocate consulted with him in person. (I'd been referred to him by the Oregon Bar.) After those two months, he said that he'd called the other person's lawyer, and that he didn't think I needed any legal help or even mediation. He then gave me a solution that we'd already explained to him wouldn't be possible. With all due respect, Mr. Worthley didn't remember any of the key issues in my case, and then only offered me a solution that would not only not work for my case but had nothing to do with the core issues which we presented to him at our meeting in person. He refunded only part of my retainer and wrote me a letter saying I had "mischaracterized" him (whatever that means). I was surprised and disappointed, and I would definitely not recommend him.

Tye was a partner along with Eric Slepian when I had my case accepted by their firm. My experience with Tye was less than great. I found him to be very terse and when I was on the phone with him, he gave me the impression that his time was far too valuable for him to be talking with me. Actually did this thing where he made it clear he had just put the phone down until I stopped talking. because I had dared to repeat myself, because he failed to respond to what I had just said not 60 seconds prior. Just my impression, but he seems to lack any real empathy for his clients, and in all, just not a very nice man. I gave him two stars, only because of his years of experience, as I imagine he learned a thing or two from the Slepian family, and for what it was worth, he did make partner at that firm. Not sure how long he was with Eric Slepian, but he was there for two years while my case was in progress. I would recommend Eric Slepian, as I believe he is a second generation disability lawyer. Not sure, but I believe his father was also disability attorney. My case is still pending. Just the process for those of us who do not have slam dunk cases. Its unfortunate that social security obviously want to draw out the process as long as possible, and the pandemic has just made the wait time even longer! Tye may be a good lawyer, I would not know how good of one he is, but his demeanor sure leaves a good bit to be desired!

I am a Navy Veteran who served in uniform for over 30 years. Shorty after retiring in 2010 the VA found me to be 100 percent disabled. I filed for Social Security Disability and was denied. In 2013 I reapplied and was once again turned down. I applied for an appeal and was going to go through the process alone. Two weeks before my court date I saw a TV Commercial about Slepian Law Office. I knew that I was unprepared and lacking the knowledge to represent myself. I gave Slepian a call and they agreed to represent me. This was one of the smartest decisions of my life. My attorney Tye S. Smith and his staff prepared a winning case. He is a true professional. I was amazed at how quickly he understood my military background and how my service connected disabilities impacted my daily life. I could not of asked for better representation. Make the call! Commander, USN (Retired)

If you can avoid this lawyer, do it at all cost. The court recommended her as my sons GAL. 2 years later my son is still going to be fighting to spend time with his brothers and me. If she is recommended ask for someone else immediately. I thought it was ok at first. She seemed like she was listening. After a while I noticed all her meetings and phone calls were always made to my ex and his lawyer first. I wasn't represented because I couldn't afford it. She would ask me for information and turn around and say she did all this investigating but actually did no work. I made recommendations for my son and she turned around and claimed them for herself in court. She was completely unprofessional in court if she showed up at all. She will make you feel like she cares about the things you're saying but in reality if you don't have a lawyer she is biased and WILL SIDE with the party that does. Her billing is outrageous. She offered my ex a payment plan and took me to court for contempt once again because I have no lawyer. She told me in one of our very few meetings that our case with others was neglected because she was off having a baby and that's why we hadn't heard from her. My sons about to be 3 and the one thing she's supposed to be doing is looking out for his best interest. All she cares about is filling her pockets. I can't believe how fast she went from nice and caring to vindictive just because I didn't agree with everything she said. She twists words and only hears certain things and then will call you a liar. I have to continue to keep fighting for my child now. I wanted all this to be over for him but now it has to continue so he has a fair shot with his brothers. So sad that this lawyer couldn't stop thinking about herself.

I signed paperwork 8 years ago for mr. Miller to work on my SS claim. After months of not hearing a word either way and an appeal hearing in the near future I gave up. I hired another attorney who won my case. Mr miller has now won a fee petition for his time spent on my case, which by the way didn't include any correspondence. Two years after someone else won my case , after he withdrew, he was awarded money. You make your own conclusions.

I am re-reviewing based on faith that the rest of my current matter receives as much attention until it is resolved as it has since I placed my last review and got back in touch with Mr. Miller's team. The SS administration had opened a claim in 2012 that I hired Mr. Miller to help me with in 2009; in which I handled with the assistance of another person. Although I informed SSA that Mr. Miller was no longer my attorney, the SSA paid him 25% of the new claim anyway. SSA was next to impossible to talk to and figure anything out (if I could get a hold of someone), and some of the explanations I received were down rite lies. After almost a year of trying to get a hold of anyone to give me any actual answers (obviously after I reviewed Mr. Miller), I figured out what happened (I think.) I just found out from an SSA employee (if this persons info is assumed to be correct) that if Mr. Miller agrees that he didn't represent me in this matter than all fault of Mr. Miller getting 25% of this claim is the SSA's fault. Mr. Miller has sent me the letter I need to send to SSA stating that he wasn't my lawyer after 2009 (and faster than expected.) Before this confusing matter (all matters with SSI are confusing), I was and am now again impressed with Mr. Miller and his team. The team was so pleasant in helping me figure this out that I have felt nothing but regret in posting a hasty negative review. SSA can take years in matters and I suppose this time will be no different. I am posting my change of point of view on faith, that the $3,957.75 is eventually given to the appropriate person responsible for the new claim and all work from 2009-2014 in my behalf. On faith that nothing fishy goes on in which Mr. Millers team ends up not refunding the 25% of the awarded claim. However I feel confident and will rave in recommendations for Mr. Miller and his entire team based on their overall performance once this matter is justly resolved. P.S. when you review this post could you please remove the other one I placed titled "I didn't even know he was still my lawyer." In that post I posted all of the information I had at that time, but with the new information I received the first post is no longer valid or even has "all the facts."

I hired him to handle a claim for me in 2009 and after it was settled, a part of the settlement was paid to him and I was happy with that. I haven't seen or heard from him or his practice since and wasn't even aware he was still considered my lawyer because I complete all forms and appointments on my own. I just found out that SS paid Ronald Miller an additional $4,000 in 2013; not for the SSD that he helped me with but the SSI I continued to fill out paper work for on my own long after I hadn't heard anything from Mr. Miller. The benefits came to $7,703.75 and his attorney fees were $4,045.75; more than 50%! I wasn't kept "in the loop" or well informed after the initial first couple of months. I wish someone would help me figure out what is going on.

Every question concerning my case he would put her on speaker phone with him present and she answered all my questions while he remained silent. If I can rate it zero stars I would. This is absolutely a clown show of lawyers that just pass on the case from lawyer to lawyer! Nobody seems to have any information of anything. They pressured us to get the money within an hour to have the case worked on immediately. Which stressed my family and me out getting the money! As soon as we got it they comfort us saying they will start, but no lawyer ever contacted us and the day of the court they didn’t even BOTHER TO SHOW UP! Which resulted in the court to be pushed back till next month. Absolutely disappointed, I trusted this firm because I was recommended by one of their own employees! I urge anyone that is looking for a good lawyer and actually do their job DO NOT COME HERE! They will take your money and not give a care about your case !! They prey on financially unstable people to pressure them and take their money! Unfortunately I was a victim of this false advertisement they show case. I urge anyone that is trying to get their loved one out please don’t come here! There is a reason why they have less than two stars on ratings Si puedo calificarlo con cero estrellas, lo haría.

It’s decent but never returns your calls and in court she’ll get something done but has a attitude. I don’t know maybe she just doesn’t like me

Gerald Ratliff has been the most reliable and professional attorney I have come across in West Tx. His staff is awesome, and responds quickly. He settled my case, and was accurate, timely, and overall very reasonable compared to other attorneys in the same area of expertise. Thanks Mr. Ratliff. Hopefully you can help me again in the future! Very much recommend his services!

Gerald Ratliff is the most knowledgeable Attorney in San Angelo, Texas. Even though he specializes in family law, workers comp and other legal claims, he helped me with estate case. I won my case and highly recommend him. Mr Ratliff's charge is very reasonable, especially compared other local attorneys. His assistant is quite knowledgeable, and they will always respond quickly, no matter what the time, they have a 24 hr answering service. He also got 2 folks I know out of jail within a few hours. Thank you Mr Ratliff!

I could pretty much verbatim say what one of the other reviewers said. It is time for this guy to retire. He was incredibly incompetent in helping with my legal matter. As has been said...flippant...not prepared and didn't remotely fight for me. I could have defended better than he did. No research...incredibly POOR communication. If no stars was an option...I would pick that.

I found Gary online just a shot in the dark. I left a message and he called me back. We spoke for a while and he helped me get SSD benefits. He was very helpful. After my benefits kicked in his staff helped me with Medicare selection. They are all very personable.

I had this attorney represent me in my disability case but he handed it off to his fellow rookie attorney and she helped get my case dismissed along with other people that she represented for him. They false advertise saying they help people every step of the way on their television commercials which that wasn’t true. The lie detector test determined that was a lie. I got denied because they put a rookie on my case like other cases that they know will get denied. They could have appealed my denial to the appeals counsel, re-applied, or appealed it to the federal court which they didn’t do any of that. If they did then that would be helping every step of the way.

Mr. Bimberg is a senior partner at Levin Benjamin. I tried to express concerns of my case that was being handled by another attorney. All he could say was that the other attorney had years of service and that he could do no wrong. He would not address the fact that the other attorney was withholding information that may have changed the outcome of my case. I thought you were suppose to tell the truth the whole truth. Not here.

Same thing in my case. I broke my Ankle bone climbing company stairs. For TWO years I sent this lawyer every single document I received and even had some serious medical documents translated, at my expense. I was the one who constantly called his him, asked if he needed anything from me, each time I had to remind him WHO I was! The Statutory time frame for WC claim is Two years. I found out from my NEW lawyer, but by this time the statutory timeframe was up and I had no legal rights to presure my employer. I guess this lawyer actually worked for my employer. Don’t waste your time, energy or mental health on this poor excuse of a lawyer. BE WARNED!!!!!!

I sustained a serious work injury. I was looking for a good WC attorney and contacted Pond Lehocky. I was advised that they did not handle WC in my state, so they gave me Jeffrey Stern, who practices in my state. After signing up with him I thought he was a good attorney. His office was very unorganized and he was dressed in shorts when I had my first consultation with him, but he seemed to be very good per our conversation. As my case went on, I gave him updates of all of my treatment and the shenanigans my employer was trying to pull. The case was proceeding along, so there was nothing urgent to be done as I was treating. Well, after my treatment was coming to a close and the physician and my employer were trying to force me back to work, it was time for Mr. Stern to act. Not only did he stop communicating with me, he lied and told me he was doing things on my claim that I found out he was not doing. I got fed up and fired him. He lied to me and to the court. When I did get a new attorney, I found out that my employer's counsel had sent him paperwork that I needed to fill out 3 times for completion, which he ignored and never sent to me. My employer's counsel was about to file a petition to have my claim closed. Thank God I found a new attorney before that happened. Mr. Stern is lazy, and unorganized. I also found out that he goes to court unorganized. I would not suggest that anyone trust him with a serious claim.

I had an excellent experience working with Jeff regarding a car accident case. He was always available and quick to respond. This was a difficult process, and Jeff reduced a lot of my stress. He had my best interest in mind, taking into account my needs and advising me accordingly. Lastly, I feel like he understood how important it was for me to understand the legal process itself and the all options available to me. Jeff is down to earth; made this process easy. I would certainly recommend him.

What a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Can Do for You

A Social Security and Disability lawyer specializes in helping individuals navigate the complex process of applying for and securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. These lawyers assist clients in filing applications, gathering necessary medical evidence, appealing denied claims, and representing them in hearings before administrative law judges. A lawyer can help maximize the chances of approval by ensuring that the paperwork is accurate, deadlines are met, and legal standards are addressed.

If you are disabled and unable to work, or if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied, a Social Security and Disability lawyer can guide you through the legal process to obtain the benefits you’re entitled to.

When Should I Hire a Social Security & Disability Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer in the following situations:

  • Applying for SSDI or SSI benefits: The application process for disability benefits can be complex, with strict requirements and documentation. A lawyer can assist in completing the application correctly and submitting the required medical evidence to improve your chances of approval.
  • Denied disability claim: If your initial claim for SSDI or SSI benefits has been denied, a lawyer can help file an appeal and represent you in hearings. Many claims are denied initially, and having legal representation during the appeal process significantly increases the chances of success.
  • Requesting reconsideration: After an initial denial, you have the right to request reconsideration of your claim. A lawyer can help present new medical evidence or correct any errors in your original application.
  • Hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ): If your reconsideration request is denied, you may request a hearing before an ALJ. A lawyer can represent you during the hearing, preparing you to answer questions and presenting a strong case based on your medical and work history.
  • Proving medical conditions: If your disability involves complex medical conditions, a lawyer can help gather expert medical testimony or additional evidence to demonstrate that your condition meets the legal criteria for disability.
  • Overpayments and cessation of benefits: If the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims you were overpaid or attempts to terminate your benefits, a lawyer can assist in challenging the decision and protect your right to continue receiving benefits.
  • SSI for low-income individuals: If you are applying for SSI, which is based on financial need in addition to disability, a lawyer can help ensure that your financial records are correctly submitted to meet SSA’s strict income and asset limits.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid mistakes that could delay or jeopardize your claim.

What Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Do?

A Social Security and Disability lawyer provides a range of services to help individuals navigate the application and appeals process for SSDI or SSI benefits. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing initial applications: A lawyer can help prepare and file your SSDI or SSI application, ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately and medical evidence is included.
  • Gathering medical evidence: A lawyer works with your doctors and healthcare providers to collect medical records, treatment histories, and expert opinions to support your disability claim.
  • Filing appeals: If your initial application is denied, a lawyer can file an appeal and guide you through the reconsideration process, ensuring that any additional documentation or evidence is provided.
  • Representing you in hearings: A lawyer will represent you in front of an administrative law judge, helping you prepare for the hearing and arguing your case to demonstrate that your disability prevents you from working.
  • Handling deadlines and paperwork: A lawyer will ensure that all deadlines are met, and that any requests for additional information from the SSA are responded to promptly.
  • Negotiating settlements (for private disability insurance claims): If your disability benefits claim involves private disability insurance (in addition to or instead of SSDI/SSI), a lawyer can help negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company.
  • Fighting benefit terminations or overpayment claims: If the SSA attempts to terminate your benefits or claims you were overpaid, a lawyer can defend you in administrative proceedings or file for a waiver or reconsideration.

How Are Social Security & Disability Lawyers Paid?

Social Security and Disability lawyers are typically paid on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if your case is successful, either through the approval of your disability benefits or winning an appeal. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The fee is usually 25% of your past-due (backpay) benefits, but no more than $7,200. This fee structure is set by the SSA, and lawyers cannot charge more than this amount for SSDI or SSI cases.
  • No cost for future benefits: Lawyers are not entitled to any portion of your future monthly disability benefits. Their fee is strictly limited to a percentage of your backpay.
  • Additional costs: In some cases, you may need to pay for additional expenses, such as obtaining medical records or expert witness testimony. These costs are usually minimal, but it’s essential to ask your lawyer about any additional expenses upfront.

It’s essential to confirm fee arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid misunderstandings.

How Much Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer is typically structured around the contingency fee system outlined by the SSA. General cost information includes:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer’s fee is capped at 25% of your backpay, with a maximum of $7,200. For example, if you are awarded $10,000 in backpay, the lawyer will receive $2,500 (25%), and you will receive the remaining $7,500.

Overall, there is no financial risk in hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, as they only get paid if your case is successful.

Top Questions to Ask a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

Before hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with Social Security Disability cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling SSDI and SSI cases similar to yours, particularly if you have a complex medical condition.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Confirm that the lawyer charges a contingency fee and that you won’t owe any fees unless your claim is successful. Ask if there are any additional costs for medical records or other expenses.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Disability claims can take time, especially if you’re appealing a denial. Ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what the typical timeline is for cases like yours.
  5. How will you help me prepare for my hearing?
If your case is going to a hearing before an administrative law judge, ask the lawyer how they will help you prepare for testimony and present your medical evidence effectively.
  6. What happens if I’m denied again?
Ask about the next steps if your reconsideration or appeal is denied, including the possibility of further appeals to federal court.

How to Check the Credibility of a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable Social Security and Disability lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for Social Security experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in Social Security and Disability law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on Social Security Disability matters.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Membership in organizations like the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to representing disability claimants.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Medical records: Bring copies of your medical records, including doctor’s notes, test results, treatment histories, and any disability-related diagnoses.
  • List of medications and treatments: Provide a detailed list of any medications you are taking, treatments you have received, and ongoing medical care related to your disability.
  • Denial letters (if applicable): If your disability claim has been denied, bring a copy of the denial letter from the SSA, along with any documentation related to your appeal.
  • Work history: Provide information about your previous jobs and work history, including details about how your disability has impacted your ability to work.
  • Social Security application (if already filed): If you’ve already submitted an application, bring a copy of the application and any correspondence you’ve had with the SSA.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you have about the legal process, the lawyer’s fees, and what to expect in terms of timelines and outcomes.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your situation.
