When my husband's parents, both in their late eighties, required a move into an assisted living facility, we wondered exactly how we would pay for such a tremendous expense. Luckily, the director of the facility knew of a VA program set up to help war veterans with a monthly pension that is specifically designed for this. Equally important, the director knew of a local law firm that was especially knowledgeable in aiding vets and their families navigate the red tape and many forms needed in order to apply for this wonderful benefit. We met with Jeff Miller, the lawyer, and began the process of getting all our ducks in a row. We found Jeff to be a straight-talker, very personal and professional. He laid out a plan for us and helped us in gathering all the materials needed to prove my father-in-law did indeed qualify for the pension benefit, having served during the Korean War. This was no small task, as the required documents come from a very specific list and must be filled out extremely accurately. Little missteps on our part could have caused the application to be delayed for literally years, or denied outright. It was comforting to have the team at the Miller Law Firm guiding us and encouraging us whenever needed materials seemed difficult to locate or specific information hard to confirm. Their commitment to their clients in seeing the application process to completion is commendable. Currently only about 5% of the federal funds set aside for this program are actually being distributed to the veterans who need it. Many have never even heard of this pension. Others see all the hoops you have to jump through and simply give up, or have an application that was poorly filled out and now languishes on some desk somewhere at the VA. We have heard of people who have waited five years to get through the whole process and finally begin receiving the much needed pension benefit. We count ourselves lucky to have been pointed to the Miller Law Firm. Even the assisted living facility director was surprised when we told her that the application had been approved and the pension started. She expected the process to take much longer. If you, or a relative, have served during wartime and need financial assistance from the VA, do yourself a favor and get professional guidance through the arduous application process.
